Their album sales have totally collapsed in the UK Just my 2 cents but I think that Happier didn't do any good for their more indie orientated fanbase. yes i guess ur right.

Because fans of rock music hate any ounce of change or evolution. It’s why rock is dead. Like with country, "evolution" doesn't have to mean "make pop music". this, plus Bastille isnt rock -- theyre alternative. id say that sentiment is more true for actual rock fans (look at the active rock charts -- Three Days Grace broke the record for most #1s a little while ago despite every single sounding more phoned in and generic then the last), but alt fans tend to be chiller about that sort of thing in my experience.

Because fans of rock music hate any ounce of change or evolution. It’s why rock is dead. Like with country, "evolution" doesn't have to mean "make pop music". But they also dislike current Rock music. Rock fans by far are the genre that just listens to music from 20+ years ago on repeat. www.billboard.com/charts/rock-albumsAll those Queen, Metallica, Guns n Roses, Beatles, Pink Floyd, etc albums just hog up their charts every week nonstop. There is a total of 10 albums in the Rock top 50 composed primarily of music released the last year. Of those 10, 8 were new debuts -- meaning they'll probably fall off the chart in a week or two. The main reason Rock will remain dead is because the demographic's audience doesn't want to listen to any current Rock releases.

A friendly reminder that the Mainstream Rock airplay chart went defunct like 3 years ago because Mainstream Rock stations just weren't playing many currents.

You ever consider that might be because rock no longer has hits on the Hot 100? A lot of the biggest rock albums on the charts do have hits, so odds are, it's not just rock fans streaming/buying these albums. A lot of them tend to be Greatest Hits for a reason. Having all those hits allow for more sales and streaming. It's not like newer rock artists are getting big hits for the most part, nor are older ones.

These two things aren't mutually exclusive. In fact, they're heavily related. If you don't have hits, you can't sell an album. But listeners are the ones determining the hits. If they don't even want to give the time of day to new releases, there won't be hits from them. It's not like everyone just got together and decided, "no rock hits right now" because that's not how it works. There has to be a demand and currently, there just isn't much because rock listeners are too dead set on listening to past hits.

There has to be a demand and currently, there just isn't much because rock listeners are too dead set on listening to past hits. Rock is more an album-oriented genre. Which makes sense, as the genre skews older. You don't need hits to sell an album, and rock acts can sell a lot more albums than they do singles. Marilyn Manson's last album sold 32,000 copies in the first week. None of his singles are going to sell that much. Metallica sold 282,000, and they're not going to sell that many singles. Greta Van Fleet sold 300,000 pure copies of their last album, and I doubt any of their singles sold that much. It's likely rock fans don't care about singles much at all. Rock can usually get into the Bubbling Under (Shinedown, Metallica, and Slipknot have all done it recently) due to decent sales of the single the first week (but rock singles never sell as much as albums). And rock also doesn't get streamed as much. Since sales are generally frontloaded, sales will evaporate after the first week for newer singles/albums, as their fans will have bought it in its debut week. Rock music isn't exactly pop radio friendly. It's very unlikely you hear a guitar solo on Top 40 radio now.

YT reported weekly views for OTR fell 16.5% to 30.7 million. You Need to Calm Down had 17.2 million. That breaks a streak of six consecutive weeks where the former at least tripled the views of the #2 song. The last week, coincidentally before the streak started was the week that Me! debuted.
