You Rock My World wasn't released as a physical single in the U.S.? Hmm, that's surprising. Anyway I'm not sure it would've been #1, because it wasn't even a very big airplay hit (#9 on Hot 100 Airplay, 10 on the Hot 100) and his popularity was greatly waning at that time, at least in the U.S. I'm curious as to what Beatles songs you think? It would be even more difficult to determine back then and we can really only speculate in hindsight, and if there's any records available as to which ones got significant enough airplay. You could make an argument for several songs but I would go with my favorite Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds The parody was #1 So was the cover song Gary, I know you mean Elton John's version of "Lucy..." when you say the cover song, but what do you mean by the parody? Are you referring to "Judy in Disguise (With Glasses)" by John Fred & His Playboy Band which reached #1 in 1968?

How do you know this? Did Billboard publish any airplay charts back then, or were there any other figures or rankings released by other outlets? How do you know it didn’t? It is one the many songs that get played so often you would think it was a single. The ‘needs no proof’ example was Lucy in the Sky. Variations of the song hit number one twice. There are many others. Got to Get You Into My Life May be another. 10 years after it was recorded it went top 10. Imagine what would have happened if it was released when it was new GTGYIMYL is a great example. Barely 2 years after The Beatles hit Top 10, EW&F's cover version also hit the Top 10. Another near-certain non-commercial single #1: Backstreet Boys "I Want it That Way." I'm pretty sure it was #1 on Hot 100 Airplay for multiple weeks.

Sounds like you're just surrounded by people who will jump through any hoop necessary to he outraged about something because I've not seen a single thing about Lizzo backlash, especially with that ludicrous of a reason. Lol why am I being shat on for relating my personal understanding of someone else’s opinion in response to a perceived trend that someone else brought up? Jesus. You're not? My post wasn't about you, it was about your source. Hey, SHOOTER, what's the tea on this Lizzo backlash from the black community? Real/not real/3 people on Twitter?

Britney's You Drive Me (Crazy) no. 6 airplay, and Oops no. 8 airplay, could've been easy no.1s. Also, was Nsync's Bye Bye Bye released as a commercial single? huge no. 1 airplay hit, but stalled at no. 4 Hot 100

Imagine what would have happened if it was released when it was new Let me first say that I didn't mean to come across as angry or argumentative in my comment, which it seems like you thought I might have, I was just curious if there was any supporting evidence to back up his/her assertion. No, I don't know for a fact that Michelle didn't receive a lot of airplay, but of course that doesn't prove that it did. The inability to confirm a negative does not imply a positive. Maybe the "needs no proof" example would apply in more recent times, like with Don't Speak or Iris, but I don't think it does in this case because it was so long ago and I'd assume the majority of us weren't even alive to witness it or old enough to remember. I was asking specifically how he knew their original recording of Michelle (and I guess this applies to their other songs as well) got played a lot specifically at the time it came out in the mid-60s, which is what he said. Whether it or other songs get a lot of play or became hit singles either with the original artist or as covers anytime later on (which is what you said) is irrelevant because although there are certain songs that spark special interest right away, many others take time to marinate to become classics and appreciated and we cannot definitively say for sure how they would have fared when they first came out.

A historic week for Billboard is on the way. For the first time, a song will have spent 17 weeks at #1 on the Hot 100. Congrats Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus.

To their credit, I like the song better than One Sweet Day and Despacito. As long as he doesn’t try to push for more than 17 weeks I’ll be happy.

Getting out of the house is how I hear about things like this though lmao.. Sounds like you're just surrounded by people who will jump through any hoop necessary to he outraged about something because I've not seen a single thing about Lizzo backlash, especially with that ludicrous of a reason. Everyone in my circles is loving Lizzo and most of them are the type to cancel almost anyone. Some of them wanted to cancel Madonna after her World Pride performance because according to them, she wore the "wrong shoes". I'm like 😱. Being #1 for the longest time doesn't mean it's the biggest single of all-time. Yep it takes time, but somehow I have a feeling, people will never get tired of this song, it's genius. Obviously there are different measurements for the biggest, so the longest number one definitely is one of these. It's still way too soon to know how this will impact the culture in the long term since this phenomenon is happening right now.

what are some songs that would’ve gone #1 had a commercial single had been released? all i can remember right now is michael jackson’s “you rock my world” and maybe iris? I really doubt that for MJ. You Rock My World was a fluke single for him, and actually peaked in its 3rd week which is pretty bad. It was radio-only, and already done at radio after 3 weeks despite a humongous first-week deal. The parent album was also his lowest selling at the time. It would've had to have a heavy discount. Airplay-only songs I think would've went #1 with sales releases: Backstreet Boys - "I Want it That Way" (this peaked #1 on radio, they were huge album sales forces, and this ofcourse is such an iconic song) Smash Mouth - "All Star" (this peaked #1 on airplay. A huge classic, not to mention nobody takes them seriously as artists, so they would've been big single sellers had a single been avaialble) Christina Aguilera - "Beautiful" (this was #2, and pretty close to #1. 15k sales or so would've made it #1, which she could've easily done.) Will Smith - "Men In Black" (this was #2 on Airplay, and a Soundtrack single, which Soundtrack hits were naturally a bigger draw for single sales because someone is less willing to buy a full album when the artist with the hit only has a few songs on it at maximum) The Fugees - "Killing Me Softly" (huge classic, #2 on Airplay, and R&B/Hip-Hop singles were the biggest draws in the singles market)

If OTR gets the 17th week, next goal is 26 weeks which BEP got with two songs 10 years ago.
So bring on Panini video/discounts/Dolly Parton remix for country radio/VMA performance etc

If country radio didn't latch onto "Old Town Road," which already had country elements, with Billy Ray Cyrus, they're not even going to attempt "Panini," with zero country elements, with Dolly Parton. Hell, Dolly hasn't even had a country airplay hit since, like, 1995.

It was a joke obv, I have zero faith in Panini becoming a #1 hit.

Maybe it should have been a single. Instead, Capitol released "Nowhere Man" as a single in early 1966 (which wasn't even on the US version of "Rubber Soul" but was on the original UK version), and it went on to reach #3 on the Hot 100 that year.

But it'd be nice if she got a #1 from the Stripped era after the underperformance of Dirrty.

So y'all expect Lil Nas X to carry on with this momentum? I mean I know Panini and Rodeo charted decently already but he's (probably) never gonna come close to OTR-levels again.
He seems to be aware of that btw, as he has said multiple times that he's gonna milk this song while he can.

We're in the end game folks Speaking of Endgame, given that Avengers: Endgame just surpassed Avatar for the highest-grossing movie of all time and "Old Town Road" might surpass "One Sweet Day" and "Despacito" next week, seems like quite a good month for breaking records.

GoldenB- that would be the not-adjusted-for-inflation list, of course. :)
It indeed does look like OTR will reach a 17th week.

Billboard low key/almost confirmed a 17th week for OTR in the article...
“With no songs appearing likely to blast to the top, as Swift's "Look" or Dion's "Because" did, or to debut at No. 1, and with "Bad Guy" possibly regressing significantly in the second tracking week for its Bieber remix (moreso than "Road," given the greater gains for the former on this week's charts), the stage could be set for "Road" to rewrite history with a 17th week at No. 1 on next week's Hot 100, dated Aug. 3 and whose top 10 is scheduled to be revealed next Monday, July 29”

Looks like the Week 17 video is flopping... taking a wild guess here but maybe it's because it's literally a cut down version of the original video that was made to function as an audio video?
