This isn't a thread based on an opinion question, per se, but I don't know where else to put this thread. We could also share our opinions about the information here. Basically I gathered data from Spotify and YouTube as it relates to Whitney, Madonna, Mariah, Celine and Janet. I will post various stats in the first few posts of this thread. Some of it was difficult because in some cases the song totals have been separated (I had to add together some of Madonna's songs on Spotify, for instance), and in some cases the videos have been removed or are hard to find (see Celine with YouTube). I will start with a general overview:
Spotify Mariah - 1 song at 500 million (very soon), 3 songs over 100 million*, 12 songs over 50 million Whitney - 1 song over 300 million, 2 songs over 200 million, 4 songs over 100 million#, 8 songs over 50 million Madonna - 4 songs over 100 million+, 8 songs over 50 million Celine - 2 songs over 100 million, 6 songs over 50 million Janet - 1 song over 50 million *Mariah's next song to pass 100 million would be "Hero," which is at 86.65 million streams. #Whitney's next song to pass 100 million will likely be "Higher Love," which is over 77 million streams and doing well. +Madonna's nest song to pass 100 million will probably be "Vogue," which has about 85 million streams when you combine the versions.
YouTube Mariah - 1 video over 500 million, 2 videos over 300 million, 5 videos over 200 million, 14 videos over 100 million Whitney - 1 video over 800 million, 2 videos over 300 million, 3 videos over 200 million, 7 videos over 100 million Madonna - 2 videos over 300 million views (with two of "La Isla Bonita" combined*), 6 videos over 100 million views (with two of "4 Minutes" combined and two of "Papa Don't Preach" combined) Celine - 6 videos over 100 million views Janet - 0 over 100 million views (though "Scream" is very close) *For some reason Madonna has two identical versions of the "La Isla Bonita" video uploaded, and combined they just over 300 million views. "4 Minutes" also has 2 uploaded, and combined they're over 100 million.

The top 10 diva songs of these 5 women when combining streams from Spotify and YouTube:
1. "I Will Always Love You" - 1,075,000,000 billion streams (833 million YT, 242 million Spotify) 2. "All I Want for Christmas is You" - 1,041,000,000 billion streams (544 million YT, 497 million Spotify) 3. "We Belong Together" - 569 million streams (382 million YT, 187 million Spotify) 4. "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" - 515 million streams (55 million YT, 360 million Spotify) 5. "I Have Nothing" - 476 million streams (350 million YT, 126 million Spotify) 6. "La Isla Bonita" - 378 million streams (300 million YT, 78 million Spotify) 7. "Bi*ch I'm Madonna" - 357 million streams (302 million YT, 55 million Spotify) 8. "My Heart Will Go On" - 323 million streams (130 million YT, 193 million Spotify) - only a live video is available 9. "Without You" - 317 million streams (244 million YT, 73 million Spotify) 10. "Hero" - 312 million streams (225 million YT, 87 million Spotify) (11. "Always Be My Baby" - 284 million streams (152 million YT, 132 million Spotify))
"Bitch I'm Madonna" is misleading as it has a lot of YouTube views, but much lower Spotify streams. I included "ABMB" at #11 because it's more of a realistic top 10 inclusion.

Janet's digital catalogue has been handled so poorly (particularly the videos) so I wonder what her YouTube numbers could've been, but regardless she'd clearly still be in last place of the artists mentioned.

I've heard this before. What has been handled poorly? I ask out of ignorance. I know some hits are missing from YT, but "Rhythm Nation," "That's the Way Love Goes," "Miss You Much," etc have been available for 8 or more years and still have low totals.

Some of the videos are geographically restricted or some are not available to watch at all. Some of Madonna’s videos were not available for a long time on YouTube so that would also explain some of the lower numbers.

Why is Madonna so low here? I feel like most people would objectively agree Madonna has the most classics yet the numbers don't show that.

Especially when you consider how pop and dance pop she is and how mainstream audiences favor that as opposed to the rnb/pop/soul and hip hop of the other ladies.

I don't think Madonna or her team have done a particularly good job at introducing her music to the younger streaming audiences or appealing to them. Mariah has pretty much done the exact opposite.. she has people who weren't even born during her "We Belong Together" comeback doing viral videos of her songs. She tweets something witty and there are Buzzfeed pieces devoted to a single tweet. This is keeping her "cool" to younger audiences.. Madonna's social media presence is.. something else.

Madonna's social media presence is.. something else. Buzzfeed and Jezebel did articles on how shameful, disrespectful, offensive, and tone deaf her social media postings are. Though I do admit I did report those nude images as objectionable content on FB because that sort of thing isn’t allowed on that platform.

Why is Madonna so low here? I feel like most people would objectively agree Madonna has the most classics yet the numbers don't show that. Cuz Warner did a terrible job of transitioning her catalog onto the platform in an organized way. I honesty think they probably thought YouTube wasn’t big enough a deal to bother with it. Boy were they wrong. It’s a shame, cuz the reality is not represented by her stats. I bet Hung Up, if made available properly on her official YouTube channel in 2006, would be a billion viewed video.

Isn’t this last part true of a lot of artists/videos, though? Mariah’s “We Belong Together” was released as a single the same year as “Hung Up.” The video that’s on YT for it right now was posted in 2009. So was the “Hung Up” video.

One thing you can do to easily track the youtube stats is to add up the total views from their regular channel + their vevo channel. I did some updates, so I will post a couple different stats. FYI I combined versions where there were multiples of the same video (like with "La Isla Bonita") and/or where there was a remix or live performance getting a decent numbers of streams.
I will start with the top 20 'diva' songs when combining YouTube views and Spotify streams: 1. AIWFCIY - 1,343,200,000 billion streams 2. I Will Always Love You - 1,175,100,000 billion streams 3. We Belong Together - 616,200,000 million streams 4. I Wanna Dance With Somebody - 582,700,000 million streams 5. I Have Nothing - 539,350,000 million streams 6. La Isla Bonita - 445,000,000 million streams 7. Without You - 384,050,000 million streams 8. Bitch I'm Madonna - 368,750,000 million streams 9. My Heart Will Go On - 355,200,000 million streams 10. Higher Love - 351,500,000 million streams 11. Hero - 346,400,000 million streams 12. Always Be My Baby - 315,700,000 million streams 13. Hung Up - 310,000,000 million streams 14. When You Believe - 304,350,000 million streams 15. The Power of Love - 277,200,000 million streams 16. One Sweet Day - 263,300,000 million streams 17. Like a Prayer - 255,740,000 million streams 18. Touch By Body - 252,600,000 million streams 19. Vogue - 251,800,000 million streams 20. 4 Minutes - 250,200,000 million streams
Mariah has 8 on here, Madonna has 6 (though 3 are in the bottom 4), Whitney has 5, and Celine has 2. I know it's redundant to at the "billion" and "million," but I think it helps the mind process the numbers.

These are how each of the main 4 divas have done on YT and Spotify separately.
YouTube Mariah has 2 videos over 400 million views, 3 videos over 300 million views, 5 videos over 200 million views, 14 videos over 100 million views ("One Sweet Day" is nearing the 200 million threshold) Whitney has 1 video over 400 million views, 2 videos over 300 million views, 3 videos over 200 million views, 7 videos over 100 million views ("Higher Love" will reach 100 million fairly soon) Madonna has 0 videos over 400 million views, 2 videos over 300 million views, 3 videos over 200 million views, 7 videos over 100 million views (Madonna has no other videos anywhere near a new level) Celine has 0 videos over 400 million views, 0 videos over 300 million views, 0 videos over 200 million views, 7 videos over 100 million views
Spotify Mariah has 1 song over 300 million streams, 2 songs over 200 million streams, 6 songs over 100 million streams (Mariah should get 1 more over 100 million streams this year with "Obsessed") Whitney has 1 song over 300 million streams, 3 songs over 200 million streams, 5 songs over 100 million streams (Whitney has no more songs anywhere near 100 million streams) Madonna has 0 songs over 300 million streams, 0 songs over 200 million streams, 4 songs over 100 million streams ("Vogue" will pass 100 million streams fairly soon) Celine has 0 songs over 300 million streams, 1 song over 200 million streams, 2 songs over 100 million streams (Celine should get 2 more songs over 100 million streams fairly soon but nothing else is remotely close)

Funny how HUGE Katy Perry has been on Youtube considering she can barely get a Hot 100 hit these days.

Katy is def the biggest female artist on Youtube ever, her numbers probably even compare well to the biggest males like Ed, JB or Bruno

There seems to be a lot more YouTube streams for Latin divas than there are for Americans one. I imagine if you added a look at even the less obvious Latin divas to this list that many of them would be able to compete when it came to YouTube views.

Yes (Madonna's "La Isla Bonita" being big on YT isn't a coincidence), and anyone can feel free to do so. My goal was simply to compare divas that we often talk about and group together. It wasn't meant to represent all divas, and certainly now ones from the 10s.

Mariah Carey's "Without You" recently passed 100 million streams on Spotify. It is her 8th song to hit that mark, and no other song of hers or the other divas will pass that mark soon so I updated some stats.
Here is a ranking of all of the divas songs that have hit 100 million streams on both Spotify and YouTube:
1. "All I Want for Christmas is You" - 1,363,600,000 combined streams 2. "I Will Always Love You" - 1,273,600,000 combined streams 3. "I Wanna Dance With Somebody..." - 679,400,000 combined streams 4. "We Belong Together" - 669,300,000 combined streams 5. "I Have Nothing" - 603,300,000 combined streams 6. "Higher Love" - 537,500,000 combined streams 7. "La Isla Bonita" - 541,800,000 combined streams 8. "Without You" - 415,200,000 combined streams 9. "My Heart Will Go On" - 398,100,000 combined streams 10. "Hero" - 381,300,000 combined streams 11. "Hung Up" - 374,300,000 combined streams 12. "Always Be My Baby" - 361,500,000 combined streams 13. "The Power of Love" - 308,900,000 combined streams 14. "Like A Prayer" - 288,800,000 combined streams 15. "4 Minutes" - 282,500,000 combined streams 16. "Vogue" - 281,100,000 combined streams 17. "Obsessed" - 264,300,000 combined streams 18. "I Know What You Want" - 260,300,000 combined streams 19. "It's All Coming Back to Me Now" - 243,400,000 combined streams

^ Thanks.
I read that Spotify just launched in 10+ countries including Russia and some in Eastern Europe. I wonder if that will translate into faster increases in streams, in the long run. Not really relevant to the thread lol but since you said none of them has songs close to 100m, I thought maybe that will change sooner than we think.

For sure the addition of more countries should increase streaming in general. The next of these divas' songs to pass 100 million Spotify streams is very likely to be Mariah's version of "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)." It's at just over 90 million streams and will pass 100 million this holiday season. So, unless something else becomes a meme or something and takes off before then, that will be the next one. After that Mariah's "One Sweet Day" and Whitney's "My Love is Your Love" each have around 85 million Spotify streams, so they would be next but not for awhile.

I don't know how many of you are interested in these stats, but I have a lot of updates now that we are in 2021. (The very latest updates are Whitney's "How Will I Know" passing 100 million views on YouTube and Mariah's "One Sweet Day" passing 100 million streams on Spotify.)
Songs with over 100 million YouTube views: Mariah - 14 (15 if you combine views for the main "Fantasy" video and the ODB remix video) Whitney - 9 Madonna - 7 Celine - 7 Janet - 1 (and it's "Scream," so sadly not even a solo song)
Songs with over 100 million Spotify streams: Mariah - 10 Madonna - 8 Whitney - 6 Celine - 4 Janet - 0
Songs in the 100/100 Club (100 million streams on both YouTube and Spotify): Mariah - 9 Whitney - 5 Madonna - 5 Celine - 3 Janet - 0
I hope some of Janet's songs find their way to TikTok or something, because her catalog is too strong to do this poorly in streaming.

I think if Janet was not blackballed...she could've easily pulled in major numbers. Her catalog is super strong. But ya know...

Mariah's Angels Cry duet with Neyo having 140s million views on youtube is so random. It's probably the most viewed diva's flop. How come?

Mariah's Angels Cry duet with Neyo having 140s million views on youtube is so random. It's probably the most viewed diva's flop. How come? It does seem random, and I've seen a lot of speculation about it. Some have said it was big in some Asian territories, though I haven't seen the proof. Others have said it's because at one point it was the video on her artist page so it automatically played when you went there, but the video still gets about 50,000 views a day so I don't think that's it either. Why is Janet such a non presence on streaming? It's a combination of a few things, but as someone else pointed out, her getting blackballed after the Super Bowl incident is likely part of it. Her music isn't often used in TV, film, etc so that keeps newer audiences from getting exposed to it. Plus Janet is kind of a recluse, so she isn't out promoting her back catalog. Regardless it's sad that someone with such a great catalog (Hall of Fame catalog!) is nearly forgotten :(
