How is this black beatles rip off still #1 lol Happy to see YNTCD still pretty high, especially given ME!'s previous collapse haha. Is it mostly radio hanging on or more streaming/sales strength there? As noted in the charts above, it is highest in Digital Song Sales, then Streaming Songs, finally Radio Songs. Radio has been dropping the song quickly.

From Debby Boone to Lil Nas X, How Artists Fare After Arriving With 10-Week-Plus Hot 100 No. 1s 9/24/2019 by Gary Trust
Lil Nas X joins only Flo Rida and Ashanti in adding a second top 10 after reigning for double-digit weeks with an introductory No. 1 in a lead role. As previously reported, Lil Nas X lands his second Billboard Hot 100 top 10, as "Panini" vaults from No. 14 to No. 5 on the chart dated Sept. 28.
The song soars following the Sept. 13 arrival of its remix with DaBaby.
"Panini" returns Lil Nas X to the Hot 100's top tier after his breakthrough smash, "Old Town Road," featuring Billy Ray Cyrus, dominated for a record 19 weeks at No. 1 in April through August.
Looking at the Hot 100 historically, how rare is it for an artist to blast in with a debut hit that leads for double-digit weeks and add a second top 10, either with a direct follow-up or at all?
Lil Nas X became the sixth artist to score a 10-week-or-more Hot 100 No. 1 in a first appearance on the chart. Now, he's the third to revisit the top 10 with another song.
Thus, even the most notable rookie reigns offer no guarantees of further chart success.
Perhaps the achievement of following a debut smash with a second hit isn't quite as eye-catching as rewriting the mark for the longest-leading No. 1 in the Hot 100's six-decade archives, but, more key long-term, it points to the career sustainability for which Lil Nas X is striving. "As an artist building myself up, I'm going to have to continue to make other moments," he recently told Billboard.
Here's a recap of how the five acts before Lil Nas X that began with a Hot 100 No. 1 that reigned for 10 or more weeks fared in subsequent ventures.
Debby Boone, "You Light Up My Life," 10 weeks at No. 1, beginning Oct. 15, 1977
After bounding in with her debut 1977 smash, Boone tallied two more Hot 100 entries, both the following year: the No. 50 hit "California" and the No. 74-peaking "God Knows"/"Baby, I'm Yours."
On the Hot Country Songs chart, where "Light" reached No. 4, Boone forged a more regular presence, adding seven more top 40 hits, including the 1980 No. 1 "Are You on the Road to Lovin' Me Again."
Los Del Rio, "Macarena (Bayside Boys Mix)," 14 weeks at No. 1, beginning Aug. 3, 1996
Like Boone, the twosome's pop-culture juggernaut remains the act's only Hot 100 top 10 ahead of two more charted titles. For Los Del Rio, each follow-up marked another version of "Macarena": the original (No. 23, 1996) and "Macarena Christmas" (No. 57, 1997).
Still, "Macarena (Bayside Boys Mix)" remains the longest-leading Hot 100 No. 1 by a duo. The Chainsmokers' "Closer," featuring Halsey, has most seriously challenged the mark, logging 12 weeks on top in 2016.
Ashanti, "Foolish," 10 weeks at No. 1, beginning April 20, 2002
Ashanti became the first artist in a lead role to notch a debut Hot 100 No. 1 that ruled for double-digit weeks and return to the top 10. After "Foolish," she added seven more top 10s through 2005.
Helping her cause, Ashanti first built buzz as featured on Ja Rule's "Always on Time," which led for two weeks in February-March 2002, and via her featured role on Fat Joe's "What's Luv?," which peaked at No. 2 for seven weeks, including five under "Foolish."
As Ashanti's next Hot 100 entry after "Foolish," "Happy," hit No. 8, she and Lil Nas X are the only artists whose second charted titles reached the top 10 following 10-week-plus No. 1s as lead acts.
Flo Rida, "Low," feat. T-Pain, 10 weeks at No. 1, beginning Jan. 5, 2008
Like Ashanti, Flo Rida's debut No. 1 served as a springboard to further top 10s, as he has tallied 10 top 10s since "Low." He's the only act on this list to score subsequent No. 1s, ruling again with "Right Round" (six weeks, 2009) and "Whistle" (two, 2012).
And, like Lil Nas X, Flo Rida employed a sample for his second top 10, adding a level of built-in familiarity: "Right Round" updates Dead or Alive's "You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)," while "Panini" interpolates Nirvana's "In Bloom."
Flo Rida most recently inhabited the top 10 with the No. 4-peaking "My House" in 2016.
Mark Ronson, "Uptown Funk!," feat. Bruno Mars, 14 weeks at No. 1, beginning Jan.17, 2015
"Uptown Funk!" remains Ronson's sole top 40 Hot 100 hit to date as an artist; he's since added three entries, reaching a No. 43 best with "Nothing Breaks Like a Heart," featuring Miley Cyrus.
Ronson is a bit of an outlier in this club, however, as he first broke through to the top 10 as a producer. He solely produced Amy Winehouse's "Rehab," which rose to No. 9 in 2007, and co-produced Mars' "Locked Out of Heaven," which ruled for six weeks in 2012-13.
After "Uptown Funk!," which Ronson co-produced and co-wrote, he again infused the top 10 in both roles, thanks to Lady Gaga's "Million Reasons" (No. 4, 2017).
Ultimately, "What gives you longevity is your passion, your love, something that makes you smile," Flo Rida told Billboard last year. "That's what music does to me. It's getting that chance to bring out the inner me. To see it go from a thought to something that the world can enjoy is priceless."

Put it simply, Lil Nas X is the 6th artist in a lead role to have their first #1 go double digits
and of those, the third to return to the top 10
(Flo Rida and Ashanti)
Mark Ronson, Debby Boone and Los Del Rio never came back

I'd say Mark Ronson has a nice chance to go back. First of all he has gone back as a producers or writer, including a #1 hit with Shallow this year, and he relies on featured acts. The right feature will get him another top 10 hit eventually.
Flo Rida's run was really impressive. Even if his best tracks didn't actually hit #1 (Good Feeling and Wild Ones).

It seems like Flo Rida just gave up on radio and just puts out single tracks anytime he wants now. Which is weird, given I don't think he has enough of a fanbase to do that.
Spotify streams on his new songs since his last pop single (which I believe was "Cake"):
Hola: 64.3 million Dancer: 29.2 million Sweet Sensation: 16.1 million In My Mind Part 3: 6.4 million Tu Si Ballas: 1.73 million Snack: 1.05 million
I guess he just stopped caring. Guess he doesn't need to, he's made more than enough money.

One question, how does the artist 100 work? Lil Nas X has 2 songs in the top 10 and his EP has returned to the top 10, but he is not in the top 10.

I really hope they don't use the weighing for the Year-End charts because it makes no sense. Taylor Swift is also behind Lumineers. She has 3 albums on Billboard 200 this week adding up to 95k~ units, they have one that did 86k. She has 2 songs on Hot 100, they have 0. She is #26 on the Social 50 chart which measures social media impressions and counts towards Artist 100, they are not charting.

The Artist 100 is one of BBs only charts that I completely do not take seriously. It's completely inaccurate and meaningless

The Artist 100 measures artist activity across key metrics of music consumption, blending album and track sales, radio airplay, streaming and social media fan interaction to provide a weekly multi-dimensional ranking of artist popularity.

That sounds like it was written by someone at Billboard trying to gain credibility for a rather dubious chart.

It was written by someone at Billboard. For those who think it is inaccurate it might be that we don't have the formula pegged yet?

They said in the excerpt you quoted that the purpose of the chart is to measure the most popular artists of the week, no? If so, they failed miserably, regardless of the formula they use

Every chart that gets posted gets complaints so this one should be no different. All I can say is if you don't like the chart or don't rely on it, then you shouldn't. There are lots of other charts. Well...two others I guess if we are just going by the current free stuff.
Either way, I have no opinion on this chart...it is what it is and we don't really know the formula they use.

I've had my own week of complaining about the Artist 100 and how it makes less and less sense whenever/however you choose to look at it. I'm surprised it took people this long to notice how weird the chart works, regardless of whatever forumla they're using to blend all the metrics that makes up the chart.

I mean, at least it’s more accurate than the social chart, which is not really saying much.

Just as a note, apparently, the top artists of 2018 on the Artist 100 were: 1. Drake 2. Post Malone 3. Ed Sheeran 4. Taylor Swift 5. Cardi B 6. XXXTENTACION 7. Imagine Dragons 8. BTS 9. Bruno Mars 10. Camila Cabello

"Ranking is based on an artist's chart performance on the Billboard Hot 100, Billboard 200 and Social 50, as well as Boxscore touring revenue." Migos, Travis Scott, and Eminem are also ahead of her.

Artist of the Year: based on an artist's chart performance on the Billboard Hot 100, Billboard 200 and Social 50, as well as Boxscore touring revenue.
If AOTY & Artist 100 are supposed to be based on the same measurement/formula, then why would someone performing better on Hot 100/Billboard 200/Social 50 not be higher on Artist 100? It's statistically impossible to be ahead in every department but be ranked lower. + Touring does not count for Artist 100, so that would not be a reason why.
I think they have different formulas. And the Artist 100 formula clearly upweighs pure sales to a much higher degree than Billboard 200/Hot 100. That's why Lionel Richie was ranked higher that week his live album did 65K units while Young Thug did 131K units, and Young Thug actually had 9 songs on Hot 100.

Yes, it would definitely seem that the weekly Artist 100 chart and the Top Artists of the year chart are tabulated differently.

All of this makes me wonder how Billboard will calculate for the Artist of the Decade honor. Will acts who have peaked higher in the Artist of the Year chart be favored above acts who haven't? Will acts who have peaked higher in the Artist 100 be favored over acts that haven't? Will touring be measured as well? Will they use chart points or raw sale figures? So many ways Billboard could go and we have no idea what they'll actually do.
