"ME!" id a perfectly fine lead single. Not my favorite of hers, but I don't see how it's so much of a downgrade from "Shake It Off." For the most part, I think the general public and music critics have their swords out for her. I mean can you imagine the flack she would have gotten if she released something like the beloved "7 Rings?" There's not much people are allowing her to do right.

Taylor has always been tactic heavy. I forget which album that was where you could order it with a Papa John's pizza, but...yeah. TBH the only surprising thing about it is that she hasn't yet run out of shit to do, b/c she always goes so hard at it.
People had a lot to say about it then, so I don't know why anyone would be surprised that people have a lot to say about it now. It just seems like more people have something to say now because the tactics are no longer working,* making it more apparent how much work goes (and has always gone) into making a Taylor Swift. However, that only speaks to the lackluster quality of the song. I don't think that says much about Taylor as an overall brand finally being dead, though it would probably be to her benefit after this to stop going for these OTT launches.
*wherein "working" means "going straight to #1"

I don't understand the point in using up every promo tactic in the first week for ME! Even if the promo worked and it hit #1 this coming week, it's gonna drop like a rock because it's already showing signs of falling and they have no new promo tactic to stabilize it for longevity. I'm guessing peak position is more important to them than longevity?

#1 peak is important for them. This is probably the best and only opportunity to achieve that. A long chart life is not in the plans. They will probably release single #2 very soon.
