PLSSSSS 😭😭😭😭 especially in an argument when you're clearly not on the winning side, judging from the likes - is very much in good taste. guys, listen, I think we need to recognize that there was a simple misunderstanding and this wasn’t an issue of “sides”. Both dbhmr and Austin have every right to identify as bigots and we should respect that, they matter #blm 😔✊🏻

One day they'll cuss someone out for saying "you look healthy" cuz based on the type of radical body positivity they're into it's very triggering and represents a form of oppression 🤦♂️

Can you imagine being friends with her? It’ll be like walking on eggshells. *them But yeah, I agree with the sentiment. I respect their resilience and strength as a person, but if their social media presence is any indication, I'm not sure I'd want to be friends with them. Edit: To be fair, once you read the article in full, you can see where Demi is coming from - headlines used for shock factor, as usual. It's not my place to comment on this, but I do think some added nuance to the benefits and support of complimenting one's weight loss should be considered.

Oh great...just when I was planning to clown on Candace Owens for the exact same comment. 🤦♀️
I don't get how it is poor grammar when they/them has been commonly used to refer to someone you don't know the gender. Also, the English language, like any other, has evolved and adapted over time, and with increasing awareness on gender identity, the use of they/them as singular pronouns is just a natural development, and absolutely not something to create such a fuss about.

Then/they is used in any instance when you’re referring to someone whose gender you don’t know. “Hey, that person dropped their phone. We should get it for them. How can we get their attention?” Pretty straight forward. Anyone refusing to use it on the basis of improper English is simply wrong.

I think Demi needs to pick one struggle and stick with it. It can't be that the world is 24/7 against you on all fronts; as it is they just come across as overly defensive and unlikable. The frozen yogurt thing is still the most impactful event of the last year+ of their career for a reason... and not a positive one.
As for the pronouns thing... it's not something Demi just came up with, so they're not trying to make you fall for their bull or anything. It's been used for a few years now to help non-binary people identify themselves. Is it a little weird to read sometimes? Yeah. But it's hurtful to non-binary people to misgender them.

Uh, as has been stated, Demi didn't create the usage of them/they pronouns and non-binary people are very much a thing. This statement gives off very much "I refuse to call a trans woman she because she wasn't born female" energy and no one has time for that in 2021. Intentionally being disrespectful of someone's identity or pronouns is never the look and ESPECIALLY not the look from a fellow LGBTQ+ person.

Can you imagine being friends with her? It’ll be like walking on eggshells. I get where you're coming from. That said, I have friends who've expressed similar sentiments to what Demi is saying here. Body trauma and dysmorphia can be really intense and hugely impactful on people's lives. They affect people's relationships with food, fitness, clothing, romantic partners, and beyond. My friends who've gone through it think about it constantly, even after they've made a lot of progress treating their bodies in a healthier way. The most innocuous intended compliment about a person's weight can trigger all kinds of negative thoughts and feelings from their past.

I'm not into Demi the person and we can side eye Demi and call Demi out on all their other BS but out of respect for their own self identity and for all of the others who haven't done anything to you can we please respect others self identity and use the right pronouns at the very least. To disregard that is to basically disregard their existence as a human being regardless of how you feel about them .
I'm not one for policing language but a line has to be drawn at blatant misgendering people regardless who they are.

I was never going to mention Demi's weight loss anyways so they can rest easy tonight. The problem Demi has that I feel many do nowadays is they weaponize their own personal issues and expect the whole world to carry the burden on their shoulders for them. I'm not into the self victimization followed by anger and lashing out and I feel we all have our own issues and we cant just dump it on others and should instead try to work on it.
I mean there is plenty of times and women that Demi has lashed out at who have their own issues that they didn't consider their triggers. Demi sounds totally self absorbed and entitled and frankly a cry baby and needs to get a grip.

I’m not referring to anyone them/they" after someone comes out as non-binary is disrespecting the trans community because you've actively stated you're not going to use the pronouns they prefer. As someone with several friends who've come out as non-binary, it doesn't take that much effort to mentally change the pronouns you associate with a person. And before you go on a tirade, they/them pronouns are already used in public discourse outside of gender. Doctors, news reporters, and lawyers already use they/them as singular pronouns for professional reasons, even when they've been identified, so even saying it's "not proper English" is a load of bulls**t.

I’ve never said that about the trans community. Don’t put words in my mouth. Oh, you're one of those. I didn't say you said that. I said what you did say gave off the same vibes and energy as someone who would say that. But, be proud of the ego and ignorance. To each their own. I'm not into Demi the person and we can side eye Demi and call Demi out on all their other BS but out of respect for their own self identity and for all of the others who haven't done anything to you can we please respect others self identity and use the right pronouns at the very least. I'm not one for policing language but a line has to be drawn at blatant misgendering people regardless who they are. Yes. Very much this. If your respect of a trans or non-binary person's identity and usage of their preferred pronouns fluctuate with your opinion of them as a person, you never had true respect for either community to begin with. You can't *try* to delegitimize one without trying to delegitimize all. It's a pretty nasty thing to do and speaks to character.

I think we've all explained it and I want this to be more of a learning experience more than a brow beating. I think we all make mistakes and linking is a poster who is usually always well intentioned in the past so let's give grace and move on now that we've said our peace. Demi thread has completely unraveled.

I think we all make mistakes and linking is a poster who is usually always well intentioned in the past so let's give grace and move on now that we've said our peace. Demi thread has completely unraveled. I think clearly a lot more tolerance is extended when one knows the individual and their character in question (I don't know this poster like that so I can't comment), but with all due respect, you can't come out making deliberately ignorant (certainly didn't seem accidental) statements (saying you're not respecting any non-binary person's pronouns) when you know full well the struggle, attempting to delegitimize an entire subset of people, only to stand firm in your position of ignorance when confronted in a hubris, further dismissive way and be handled with kid gloves. I think brow beating is a strong word still. I have seen many on this forum truly tear into and gang up on other members and for posts far less egregious. Still I understand the heart of what you are saying. Personally, I've said all I have to on the matter. Hopefully this person learns and grows as we all should and do.

It’s funny how many millennials and gen Z folks hate Demi when they’re basically a prime example of those age groups. Wildly entitled, pushing personal issues onto others, trauma dumping, assholery, lack of personal accountability, etc. It all tracks.
Anyway, Demi is a mess and has been a noted asshole for 10+ years. With that said, I don’t think the non-binary announcement was necessarily attention seeking. It tracks with the way they approach everything in life. It’s a little weird how much ire a simple Instagram post sparked. Drag Demi for valid things. There’s more than enough. No need to drag them for shit that doesn’t even make sense.
In terms of the weight comments, again, Demi didn’t say anything countless others haven’t said before. Honestly, it’s probably most polite to not comment on people’s weights or bodies unsolicitedly. Unless you know that person’s goals (e.g. dropping 15 lbs), why explicitly comment on weight vs giving a blanket compliment (e.g. “You look hot”)? I’m not even sure if this is an example of them projecting their issues onto everyone for them to deal with. It seems like another voice in a gradual shift that’s been happening in this discourse. Like honestly, who likes someone giving unsolicited commentary on their body/appearance? What’s wild about that?

Can you imagine being friends with her? It’ll be like walking on eggshells. They must be so exhausting, draining to be around. Every day is some new shit with them. Everything seems to bother them, like if you sat next to them and were chewing gum minding your own business, THAT would trigger them.
