I knew that Faith had covered "Why" as well but I had never really listened to her version much prior to this. I'm probably still a bit partial to Rascal Flatt's version, but I do enjoy them both. Most of you already know that I lost my father at a young age (I had just turned 7 and he was turning 40) but I'm not sure I've really shared how he passed...unfortunately it was by suicide so this song is just really hard to listen to no matter who sings it. Both my dad and mom suffered from depression/anxiety and unfortunately they passed that gene down to me...I often refer to it as my "dark passenger" that I know will be there with me for the rest of my life so I've had to learn how to manage and cope with it. There still seems to be a lot of stigma surrounding mental illness and with us always having to put on a happy face for the world...so for anyone out there who has struggled with this just know you're not alone and never feel ashamed talking about how you feel.
"It's Your Love" is definitely one of those songs that has been overplayed and I admit that there was a span of time where I couldn't even listen to it because I've literally grown up with it on country radio since it was released. This song was literally EVERYWHERE upon its release and there was no way of escaping it either because it held onto the number one spot for something like six weeks in late spring 1997 (fun fact about this is that George Strait was number one for five weeks before this run with "One Night At a Time" and then number one for four weeks with "Carrying Your Love With Me" right after IYL left the #1 spot...Bryan White was the only artist to be able to squeeze in a lone week at #1 between those three big hits of the spring/summer).
I never knew how beloved "Sleeping With the Telephone" was until Reba's Duets album rankdown and yet the amount of support it continues to receive in these rankdowns is always a bit surprising. Going into this, though, I thought it would likely be a top two contender but I certainly didn't think it would come within striking distance of actually winning. I certainly appreciate this song more now that I did previously, but I still don't love it the way some of you seem to lol. We'll of course be seeing this song yet again in the Reba album tracks rankdown so I'm sure it'll be making another strong run there as well.
I'm thrilled to see "There You'll Be" win even if it was by a nose. I've always loved this song so much so that I almost chose it as the one to feature for Faith in the 2000's Girls of Country rankdown last year (I ended up going with "Mississippi Girl"). This wasn't the big hit that I thought it was going to be on the country charts as it peaked just outside of the top ten, but I still think it's a favorite amongst her fanbase.
Thanks again, bboat11 , for hosting the album series for Faith and it was a lot of fun revisiting her earlier material along with her more recent contemporary releases!
