#34. Eli Young Band - "Crazy Girl"

It reached #1 in November. The song would go on to finish #1 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs (now Airplay) year-end chart -- the most heard song on country radio in 2011. It was written by Lee Brice and Liz Rose.
I remember first hearing this song on a their MySpace account (god I'm old lol) and loving it from the first note. I wasn't expecting a #1 hit and one of the biggest hits of the year, so I was thrilled for EYB when this did so well for them. It's definitely gotten beaten to death at radio but I loved the song so much from the moment it was released, that didn't factor into my ranking. The melody is phenomenal and the track is such an earworm. It's not my absolute favorite EYB song but in a year like this (weaker than most), it stands out above most.

"Felt Good on My Lips" is a jam! "Crazy Girl" is good also but I like the follow-up better.

That was a brutal stretch! Lost two of my top 3 songs! :( I’ll forever be sad that Ashton didn’t “make it”. Such a talent! I’m not a huge EYB fan but I absolutely LOVE Crazy Girl. So well written and his voice is crazy good on it.

[/div][/div][/quote] I probably underranked "Crazy Girl" a tad as a result of the overplay it suffered but it's still a great song. And I'm very glad for the things it did for EYB's career. Even still, that album was loaded with great material and I don't think i'd rank it inside the top 5 from Life At Best. Glad it was able to make the the 40 here, very much deserved, and I know EYB has some detractors.

I appreciate that Martina was trying to do something different, but for someone with such a GORGEOUS voice, it sounds like shes drunk and slurring her words through most of the verses and entire chorus of "Teenage Daughters." Not sure where that came from.

"Say Goodnight" was one of the biggest WTF single picks I've ever seen in my life.

"Skeletons" and "The Fight" were easily the two best non-singles on that album that SHOULD have been singles!!! So sad neither got released. I like "Say Goodnight" but it definitely should not have been a single.

“Teenage Daughters” is one of those rare songs where public opinion started out horribly, but has seemed to soften considerably over time. Compare the outcry when it was first released 9 years ago to the way it gets talked about nowadays, and the difference is stark! I can’t imagine that 9 years ago we would have put it above songs like “Crazy Girl”, “Felt Good On My Lips”, etc.
I will say, as jarring as the studio vocal seemed to be, the song comes together live surprisingly well. I mean, we only need to look as far as Martina’s 2011 CMA performance, which shocked everybody for being better than they expected. The personality is spot on and the vocal works well in concert. The song was a huge head scratcher of a single choice for sure, but I think over time people overwhelmingly have come to appreciate what Martina was trying to do.

Also, yes, both of Reba’s remaining songs absolutely deserve to still be here! They kick ass from a quality standpoint. This goes to show how stupid it was for radio to drop her like a hot potato in the second half of this album era...

This goes to show how stupid it was for radio to drop her like a hot potato in the second half of this album era... I completely agree here. I love "If I Were A Boy" but I have to wonder if maybe they wouldn't have dropped her if that song hadn't been released as a single. It's pretty much proven ("Be A Light" and the debut/peak of "Going Out Like That" notwithstanding) to have killed her radio career entirely. All I ever hear now (if I'm lucky to hear her at all) is either "Turn On The Radio," "Consider Me Gone" or something from the 90s. Which is sad because she still deserves consistent radio airplay of BOTH her hits from time to time and her newer songs--if only to show the youngins how you do it!! As for "Somebody's Chelsea," it baffles me how that didn't go right to #1. I absolutely love that song; it's gorgeous and one of my favorites from her entire career.

"Felt Good On My Lips" I used to like a lot more, but it's soured on me in the years since it was current. I don't hate it but it's fallen close to the bottom for Tim. "Crazy Girl" is so catchy and has a great melody! I also used to like this one more than I do now however as I find something a bit off with the production. Still a great song. Lol at .indulgecountry's ranking, I knew you didn't like it but I didn't think last place haha "Teenage Daughters" remains overhated, I like the slurry sound, made me think of a tired mother "Look It Up" is fantastic as is Ashton, I can't imagine why so many of you had this that low!?! "Drink Myself Single" may be my least favorite of Sunny's singles but it's still a very great song that she just brings such a great attitude to! I'm very happy to see her get this high with all her singles!

I will say this in regards to Reba she had maybe 1 maybe 2 years left in terms of relevancy at country radio at most even if the label released the more radio friendly options from that album. Because remember this year was right around the time the seeds of bro-country were planted (see "Country Girl (Shake It For Me)" and by 2014 every solo women who was not Carrie or Miranda, their radio career essentially died or at best they were a token placeholder with one hit during the bro country craze to make country music look a bit less sexist during 2012-2014 when the bro-country boom really took off (Jana Kramer, Kacey Musgraves, Sheryl Crow, Cassadee Pope, Danielle Bradbery) before it died out in the mid 2010s (around the time Kelsea Ballerini, Maren Morris and to a lesser extent Carly Pearce broke through). I think "If I Were A Boy" sped up the process but I don't think Reba had many hits in her left given where country music was headed (see Martina McBride have one last Top 10 with "I'm Gonna Love You Through It").

There is just something dark in the undertones of this song that make it work so well, and despite radio overplay I still enjoy it.

Oh I knew I had that #1 loss coming sooner or later. I absolutely love "Somebody's Chelsea," it's one of my all-time favorite Reba songs, and I am MORE than happy with its achievement here! Out of 125 songs I'd say making it into the Top 30 is a hell of a feat!
