"Beautiful Crazy" might have been overplayed as hell this last year (I mean, even I have heard it way too many times, and I didn't even listen to country radio in 2019!) However, it is still a really good song. The melody is very pleasant. It stands out in a positive way for being as stripped down as it is, compared to the rest of this album which is pretty sonically generic and tends to blend together. I thought it was really funny in Martina's podcast a couple months ago when Martina and Runaway June were making fun of this song for referring to the lady as "crazy" because she does totally normal things like starting her day with coffee and finishing it with wine  Like, really, why is she crazy for just living her life and having a personality? It makes no sense, and the sexism wrapped up in chivalry jumps out if you think about it too hard, but I still think melodically this song is one of the strong points on this album! |

Wait, I just realized my top 5 was the top 5!!! Yay!!!
"Houston, We Got A Problem" was a nice discovery. Oddly enough the thing that really hooked me was the unexpected note progression on the "It ain't got you" line near the end of the chorus. The way he sustained "you" in a pretty soft voice and did that little run thing, I was like "Oh, this is just delightful"! And then I listened to the song again :)

It's your #2, "Hurricane"  Along with you and those four others who lost a #2, ClevelandRox and I both score a perfect ranking while the lowest rank is George Strait Junkie who is happy to finally say good riddance to a #16. I absolutely love this song. As the lead single, it happens to be the first song I ever heard from Luke Combs and I instantly put him on my stan list. I think the chorus in particular is a driving force with this song. |

This song is one of those dumb smart songs that never gets overplayed. I kind of feel the same about Whiskey Glasses and that first line being so infectious, funny, and filled with that double entendre.
But this whole song has that kind of wordplay and that dumb smart vibe. You can't not like this song!

Tbh I only listened to his debut album once when it came out because everyone was praising it, and I wasn't particularly enamored with it because of how same-y it feels by the time you get to the end, so I never listened to it again. So I never heard the bonus tracks when they came out. As far as his second album goes... I plead the 5th ;) But that's why these album rankdowns are so great! I make so many great discoveries and come to appreciate an artist's artistry even more than just listening on my own. That's why I do ALL the country rankdowns rather than picking and choosing the artists I already know I love :) |
