Depends on what you consider the '2nd' song. I mean, Shameless vs. Liar came out with Liar winning despite Shameless having the video first, and OMG vs. Havana also had OMG with traction first before Havana smashed.

If we count dual single EPs, then the last time this has happened was with Drake's "Omerta" and "Money in the Grave". However, if we're talking solely about top 40 hit singles released within a short period of each other, like a month or two, 2018 had a number of them. For example, "Ball for Me" was outperformed by "Better Now" following their releases as radio singles after 'B&B' dropped. The Weeknd has also had this happen to himself before though, with "Can't Feel My Face" originally, for a while, out performing "The Hills" until 'BBTM' was released. Rihanna also accomplished the feat with "Only Girl (In the World)" and "What's My Name?"

"Needed Me" was the bigger Pop hit in spite of "Kiss It Better" being the only one sent to the format.

as perplexing as the Weeknd's promotional strategy has been this era, this could still be saved with a video/high profile performance in a month or so. granted, that'll probably mean Heartless will pull a Not Afraid, but this has way more potential in the long run anyways.

So many are raving about it and I like it but perhaps it's to 80's Uk new wave sounding for me.
During the parts of the song I can't even tell it's The Weekend. It's like he has an accent or or something.

First one that comes to mind is Pop Style and One Dance, Pop Style had a big feature and debuted higher than One Dance initially but One Dance ended up being the big single.

Also Needed Me and Kiss It Better, Kiss It Better was suppose to be the big pop single from Anti but Needed Me had better streaming so the label ended up focusing on that one instead. Despite being less radio friendly Needed Me still did better on Pop than Kiss It Better (NM reached #16 while KIB reached #24).
