what are some songs that got a fat boost from a televised performance? specifically those which may not have been doing that well beforehand but went on to become smashes largely because of the publicity the performance caused. off the top of my head, there's:
Sam Smith - Stay With Me James Bay - Let It Go Multiple Superbowl performance songs (most recently Million Reasons)
what else??

I think P!nk's Glitter In The Air debuted at #18 after her performance at the Grammy Awards.

Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper's multiple performances of "Shallow" so close together at the beginning of the year helped it return to pop radio after being purged and go on to hit #1 on the Hot 100.

Also Gaga: 'Million Reasons'. Was looking like it was going to die before it really went anywhere, then it was included in her Superbowl performance and it blew up from there.

^ I don't think that fits. GAH was already going viral the same way TH did, the VMA performance was a springboard to capitalize on the momentum it was getting. The performance was not the cause of it blowing up; it was an effect of it starting to blow up.

I thought the VMA performance was ultimately responsible for making it chart (and that is confirmed by Wikipedia). Well, I admit Iβm not very aware of the songs that go viral, and it makes sense. After all, why would she waste her VMA performance with a song from 2016 when she had a whole album to promote this year.

We Are Young and Forget You blew up after being performed on Glee. That probably doesn't count, but thought I'd mention it. Forget You blew up after it got nominated for a Grammy award.

Tennessee Whiskey by Chris Stapleton and Justin Timberlake at the 2015 C.M.A. Awards. It helped Traveller re-enter the top 200 at #1 (the first album to do so) and help Tennessee Whiskey reach six times platinum (not bad for a non-single). That should reach seven times platinum before the year is over. I love C.S. and J.T.!

(ie. it couldn't chart until it had enough points for top 50). It was already gaining pretty significant steam on streaming and sales on its own; the VMA performance was the tipping point to get it enough chart points to chart, but the song did actually take off on its own first. It's an unusual situation.

"Someone Like You" blew up after the BRITs I believe?
"Shallow" on the Oscars and "Million Reasons" on Superbowl
"Piece by Piece" on Idol
"Drunk in Love" after the Grammys?

What was the perfromance? iirc it was just on some random late night talk show?? probably the only example i can think of where it wasn't performed on a massive scale.

Madonna's "Like a Virgin" at the first MTV VMA's in 1984, though it wasn't actually released until a couple of months later.
