I thought the Nashville song was dreary.
Also still not a fan of "When You Are Old," regardless of which one sings it (though I slightly preferred Gretchen's oddly enough).

I was really hoping to find room further up on my list for “Souvenirs” especially considering that I had placed it inside my top 15 in Suzy’s artist rankdown. This just goes to show you the strength of the songs in the top 20 here. “Ships” is by far one of the strongest album tracks to be featured in this rankdown and has long been one of my favorite songs from Patty’s When Fallen Angels Fly album. And I’m judging you bboat11 for lumping this into your bottom 5! |

I thought "Ships" was pretty unremarkable... It seemed to lack the memorable point of view and creative vision of a lot of Gretchen's songs. We'll see if I like it more when we get to that album rankdown eventually :)

Eh Gretchen's version of When You Are Old is on the boring side. Martina's has more power.
Wait I actually did not realize Suzy Bogguss wrote Black Ribbons. Haunting story and omnious intro and organ! Great song from an excellent album.
I really like the melody of How You Learn To Live Alone. Not so much towards the vocals though, so I think Gretchen should record her version.

Ugh "Hello Cruel World" and especially "Black Ribbons" deserved better, absolutely fantastic songs! My problem with Carrie Underwood's version of "Independence Day" is that I feel that she sings it with a lot of power but she sings it with barely any emotion, which is where Martina owns this song. For this reason is why I had it so low. Its funny because I did like her on American Idol but never could get into her cover of this performance, she had others that were a lot better that season. This! This! This! Carrie is a powerful singer and has done some amazing things in her discography, but she's never been someone who I felt can convey songs like "Independence Day" all that well. Gretchen Peter's songbook isn't for her imo. |

Never been a fan of the melodies of both songs. Maybe slightly better for that Shania song, but it feels like too percussion heavy to me. The chorus of Inside Out feels like a non-event. Perhaps Bryan Adams got too much writing part.

I often forget that “Dance with the One That Brought You” was co-written by Gretchen and its an often overlooked song from Shania’s discography. I remember seeing this quite a bit on CMT back when it was released and is of course one of the songs that introduced me to Shania.
While “Inside Out” isn’t a song I seek out when I’m wanting to put on some Trisha I always enjoy listening to it and find the easy breezy melody to be great.
Pleasantly surprised to see “I Saw Your Light” make it this far as its always been one of my favorite songs from that album. I’ve mentioned this before but I’ve always found Something Worth Leaving Behind to be a rather underrated album and I can’t wait to get to that one in her albums rankdown.
I wasn’t sure how well “Arguing With Ghosts” would perform and I’m glad to see it at least got one other top 10. This song was standout for me from Dancing with the Beast and it has been one of my go-to songs from her since. I find this song all to relatable lyrically and it’s one of two songs that brought tears to my eyes when she performed it.
I really expected “Chill of an Early Fall” to at least make the top 10 so thats somewhat disappointing. I always come back to this song when October rolls around and often play it for the rest of the fall months lol.
“Nobody’s Girl” is great and if I’m correct it was Michelle’s last Top 50 hit here in the States. I’ve always loved “Take It Like a Man” and wished that her success stateside had continued.

LAW's version of I Saw Your Light is a bit too pop leaning. I prefer Gretchen's version slightly more.
Arguing with Ghosts is a beautiful song about Alzhemier's. I like the analogy between the smoke and the narrator's life.

Yeah, this was Michelle's final US hit. Which is so unfortunate, because she is so talented. I wish that her international success had continued. I saw her live in August, and she was wonderful. |

“If Heaven” is such a gut-wrenching song that never fails to leave me with a lump in my throat. Andy Griggs had a handful of great songs in the late 90s/early 00s and this is right up there with them.
