I think the fact he is gay and black absolutely should be a point of focus and conversation here. It is a monumental achievement and historic moment for the LGBTQ community. Well the record was previously set and held by black people of which one is a gay icon, so it fits.

Mariah is obviously a gay icon at this point, but back then, in the pre-Butterfly days, I don't remember thinking of her as a gay icon. I'm not sure when the transition occurred. I guess when she released an album called Rainbow, with a rainbow spray painted on her ass, that pretty much sealed the deal. I was so deep in the closet in 1999 when that album came out that I had to buy the Rage Against the Machine album in the same transaction to cancel it out.

I was so deep in the closet in 1999 when that album came out that I had to buy the Rage Against the Machine album in the same transaction to cancel it out. You’re right. I would say Mariah Carey began transitioning into a Gay icon during the ‘Butterfly’ & ‘Rainbow’ eras; the ‘Glitter’ era also propelled that. Her image slowly transformed into that of a sensuous, hyper-glamorous, sex-kitten which, of course, did wonders for her popularity; her music was still ‘urban-oriented’ enough to keep straight men interested (especially when she began collaborating with rappers ala. Jay-Z; Da Brat; Ludacris etc.) but she was still extremely ‘campy’ in personality to keep Gay men infatuated also. I remember frequenting several Gay forums around that time and Carey was extremely popular, especially with the Gay youth. I remember a lot of them stating that songs ala. ‘Butterfly’, ‘Can’t Take That Away’ helped them in their “coming-out” process around that time (and of course ‘Hero’ had been adopted as a Gay anthem of sorts too). It was beautiful. I was a young teen myself and she definitely inspired me. Also, the 90’s were a time when Gay men were obsessed with other vocal divas ala. Whitney Houston and Celine Dion. Neither adopted the image that Carey did, but they were still adored by the Gay community. I went to Celine Dion’s “Let’s Talk About Love” tour in the summer of 1999, it was during the same time when President Bill Clinton declares June to be “Pride month” and the audience was literally comprised of just women and Gay men. Dion even more a a rainbow flag as a cape during segments of her show. Whitney Houston had Gay fans everywhere also, starting from as far back as the 1980’s and so did Janet Jackson, especially Black Gay fans.

kierz7 Mariah was a vocal diva even before the Butterfly album, so she would already have that following. Her popularity peak was definitely 1995-96 during the 90s decade as well.

Hot Shower is pulling pretty comparable stats to Wish Wish/Higher (though slightly worse). Anyone else see it debuting top 25?

Hot Shower is pulling pretty comparable stats to Wish Wish/Higher (though slightly worse). Anyone else see it debuting top 25? I don't see it debuting top 30. It's on demand is great, but its sales are weak and it's doing nothing on YouTube. Wish Wish and Higher both had music vids and sold a lot first week.

With Chance now crediting the features on Spotify, there’s a chance that Death Cab for Cutie could notch their first Hot 100 hit since 2008 if Do You Remember holds up

OTR got a massive sales boost from week 17, I wonder how it's streaming is doing?

OTR got a massive sales boost from week 17, I wonder how it's streaming is doing? The official video is gaining 30-40% compared to last Tuesday. I don't know what happened on Spotify, Apple Music and Amazon, but it's like the original version was removed. It was #78 on Spotify last week, but since Friday it disappeared from the Spotify Charts.

Looks like the news coverage of OTR17 has given it a boost on streaming, sales and significantly slowed the erosion at radio (-0.08) compared to the 1MM-2MM daily losses during past two weeks.
So will OTR actually increase its 1.2 lead over #2 in its 18th week???

denverd- it very well may. The streaming performance alone probably makes up for the airplay differences, and then throw in sales, where the four versions are currently ranked 1, 11, 50 and 67 on iTunes.

Dan + Shay could get a new peak on Hot 100? Probably not, even with the new peak in Radio Songs. Earlier in its chart run it probably had better digital sales and streaming.

Can Ariana debut at #1? OTR has about 500 points for this week. With how many points did tu,n and 7 rings debut?
Edit: Just did the homework: 7 rings - around 580 points TUN - 443 without a full week, around 400 after one full tracking week BUWYGIM - around 420
I'd say debuting at #1 is achievable if the song is good.
