#20: Joke's on you, Doc, you weren't even the highest ranker. The other Def Lep song in this rankdown is not bad (so it'll probably make the top ten), but this is more representative of the...problematic side of the band. It's not bad, and certainly not the worst that the band has to offer, but "Photograph", this sure as hell isn't. #19: Well, this is hilarious, given my reply to Tom yesterday. Not that I would have wanted it to do better than "Purple Rain" or "I Would Die 4 U", anyway, but geez. #18: Cool to see this do so well. I haven't always liked Howard Jones, but this was fine. #17: Funnily enough, the Heart songs in these Lost Hits rankdowns are songs that I, genuinely, think are better than their big 80's hits, especially this one. #16: WHAT?!?! I thought that, out of every song in my top ten, this was one of the three safest bets to get to the RD top ten. To say that I'm shocked would be an understatement. I'm stunned that a couple of songs, in particular, outlasted Janet, including a song I ranked not far below it.

#24. The Final Countdown - EuropeSimply magical. Wait Up. Hold the phone. Troy has a Glam Metal band at #12. Is that a typo? yup, I agree with Red that this is the only worthwhile thing this band ever did...plus, it has become meme-worthy ever since its use in GOB’s magic show performance on Arrested Development...another in ultimate guilty pleasures

We've only ranked one other song by the artist at #15. None of this song's top 10s are top 5s.

Up next at #14 is the best performing song to have never been in the top ten at any point. This is the artist's first 80s rankdown appearance. Another poster's #1 will fall here.
Best rankdown position: 11 Worst rankdown position: 24 Average position: 16.3 SD Rank: 24th lowest Ranking distribution: Top 10s: 4 11 to 25s: 3 26 to 50s: 9 51 to 75s: 1 76 to 90s: 0 Bottom 10s: 0

We haven't seen the artist at #13 before in an 80s rankdown. This is the most divisive remaining song with its SD being the highest of all songs still alive in the rankdown.
Best rankdown position: 10 Worst rankdown position: 22 Average position: 14.8 SD Rank: 11th highest Ranking distribution: Top 10s: 6 11 to 25s: 6 26 to 50s: 2 51 to 75s: 1 76 to 90s: 1 Bottom 10s: 1

At #12 is an artist that we ranked only once in the 80s Hot 100 rankdowns. 4 of this song's top 10s are top 5s.
Best rankdown position: 9 Worst rankdown position: 31 Average position: 16.3 SD Rank: 46th highest Ranking distribution: Top 10s: 6 11 to 25s: 4 26 to 50s: 5 51 to 75s: 1 76 to 90s: 1 Bottom 10s: 0

The song finishing at #11 missed the top ten by only 4 points. 2 posters will be despaired as their #1 goes out here. This reveal is heartbreaking to me as well since I also strongly considered ranking this song at #1.
Best rankdown position: 9 Worst rankdown position: 25 Average position: 12.3 SD Rank: 41st highest Ranking distribution: Top 10s: 5 11 to 25s: 5 26 to 50s: 5 51 to 75s: 1 76 to 90s: 1 Bottom 10s: 0

#15: Feels weird to be in the bottom half of rankings here. This is solid. #14: Yeah, I figured this would miss the top ten. I'm shocked I ranked this higher than gates. What a way for Roy to go out. #13: Well, this is not the song I was expecting. I figured this would be divisive, though, and Doc not ranking this bottom 20 is a bit of an upset. #12: And there's my lowest remaining, which hurts, because I really do like "Something About You". This wasn't quite on that level, though. #11: And this wasn't what I was expecting, either. I was thinking to myself, "Oh god, it's really going to finish #11, isn't it..." Instead, it's the only song remaining that wasn't in my top 25. I swear, though, I do like this. It's one of the better Def Lep songs. But this also means that I really liked every song in the top ten.
How on earth did my #1 make it?

Surprised for the love for the Aussies - Icehouse and Midnight Oil. I'm rooting for Pet Shop Boys, but would be thrilled with most of these. These are my favorite Cyndi Lauper and Dead or Alive singles.

Somewhat surprising Top 10, but not complaining. I like all 10 songs. Hard to predict who is going to win... I hope it's my all time favorite music act.

Been quietly following along (and for some reason I thought I had submitted for this as I did have a list ready - whoops) but "Hysteria" would have been my No. 1. Sad to see it miss the Top 10 but not surprised as Def Leppard remains underrated on this board. Not too keen on the Top 10 so I guess I'm rooting for "A Little Respect."

If Women (also an 1987 single that only went to #80) had been in the mix, I would have surely voted for that in my Top 10. Animal is good but not great IMO. Hysteria is a very good song, but I've heard it probably too many times to fairly evaluate it. (See Every Breath You Take by the Police, Losing My Religion by REM, all songs that have been played WAY too many times for my liking)

I can't begrudge a song just because it's been overplayed. A good song is a good song regardless of how many times I've heard it on the radio or played it myself. "Hysteria" deserved Top 10 here, IMO, especially over some other songs (which I shall not mention) that did make it. Oh and spoiler for Billboard 1991, can we expect a lower rank for "Losing My Religion" from you? =P

I like the synth arrangement in this song. This sounds like a golden oldie from the 1960s, but with 1980s production quality. Sweeet. This song is a masterpiece. It's a sophisticated pop song with a funky synth and an interesting middle eight.
The part where they belt out "LOST WITHOUT LOOOOVE!" gets me every time.

I have a hard time feigning enthusiasm regarding severely overplayed songs, which I know impacts my scores on an unconscious level. Sadly, Losing My Religion, would fall 1/2 way down the list of REM songs (and 1991 songs) due to this. I'm guessing it will land around #40, but should be Top 20. I'll work on it.

Oh yes the infamous video where they stretched Ann vertically to make her look thinner but alien-like was more the end result. To add insult to injury most of her shots are in the back of the stage in a drum cage swallowed up by dry ice. Depressing some of the treatment they had to put up with in the 80s, maybe why they don’t relish those memories. Anyhow this version used in the video is an upgrade, it’s the radio remix which Spotify doesn’t seem to have. The main difference is the two new lines they recorded that appear at the end of the chorus, “She’s setting you up my friend' and 'She’s gonna break your heart again”. I think these vocal flourishes elevate the song a little even if for the shade of them. I especially enjoy this one because it’s not expected, it has a more laid-back summery vibe for a Heart song and Nancy sparkles on lead. Excited it made the Top 20! I didnt expect that.
