I thought this was going to Regret its way to the win.
This top 10 is both the most boring 90s top 10 we've produced and sort of bewildering at the same time

25. Hit (18): A great mix of rock, dance, and rap, with great vocals by Bjork. Their biggest 'hit' back home, and a song that made me buy their Hits album. But I guess most people prefer noise over rap, or simple over complex melody 24. Ballerina Out Of Control (3): This was not a love at first listen, but after a year of hearing it, it all clicked and became one of my favorite songs of the 1990s, and a song that usually takes me somewhere else. It's been in the soundtrack to all my moves over the past 15 years (from Lima to Syracuse to Beijing to Syracuse to DC) and of my main road trips in the past 20 years. The guitar, synths, drums, and the combination of notes are perfect to me. I had the pleasure of seeing them live last year, and I managed to chat and get a picture with David Schelzel. Unforgettable. 23. NWO (94): Freaking finally!!!!! I really tried to give this first-listen a chance. I liked the beginning but then all went south. The same monotonous 'melody' time and again, with insufferable 'vocals' made me not want to listen to it again. I didn't rank it last because at least that drum and guitar combo were interesting enough to give extra points over the plain boring, uninspired or melodically awful stuff that I found below this song I mean, I'm not totally against hard rock. Stuff like Enter Sandman or You Could Be Mine are leaps and bounds better than this trash :) 22. Disappointed (7): Well, at least this made it higher than NWO! This was another personal chart-topper in 1992. I loved the elegant, sophistipop sound of this song, with good influence from Pet Shop Boys and New Order (not as much from Smiths) made it a favorite of mine that year and decade. I still use this often. 21. Bad Luck (32): This was a pretty good discovery, as it had a more classic rock vibe. 20. 100% (96): Another song where melody is an afterthought. There is barely some verses and incomplete, half-baked pre-chorus and that's it. I'm fine with some distorted guitars when they support a main melodic line, but in this case distortion WAS the main melody line. This type of shit makes me wanna throw up, so NO thanks. At least I helped this abomination not make the top 15. 19. Helpless (81): I'll admit I under-ranked this a little bit. I thought I was gonna rank it higher after I listened to it for the first time, but the melody was a bit too simple to win over more interesting or elaborated songs. Maybe more familiarity would've helped me rank it in the 60s. 18. Twisterella (89): I actually liked the melody at the beginning of the song, and I had good expectations about it. But then the chorus was a disappointment as it was not as strong as the verses. Vocals were kinda high-school amateur band, so that didn't help either. Overall it felt more like a demo with good potential that could've been a great song. It reminded me of Latin rock songs with good potential that didn't have enough resources to be better produced 17. Drive (71): REM have a handful of personal chart-toppers -but this wasn't one of them. It made my personal top 10 that year following my love of their Out Of Time singles. It has some good elements, but ends up being too monotonous and lifeless (ala What's Good). I actually like First We Take Manhattan better. 16. Friday I'm In Love (1): Not surprised, but actually glad that it made it this far. This was a love at first listen. This was the other song (besides Stay) to stay atop my personal chart for a month, thus becoming one of my top 2 songs of the year. This was their 8th and last top 3 in my personal chart, and it's become my all-time favorite TC song. I love Robert's lead and backing vocals, the happy melody that runs throughout the song, including the post-chorus and bridge, the music... It puts me in a GREAT mood every time I listen to it, and it brings back pretty good memories of my last year at school. 15. Blood Makes Noise (34): Her biggest hit in my personal chart was her 2-week chart-topper Luka, and then she had a few minor hits like Tom's Dinner and In Liverpool. This one made a brief dent in my personal chart, as it felt too out of place that year, but then I grew to love its unique musicality. I still like to play it loud in my car :) 14. A Small Victory (53): Music was pretty good and the melodic parts were well complemented by the guttural sounds. Had the song had another melodic part, it would've made my top 30. The songs in my top half were just too strong for me. 13. Cold Feelings (69): I wish the vocals were much better here. The melody and music are spot on, but his voice is too all over the place, flat, shaky, and far too amateur sounding. If his vocals had sounded more like they did in Bad Luck, this would've made my top 30. But the awful vocals made me under-rank it. 12. Somebody To Shove (46): Back home, this became a hit later in the decade, after their big successes with Runaway Train and Misery. I didn't like it as much as either song, but still managed to make my personal top 5. I like it enough to admit I could've ranked it a bit higher. 11. High (28): Of course their songs would appear in reverse order to my preferences! Anyway. It's a strong, melodic song. One of their top 3s in my personal chart. With most of my top 10 songs gone, I'm now only hoping that my lowest remaining song leave pretty soon. Another piece of noise that has significantly overstayed IMO. I wonder if Dr. Indie is in a similar situation, as we clearly shared the same thought about that other piece of noise --NWO.

Extras: - Real Cool World: I like dance music and rock-dance combos, but this one felt either half cooked or generic. Not a good Bowie representation. - Walkin' On Broken Glass: Another big hit from Annie in my personal chart, spending a month in my top 2. It's my favorite song by her. I love the use of strings here and then the more 80s type of synthpop and of course her dynamic vocals. Easy yearend top 10 for me. - Pleasure: This was a minor hit back home. Much poppier than DT, and I didn't like it as much as that one or I'm Free, but I definitely didn't hate it.

25. Hit - The SugarcubesI swear I would like this song a whole lot more if that freaky Bjork didn't do the vocals. This would have been a top 40 hit on my list if Siouxsie had sang this. maybe even Tori Amos in her uptempo 80's vocals. BTW, the rappping in this song made me tank it 5 slots lower. 24. Ballerina Out of Control - The Ocean BlueEverything, but everything I have previewed from this band has been nothing short of amazing. "Magical, Beautiful and Excellent" best describes that listening experiment. Neither of my radio stations from back then( 91x nor KROQ) played this band. Instead I got "Jump Around"? and you wonder why I was into glam in the 90's 23. N.W.O. - MinistryFinally. The only N.W.O I care for was that Last attempt stunt of Hulk Hogan's career when he turned into a heal. Forget that this isn't even melodic, but I have no idea what this even was? Was there a song in there? It sounded like a musical accident more than anything else. It had fast guitars but the rest was incomprehensible. I still can't believe this is the same band who gave us classics like "I Wanted To Tell Her", and (Every Day) Is Halloween. I even thought they were English at one point. Here another bomba from back in the golden age of music. 22. Disappointed - ElectronicI normally put 80's icons higher than this. I remember a Hi-NRG version of this song, but this version was just fine. kinda housey but still very melodic with the guitars and what not. 21. Bad Luck - Social Distortionnaturally this would be in my top 15. This is the best one and the one my radio stations played most often. 20. 100% - Sonic YouthHere is another a band I find little use for. This wasn't as bad to tank but still not very memorable at all. 19. Helpless - SugarThis was good. It just hadn't etched itself into my musical memories. First time listen. 18. Twisterella - RideAnother first time listen. Boy you guys radio stations played different songs from mine. No KROQ and no 91x action at all. Anyway, this was melodic enough but not strong enough for my top 50. 17. Drive - R.E.M. This sin't one of my favorite R.E.M songs at all. I like the ones we ranked that year before so much more. 16. Friday I'm in Love - The Cure A #100 for this? You are an angry person aren't you? You fools F U C K ed it up hard. This was the chance to upgrade the Cure. This is the bonafide 90's hit for them.... and furthermore you are all screwed cuz I doubt I'll have much use for this song on Active 1992. 15. Blood Makes Noise - Suzanne VegaI have no idea how a song like this makes it to top 15. The only thing I slightly enjoyed was the bassline. 14. A Small Victory - Faith No MoreThe only victory this song accomplished was a sure slot in my bottom tank. Cheeeeeesey as hell. 13. Cold Feelings - Social DistortionNot bad , but also a first time listen. Neither of my radio stations played this one. They played "Bad Luck" and to top it off KROQ played "When She Begins". I'm telling you. We lived in different worlds. 12. Somebody to Shove - Soul AsylumF U C K yeah! Soul Asylum, but you still suck for killing off one of my strong top 10's 11. High - The CureI would have preferred a bunch of other songs out before this one. Congragualtions you did almost everything to kill off the British music invasion of 1992.

EXTRAS:Dream About You - Peter CaseLoved the Beatle-esque sounds of the early 90's. This guy basically has a slight Lennon vibe. Great song. #1 Dominator - TopWell I didn't hate it. That's for sure. Sunshine and Ecstasy - Tom Tom ClubFirst time listen. This has really great female vocals. Like The Flirts, and Bananarama but the male rapping tanks it hard. This would have been a pretty decent song with just females and more synths. Thumbs up for female vocals that I really flipped over for. Almost Gold - The Jesus and Mary ChainThis was passable. Something you guys might upgrade while I put in my 70's. Real Cool World - David BowieFirst time listen. This had more NRG than most of Bowie's 90's stuff. Walking on Broken Glass - Annie LennoxOh yeah! Big hit on my charts with a peak of #9. this would have been in my top 10. Maybe taken Lush's place. maybe?. Head On - PixiesThis band is hot or miss for me. I prefer their more melodic stuff. maybe a few form 1989. Smiling - Kitchens of DistinctionThis one is pretty good. Nice melody line. I'm sure they are British? Happy Birthday to Me - CrackerI like one song from them "Low", 'nuff said. Pleasure - The Soup Dragons This is way up my Powerpop alley. More Andy Taylor vibes. Guitar charged, Female backups and cowbell. #57 on KROQ and #72 on 91x. At least two radio stations got it right. Uh Huh Oh Yeh - Paul WellerI didn't really get the feel of this one. The melodic vibe sounds forced. I Don't Want to See the Sights - The Charlatans Poor man's U2, but its still not half bad. Donna Everywhere - Too Much JoyNever heard this before, but I can get into this groove just fine. Sounds like a song I would rank in my high 40's while the rest of you click off after the first "cowbell"?

I wonder if Dr. Indie is in a similar situation, as we clearly shared the same thought about that other piece of noise --NWO. I'm almost 100% sure its the same song, but its a PULSE hard -on band, so the odds were against us from the get go.. Meanwhile... Your top 10: Faith No More - Midlife Crisis L7 - Pretend We're Dead Nine Inch Nails - Happiness in Slavery Nirvana - Come as You Are Pearl Jam - Jeremy Red Hot Chili Peppers - Under the Bridge Screaming Trees - Nearly Lost You Temple of the Dog - Hunger Strike The Catherine Wheel - Black Metallic The Cure - A Letter to Elise 1. Are you surprised by anything about this top 10?L7 is pretty surprising, but it works for me. 2. More than any other song I've ever heard, this one makes me want to jump in a mosh pit and go CRAZY! It's the pace and energy of the song that gets me hyped up! Even the screaming vocals are perfect for this song! This song kicks fucking ass! It's great for speeding too, as I found out when I heard it on the radio driving down I-35 toward Kansas City in the middle of the night a few years ago. Don't tell my cousin, though, because he's a Missouri State Trooper. EXTRA
Walking on Broken Glass Annie Lennox
Share your thoughts about this song below! I like "Why" better, but this song is excellent too, and it was also a pop hit, peaking at #14 on the Billboard Hot 100 on November 14, 1992. Remaining Rankings and Averagescraziaskowboi : 1, 7, 8, 13, 17, 18, 20, 22, 27, 87 (22) Even though I lost a bunch of my top 10 in the middle of this rankdown, I noticed that my 10s and 20s were still holding up pretty well, and I love all those songs too! This has to be the best I've ever done on an Alternative or Active Rock rankdown in terms of average ranking left in the top 10. However, it does make my #87 stick out much more than normal.
