I fail to see what's wrong with it? I don't recall any first-day airplay deal being reported for this, which means if radio did this on its own they went in. At the risk of stirring the pot (which I promise isn't my intention this time lol), how does this first day compare with Bon Appetite? I will admit it's a bit underwhelming for a brand new Taylor track that it didn't break 1,000 spins. It's not necessarily a sign of anything, particularly if it isn't being actively promoted - unless it is (being promoted), in which case, it might be (a sign of something)? Are we really trying to draw a potential parallel between the Witness era and the Lover era? Lover and this could crash and burn by Taylor's standards and it would still never reach the depths of that commercial disaster. lol How anyone could look at today's pop update and see anything other than a slam dunk is beyond me. I have never even seen a similar update (sans deal). People salavate at +400 spin updates and this is a nearly four-digit one day result. How many songs can you list (without radio deals) that have opened as big with their first day? That is an incredibly short list. This most certainly is a sign of something and it is positive and to Taylor's favor.

I'm pretty sure Max was just comparing the two since Bon Apetit was the last big second single from a major A-list female pop musician to release before the album and not have a radio deal on its first day. That's quite a laundry list of qualifiers, so it's not shocking that BA is the one to pop in his mind first. For what it's worth, I believe God is a woman also didn't have a first day deal. But that's the only other one I can think of after BA.

I thought 'Blank Space' was pretty much out with the album, but off the top of my head I don't remember the timeline either.

I think this song has a great message.
Is it a bit opportunistic? Possibly. But why would she release a song like this any other time except for Pride Month especially since sheβs been so outspoken recently politically, especially regarding advocating against anti-LGBT politicians.
For someone who is usually apolitical, and Money-hungry I think this is pretty bold of her. Her roots are still country and eventually a mass-appeal to the general public with 1989. Taking a stand like this does alienate some of her audience.
I also think the song in general has a different message compared to other LGBT anthems. This song speaks directly to the hater. Like seriously, homophobes, especially the religious ones really do need to calm down.
Cool song!

My favorite part of the song is how it uses tropes used against women being hysterical and being too loud, and reappropriates them against the patriarchy that tries to keep people down.

I'm trying to picture her saying "this sick beat" in conversation too. I'm guessing this is a new baseline for what phrases artists can and can't say in song lyrics. LOL. I will never be over βthis sick beatβ or βmy ex man.β

First day playlists were only about 2/3 of what they were for ME! and there was less hype/promo and no MV (yet) to promote the song, so I would say it's Spotify debut is good enough that there's the potential for it to overtake ME! on streaming in the long run.

Ok this is such a grower. Her best single since OTTW excluding Delicate.

This started growing on me as well but I still prefer "ME!". Still, there's not even one 'reputation' song I find weaker than these.

It grew on me a little. On the other side, this has been bleeding all day on Itunes and it looks like it won't even last a second day on top. I'd thought that with the better reception, this would last longer?

Is it the same unjustified outrage for her "pandering" while she steadily puts action behind her words in support of the very community they are apart of? I am guessing yes. Good thing the average listener isn't as easily triggered. lol

Also, itβs not necessarily one or the other. She can be an ally who has put her money where her mouth is while also creating a clumsily written song that seemingly cashes in on the growing rainbow capitalism. Iβm not sure if thatβs necessarily my personal take, but itβs not inconceivable.

I could not care less if someone doesn't vibe with the song. My issue is over certain members of the lgbt community being overly critical and cynical of people simply trying to support our plight (and in this instance someone who has the platform to really do some good). This is an issue I have across the board and not an argument specific to Taylor or this song, the discussion just happens to propelled by it. I find it annoying, because it tends to do more harm than good. I don't care if people don't like the song itself. lol

Allies can be criticized. If they need it, itβs fair grounds. Turning a blind eye to potential shortcomings because theyβve supported the community in other ways does them a disservice.

I appreciate artists being allies and I am glad to see Taylor being outspoken about LGBTQ rights but the past few years I feel like everyone (especially corporations) see the LGBTQ community as cash cows and slap a rainbow on everything during Pride month just to capitalize on the community.

Of course, I agree. Allies absolutely can and should be criticized, certainly if warranted. I just don't feel as if she has done anything even remotely close to warrant being "roasted to hell and back" by the community with this release.

A lot of people do, and weβre having a little fun making jokes about her tonedeafness. Your flippant misuse of βtriggeredβ is quite revealing, btw. Having a different opinion (and a sense of humor about that opinion) isnβt the same thing as being triggered.

Lover and this could crash and burn by Taylor's standards and it would still never reach the depths of that commercial disaster. lol How quickly we forget. People were saying the same thing about Katy back in the day - until it happened. Do I think Taylor is in trouble? Not really. And even if Reputation was a drop in success for her, it was still a pretty big hit. But so was Prism. Comparatively speaking, Lover could be Taylor's Witness and it's entirely possible that it does crash and burn. I don't think it will because Taylor has a much more solid foundation than Katy ever did.

I do think Katy's more casual/GP oriented fanbase + the long break between her last big hit from Prism (Dark Horse) and her return cause a lot of people to move on to other pop artists who were more active during 2014-2016.
Also, Chained To The Rhythm is a decent song to me, but it's kind of like Taylor releasing a song about how love isn't what it's cut out to be and you shouldn't bother thinking about pursuing it in the way it undermines Katy's music and what her fans were there for. And then anyone who she might've won over with the idea of a political album were probably lost when she released Bon Appetit and Swish Swish.
Having a political image during a really polarizing time probably didn't help for Katy, but there's definitely other causes that lead to her under-performances in 2016-2019. I think Never Really Over is doing pretty well considering Katy peaked 7-9 years ago though. It's not as big as her Teenage Dream singles obviously but it's still one of the biggest pure pop songs released in the last couple months.
Regarding YNTCD, I like how cheeky she comes off, the melody and the way the vocals and production fit together, even if there's certain aspects of the message behind the song that aren't entirely clear/cohesive. Maybe the MV will help clear some things up.
