God remember when I used to be the one yelled at for my controversial ranks? Good times, great memories Caged! Sorry, old habit Edition: 40. Stutter---The better of the two Elastica songs get revealed first. But despite my rankings, the difference is kinda slight. 39. The Heart's Filthy Lesson---Wanna like David Bowie, I really do. But outside of Space Odyssey and Fame, he doesn't do much for me. Maybe if he traded in his synths for real instruments? 38. Piggy---What does a band name mean? It means a song that could have ended up in the 70s if it was Jim Bob Nobody doing it ends up in the top 40 because it's by a BIG band. I found this song crappy, but don't worry, I was kinder to Hurt. 37. Strange Currencies---I kinda dug this REM number and I'm glad that it was the last one out. Wish it could have hung around for another day. 36. Ode to My Family---The do do doos worked their magic and it's not quite top tier Cranberries, but it's solid enough. Fine landing spot. 35. Love Spreads---Solid song, can't complain where it landed. 34. Gotta Get Away---Almost swore this was a Crazy Taxi song, but it wasn't. Straight ahead Offspring is good Offspring in my opinion. 33. Connection---I guess mine was suffering from the AOL dial-up blues? Like I said in 40, this was decent but slightly worse than Stutter. 32. Halah---Solid first listen and I'm fine with them finishing here. 31. Unglued---Eh, could have waited one more day, but this is fine. 30. She---Really enjoyed this Green Day song. I wish it had stuck around one more day though. 29. Carnival---The writing and performance were both good and although I wish this had stuck around another day, I can live with this spot. 28. Landslide---Not quite top tier Pumpkins, but this spot is Smashing enough. 27. More Human Than Human---I'm kinda pleasantly surprised by this spot...I thought it would have struggled to get to the top half. Maybe boost it a notch or two for Active, though? 26. A Girl Like You---Disappointed this didn't make top 10. I thought it would be generally liked by everyone. Still have 7 top 10s left and if my bottom 7 leaves, the songs left would all be in the top 40. Nice work, team!

Love Spreads The Stone Roses
Am I the only one who gets a kick out of the "intrusive R" in the chorus?
31
Unglued Stone Temple Pilots
This song is fun.
29
Carnival Natalie Merchant
P-P-P-P-PERFECT RANKING!
26
A Girl Like You Edwyn Collins
I remember hearing this song used as a music bed on The NFL On NBC late in the 1995 season, when one of the studio analysts interviewed a member of the Steelers. That was the season when the Steelers advanced to Super Bowl XXX against the Cowboys. Sadly, they lost. If they had a more reliable QB, then they could have pulled off the upset and ended the NFC's Super Bowl winning streak at 11. It ended at 13 two years later, when the Broncos beat the Packers in Super Bowl XXXII. Oh yeah, and the song itself is pretty awesome too!
EXTRA
Little Bastard Ass Ponys
Feel free to share your thoughts on this song below! I'm sorry, but when I read the name of the band, I just cracked up.
EXTRA
Whip-Smart Liz Phair
Feel free to share your thoughts on this song below! This is a weird-sounding song, but somehow I like it anyway.
EXTRA
The Day I Tried to Live Soundgarden
Feel free to share your thoughts on this song below! Another kick-ass Soundgarden song!
EXTRA
Morning Glory Oasis
Feel free to share your thoughts on this song below! A hallmark of Oasis is the "wall of sound" effect in many of their songs. This is one of them. I also enjoy singing along to this song at the top of my lungs. 38. Piggy - Nine Inch NailsI'm not a fan of this band, but I've never felt the desire to tank their songs, but damn this time they were just horrid. There is a reason these last two songs were the bottom of the tank on the actual YE chart as well. Now can we get rid of that other NIN travesty?I think I know what your #100 is. Unfortunately for you, I was much more generous to it, though it's not in my top 20.

My internet has decided to not work at night lately, so I missed the last couple of reveals. "Landslide" and "More Human Than Human" went further than I thought they would, given that I knew the former would have tankers and the latter...well, the latter is Rob Zombie. That gives me hope for Active, anyway. "She" going out was more surprising than either of those other two reveals. As for "Carnival"...the longer that song lasted, the more I knew my ranking would be controversial. (Thank god I wasn't lowest, though. Shielded. ) Here's the thing: I have never remotely cared for Natalie Merchant as a solo artist. I've never been hugely into 10,000 Maniacs, either, but moreso than Merchant by herself. The funny thing, though, is that I was not rooting against it. I was kind of amused because of how long it was lasting. I'm down to three songs below my top 35, though I have no real issue with any of them still being here. One bottom half remains...though good luck getting that out before the top ten. 38. Piggy - Nine Inch NailsI'm not a fan of this band, but I've never felt the desire to tank their songsSo, apparently, you forgot about "We're In This Together"? I'm just going to ignore the last part of that comment. I'm going to pretend I didn't see that. That's how forgettable that one was that I forgot I tanked it. Anyway since it's out in the open. Ask yourself this? Does "Hurt" strike anyone like the type of song I would like? Does it seem more like the type of song that tunes me out musically and lyrically? Those subject matters pretty much go against everything I like ,or can get into. I'm not saying there are not any Metal songs that cover those dark subjects. Ozzy "Suicide Solution" for example, but the music more than makes up for the lyrics. The music in "Hurt" hurts. I don't need to be in a dark place ever. Plus what's with all that extra static? I know its done on purpose, but really un appealing sounds altogether.

"Hurt" is a very, very dark song, and I understand exactly why some people might not like it, but I appreciate the dark and macabre just like I appreciate the rowdy and ebullient. As humans, we all experience a wide range of emotions, so I think it's great that there's music for all of it. With that said, as much as I like "Hurt," I admit that I cannot listen to it if I'm in a very happy or pleasant mood, which is why it's not in my top 20. I can listen to it if I'm in a neutral mood, but if I do, then I have to follow it with something a bit more upbeat, or I'd risk falling into a sad or pensive mood.

our last set before the top ten is pretty exciting, if I do say so myself!
#25 might not be one of the primary reasons why, though. nine top 20s, including 3 top tens. only one bottom ten, but a few cut it close. this was lower early on, even spending a few lists in the bottom half. however, it spent most of the time in the 20s.

the foo fighters' debut single ends up being a somewhat low performance for them, although it's still top 25 so I doubt they're complaining

#24 brings us another song without many top tens, at two of them. it also has more bottom tens than "this is a call", with multiple people losing one this time. a good 24 top 50s, though. this was doing well at first, but collapsed quickly, it spent a stretch just before the middle in the 40s and 50s. it slowly recovered, though, finishing at one of its highest points.

The right one is out first, but this is still solid and would have been higher in a worse year. Just wait until we get to 1994. Same thing is going to happen, but perhaps even worse.

there are a few high SDs hanging around the place.
#23 is one of them.
21 top half rankings. multiple bottom tens. was nearly kicked out of the top 40 at some points.

The fact that this song was outside of the top 40 at one point and almost back out of it later on is a travesty.

Shiver was my #1 for 2001, so of course I'd like the guy they blatantly ripped off with that song (according to Pitchfork at least).

#22 only has two top tens, and neither of them are high. 24 top 50s, and no bottom tens, although there are a few bottom 20s. this was top ten early on, but fell out early and never came close again, mostly spending its time in the 20s.

Really, "Heaven Beside You" was their best chance to make the top ten in Alt.
(Now watch as "No Excuses" somehow makes it in 1994.)

I'm taking away four top tens for #21, all of which are top fives. 23 top 50s, and this only got two rankings below the bottom 30. this was outside the top 40 for a bit at the start, but it finished at its highest point.
