I think Post sees the trap bubble is about to burst and he's trying to navigate himself into the possible trends of the '20s. We'll see if he's successful at that. Unfortunately, not everyone can be Rihanna or Drake (or even Mariah Carey and Madonna at their peak) and release singles/albums constantly, all with different styles, and have the vast majority of them be a success. We’ll see though.

Trap is so long in the tooth at this point. It is understandable why Post Malone chose this direction. We are entering a new decade and new trends have to pop up and leave the trends of this decade behind.

I don't think trap music is magically going to evaporate once the calendar flips to January 1, 2020. It might die out but it'll take some take before that happens. The whole emo wave of rap started off late in the last decade and is still here now. Waves, especially in rap music, just don't disappear once they arrive and get embedded into the fabric of the genre.
I think Post Malone has always wanted the freedom to make whatever kind of music he wanted to make. If anything, him making songs with rap elements is a phase for him and he'll move on to experimenting with other genres of music.

When Drake and Rihanna incorporate new styles in their music, they pick something current, or something that's bubbling under the surface. And it's usually done in good taste.
If the 2000s sounding, alt-pop/rock/whatever sound of songs like Circles is the new hot trend for the next decade, then please shoot me now.

I mean, artists like Dominic Fike and Pup all released some acclaimed stuff this year that are popular under the charts

Feelings and Don't Call Me Angel, right? I don't know of any other ones except the ones from the bubbling under chart like Hot Girl Bummer.

Intro by DaBaby.
I don't see it making too much impact though, maybe Top 40/30 at most. #2 on AM and #31 on Spotify.

DaBaby's album intro is now #1 on AM.
Crazy how big he's gotten over the past few months. His next album is gonna be huge and it should be dropping in the next week or 2

Crazy how Maroon 5 has been the topic of discussion throughout this thread at all times except for when it SHOULD be

This is probably super premature to say, but I think DaBaby has the potential to be the new era's T.I. if he continues his winning streak. He has a ton of charisma and personality, he has the story to back up what he raps about, and he's beginning to show more emotional variety in his music, as evident from Intro. I think his next album will do between 110k and 130k units first week (performing similarly to Young Thug's new album).

We need to stop doing this thing where we attack people for expressing how they feel about a musician or their music. That's exactly what this forum is for. The reason why Goodbyes and Circles are flopping is because they're truly terrible, overly generic radio songs. It has nothing to do with the timing or overexposure. Post's fans are simply noticing that he's starting to sound like Maroon 5 knockoff and they're not liking it. ddlz expressed his opinion about Post Malone's music and while I don't agree with it, there was absolutely no reason for anyone to jump to calling him mentally weak, saying he has shortcomings or saying he hates Post Malone. He's already acknowledged that he's a fan, but a fan who is displeased with the direction he went for his latest effort. I'm sure he's not the only Post Malone fan who feels that way. He just happens to be the only one on this forum who feels that way and is making it known. We can all discuss things, even things we don't agree on, without resorting to insults or name-calling. All it takes is for one person to start and for the next person to follow and that kind of energy isn't needed here. It's safe to assume all of us here are music lovers, which is why we dedicate time out of our lives to come on here and have discussions about music. If someone says something you don't agree with or something you know engaging with will lead to an argument, you can simply skip over their post or better yet start up another discussion that other people can join in on. I don't think it's okay that sometimes people get attacked or called names for simply expressing their opinions. That has got to stop. You're right, I disagree with the guy's opinion but that was no excuse for me to personally insult him. Sorry ddlz, I'll try to be less of a dick in the future lol.

I was a couple pages behind and while catching up someone was trying to argue that both of Post Malone top five singles are flopping so yeah, I stopped reading at that point.

Memories will debut top 30, maybe 20. Sales are hot, streams are ok, and it has a radio deal.

I didn't say trap is going away, but it won't be the dominate trend forever. Disco never really died but it wasn't profitable to be a disco artist in 1981. Post wants commercial success, so I think he doesn't want to hitch his wagon too tightly to a sound that might be passé (at least as far as the Hot 100 is concerned) in a couple of years. No single sound dominates forever.

Trap music already peaked last year. All the biggest hits this year have been hip hop/pop hybrids, like 7 Rings, Old Town Road, Bad Guy, Truth Hurts, Wow., Goodbyes, or just straight pop, like Shallow, Sucker, Happier, High Hopes, Me!, Senorita, You Need To Calm Down, I Don’t Care, etc. The only huge straight rap hits are Ransom, No Guidance, Suge and Mobey in The Grave.

It looks like Drake's "Behind Bars" gives him another chart entry, although only at #75.

Despite all this Post Malone argument, I think we could all agree that the new Maroon 5 song is bland and forgettable.

No Guidance is rap now? And the vast majority of the biggest rap artists haven't been in album cycles this year unlike last year and unlike the dozens of popstars you just named. The biggest rappers to be actually active this year are Juice Wrld and A Boogie which tells you a lot. Dumb to think rap has peaked

Despite all this Post Malone argument, I think we could all agree that the new Maroon 5 song is bland and forgettable. If one cannot agree on such basic and fundamental truths, there is little hope on us agreeing on anything. That said, it is precisely the sort of pop song that ten year old me would have loved.

My only criticism about him is that he has a single flow that he uses on each and every single song. Listening to his debut album was a chore because every song sounded the same. But yeah, I could see a new album from him moving up to 100K units in the first week.

The biggest rap artists didn't put out albums this year. That's the only reason why it seems like (t)rap music has slowed down. Let's revisit this discussion next year.

I'd say this has been a fairly diverse year for hits. Smash hits - Old Town Road (trap/country fusion), Bad Guy (pop), Talk (pop), Truth Hurts (pop rap), Senorita (pop), Sunflower (pop), Wow. (pop rap), Happier (pop), Sucker (pop), High Hopes (pop), 7 Rings (trap/pop fusion) Decently sized hits - I Don't Care (pop), Middle Child (rap), Ransom (rap), Goodbyes (pop rap), Circles (pop), No Guidance (R&B), Someone You Loved (pop), Panini (pop rap) Minor hits - Please Me (pop rap), Thotiana (rap), Shallow (country), Sweet But Psycho (pop), Dancing With A Stranger (pop), Break Up With Your Boyfriend, I'm Bored (pop), Money in the Grave (rap), Suge (rap) Miserable flops - ME! (trash), You Need To Calm Down (???), Never Really Over (this one's actually good), Hey Look Ma, I Made It (Brendon Urie is the new Adam Levine), Megatron (megaflop, made Nicki Minaj retire), Homicide (real hip-hop is back!!!), Boyfriend (take a break please, Ariana) 7/27 of these are rap fusions, 5/27 are full blown rap, and 13/27 are full blown pop (2/27 are other). Overall you split pretty evenly, which is good for a year with no big name rappers dropping and all the big pop stars coming out.
