It's crazy how repeating looks to be repeating itself. Back in 2015, Adele came out of nowhere and was a monster on both of the main charts. Bieber released around the same time. Rihanna delayed her album to not be overshadowed by Adele. Ariana's new single came and went (Focus). One Direction also released new music.

I Believe may have had a short chart life but the song quite made an impact, I still hear it being performed on singing competitions or other live specials. It's probably the next most popular Idol coronation song next to A Moment Like This.

Hell, I could see a case for "Home" being bigger than "A Moment like This" even. Then there's David Cook's "The Time of My Life," which wound up performing pretty well too.

I forgot about Home because it's not the typical Idol coronation ballad plus the latter seasons of Idol just felt less remarkable than the first 8 which felt like such a big deal back then.
The Time of My Life was big in my country too but I just don't hear it anymore unlike A Moment Like This and I Believe which are really popular in singing contests here and karaoke lol

QUESTION:
• Mariah Carey has 18 Hot 100 number ones.
• Rihanna has 14 Hot 100 number ones.
Does Rihanna still stand a chance in tying/surpassing Mariah Carey sometime soon, overall? What does everybody think?
(I just having this conversation on another forum).
#R9 will definitely give her a 15th number one, and possibly her 16th depending on how successful the era, is but, of course, that’s not guaranteed. Also, with how slow Rihanna has been releasing singles since 2016, and with how indecisive single success is in the streaming era (for the most part) I’m not sure.
Personally, I’d love to see Rihanna tie The Beatles - she’s 6 number ones away. That would be....... 😫😭🤯.

To be honest, I thought she would have beaten Mariah's record by now given how fast she bagged those #1s and her pace of releasing a new album nearly every year but this 3-year hiatus is something I didn't expect from her. Maybe she still can beat her but if you ask me, probably not anymore as she is at the age where pop stars have a hard time getting chart success anymore.

Okay it's not on the charts yet but I hope Outnumbered by Dermot Kennedy doesn't crossover. Between Lewis Capaldi and Dean Lewis, I really really really hope mediocrely sung adult-alternative doesn't become a trend coming into the 2020s.

To be fair, Outnumbered is definitely better than Be Alright or SYL with more of a spark and better vocals, but if it crossing over starts a trend then I pray it doesn’t.

It’s too Bad mediocrely sung hip hop is already a successful trend.

That's hard to predict, although i would say that she won't because music doesen't look like her main interest anymore. Don't forget also that Mariah could get her 19th #1 this christmas, so Rihanna would need five more number ones.

Even if Mariah Carey scores her 19th number one this year, Rihanna could still score her 15th number one before or after that happens, and possibly another, which would still keep in a close race of tying/surpassing Carey. It’s not impossible (AT ALL) given how Rihanna is to Mariah Carey/The Beatles, but it all depends on the trajectory in which Rihanna releases singles from 2020 onward and if they’re well received at radio/streaming.

I really wish we got grime or their house revival instead, I would’ve loved to see Vossi Bop or Piece of Your Heart on the charts.

I'm kind of curious to know what country you live in actually, because while I Believe was absolutely not a big hit at all in the U.S., at least in terms of airplay, I did a quick chart search and it didn't seem to be big anywhere else.

My predictions for the week. I'm factoring in an estimate of what the bundles could've given HitR, if I give it my non-bundle estimate (8k sales), it's still at a safe 36.9k chart points.

The point was never that it was a big hit. It was that it’s gained a new life in terms of impact. It’s often covered in singing competitions or used at graduations, etc.

Does anyone think Rhythm + Flow could impact the charts the same way American Idol and The Voice have in the past? Like is it possible a few rappers could get big off of it?

Streaming is a weird format for singing shows. A lot of people will not even find the show until it's over, so the chart impact will be spread out over multiple weeks instead of a single one like with American Idol and the like... Unless someone really breaks out big. But I feel like America is done with singing show stars for a while. The last one to get a hit was Phillip Phillips IIRC. Or technically the 5H ladies...

I'm amazed that No Guidance is still increasing. 10K Hours is primed to be a radio smash. Lizzo has another hit on her hands with Good As Hell. Same with Wale with On Chill, Post Malone with Circles and Maroon 5 with Memories. Good updates today.

Looks like I was getting ahead of myself by saying Circles wouldn't have the same longevity as the BB&B singles. It's looking to be the Better Now of this album cycle (with Sunflower being the Rockstar and Wow. being the Psycho). Goodbyes is a bit of an outlier, but it's still a respectably sized hit even if it didn't reach quite the same heights as Post's other singles.
