Congrats Harry! I’d go with Watermelon Sugar then Falling! By then it should be around Grammy’s which hopefully will give some love to Harry, nominations-wise. I don’t think anything will do as well as adore you. But even a top 15 would be really good to get radio used to playing him.

If this breaks the spin record I stg
“Truth Hurts” felt like enough of an event that it’d deserve 20,000 spins, I’d be annoyed if this did it. It isn’t nearly enough of a cultural phenomenon

FRIDAY 4/10 UPDATE:POP:1 1 HARRY STYLES Adore You 19301 18273 1028 90.575 −235 Spins −557 Bullet −0.672 Audience HOT AC:5 5 HARRY STYLES Adore You 5511 4973 538 26.047 +81 Spins +14 Bullet +0.432 Audience AC:17 15 HARRY STYLES Adore You 367 321 46 1.942 +11 Spins +24 Bullet +0.338 Audience I really don’t understand how radio continues to get away with these obvious stunts. One week ago “Adore You” was all of a sudden resurgent, stomping to #1. Now that it’s there, it suddenly stops dead in its tracks and begins to collapse in a matter of a 48 hour window. “Blinding Lights” is up next, but that seems like a natural climb and will probably stay at #1 for a few weeks. Then after that it will be “My Oh My” that will suddenly receive the 1 week surge to get it to #1. These antics between the label and radio are so obvious. But the question is, why do they do it? Does it really matter if songs hit #1 on Pop radio. Who checks for that?

(Well besides us chart geeks/watchers) it's been a marketing strategy, promotional tool since the beginning of time, you can check old archives of Billboard Magazine and Radio & Records and see for yourself. Even top 20, top 10, top 5, top 3 hits for artists on Pop, Hot AC, Alternative, Rhytmic, etc got banners and promotion on music magazines and even in this day and age Mediabase, radio stations around the country do it. Radio is still important, some people here saying it's not are not telling the truth. and if you're complaining about Pop you should see how extreme this is on Urban, Country and Rhythmic lmao, the free falls from #1 are almost an every week thing...

These "1 week at #1 and done" stunts weren't the norm here on CHR until a couple years ago (I recall "Sorry Not Sorry" by Demi being one of the earliest examples, along with "Send My Love (To Your New Lover)". Then of course we had the truly blatant stuff like "Look What You Made Me Do"... it's becoming the new normal on the format that everything within striking distance will go #1, even if just for a single Sunday.
Before the last few years this was normal on the Country format. Songs would go #1 with a massive bullet and then drop out of the top 5 the next week.

Before the last few years this was normal on the Country format. Songs would go #1 with a massive bullet and then drop out of the top 5 the next week. How many songs have peaked at #2 in the last few years? I’m curious to see how little this happens now. I would also like further research into what stations in particular participate in the sudden surge to get a song to #1. For example, is it a bunch of IHeartRadio stations that do it together? Is it the same markets? Things can’t be so obviously coordinated without knowing how things are lining up behind the scenes. Also, how does this happen legally? I imagine the label sending an email to radio programmers encouraging them to boost into power rotation. But how does it always happen in finesse? For example, Song B literally powers to #1 for just one Sunday and that requires Song A, which is the current #1, to drastically stall in order for Song B to catch #1 by its tail. Does that mean that Song B’s record label is asking radio programmers to cut spins on song A in order to boost Song B? Something doesn’t sit well here. Is there never a chance that a song would miss #1 in these coordinated attempts? This doesn’t seem to happen anymore.

It's not like he went from #10 to #1 in a week. He's been steadily climbing and was close, so a little push at the end? Eh, I don't care.
But, I also think there should be a short limit on how many weeks a song can spend at #1 before getting out of the way, so maybe don't listen to me. Lol

I don't have the info you're asking for, but I do remember being floored that "This is What You Came For" was allowed to peak at #2 "only". I believe it was the single #2 hit of that year? I might be wrong tho.

degenfunnily enough it feels like it's actually become slightly LESS prevalent in the last year or so, with Roxanne and Hot Girl Bummer both having clear shots at #1 but not receiving that final push. before them, the last song i can think of that peaked at #2 is Dancing With a Stranger i think.

^ Ariana’s breathin’ was another song that peaked at #2 on Pop behind High Hopes.
As for TIWYCF, that song got stuck behind Cheap Thrills.

Dancing with a Stranger peaked at #2 on Billboard Pop and #1 on Mediabase, I'm pretty sure.
Breathin' was really unfortunate. It actually outpeaked NTLTC and GIAW in spins/audience, but both of those hit #1.
As for this song, I don't mind the push. It was going to peak at #2 with a very high spin count. It was deserving, just had the misfortune of peaking at the same time as one of the year's biggest hits.
I'd definitely be interested to see which songs peaked at #2 over the past few years. It had definitely become rare until Roxanne and Hot Girl Bummer did it.

I don't really seem any problem with it haha. Maybe if it was blocking a more 'worthy' song that would not be able to hit the top as a result? But here, Blinding Lights is obviously hitting #1 at some point. Adore You has shown clear longevity and clear appeal. Ensuring it got a #1 'just in case' was just smart business, it sounds far better to claim to a #1 pop hit than a 'top 2' or 'top 3' haha.
Add to the fact that this happens in plenty of other formats, notably country where this is essentially every number one lol, I don't think this is bad at all.

But it also didn't perform as well as the other singles on Sweetener. I can't think of any other songs that peaked at #2 off the top of my head.

"Close to Me" by Ellie Goulding & "Bad at Love" by Halsey both peaked at number 2, the former was blocked by "7 rings" and the latter by Ed Sheeran's "Perfect"

FRINDS was blocked by Girls Like You too from memory. They're not completely rare, but in 2019 especially they were uncommon
