Does anyone know how many copies The Strokes' "Room on Fire" has sold since its release? It cant be much more than 200-250K. I don't want to base the quality of music on how much it has sold, but I'm so glad that their album looks to be a commercial flop.
I'm so sick of every music magazine shoving this band down the public's throat when it is clear that not many people give two craps about The Strokes or their music. You would think these guys were the second coming of The Beatles if you listened to most magazines who put them on the cover every possible chance they get.
When will music publications see the light and get over telling us how great this band is?

I like '12:51' though! That's the only song I've heard from them but it's fun! :)

Actually, I agree with both of you.
If the magazines are gonna hype somebody up like this, they better be daaaaaamn good. I like all the songs I've heard from The Strokes, but all the hype has built them a large fanbase consisting of mostly eliteist snobs and insecure listeners that can't decide on their own what they should listen to.
I think a lot of people are pissed about these bands like The Strokes being shoved down their throats. There's a lot of people that love The White Stripes, but week in and week out they're near the bottom of the Callout and RateTheMusic standings. Probably because they're getting mostly 5's and 1's, whereas a song like "Meant To Live" is probably getting all 5's, 4's, and 3's and is able to rank near the top.
And obviously it'll end whenever all these current bands are played out and somebody else tries something different (not necessarily new). I think by the end of 2004 we'll get that.

I actually like the Strokes music. I have the first cd (I think it is the first, who knows anymore with all these bands some coming from indie labels some not) and really like it.
Yet, I think the critical praise is way overdone. Let's put it this way, I like other things a lot more that don't don't even hit the radar screen when it comes to critics.
