Billboard doesn't acknowledge this anymore, but 70 years ago, in 1949, Spike Jones hit #1 with "All I Want for Christmas (Is My Two Front Teeth)". Just a fun little tidbit.
"The Chipmunk Song (Christmas Don't Be Late)" is the only other Christmas #1 in the history of the Hot 100, but prior to that there were "White Christmas" (Bing Crosby, 1942), "Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!" (Vaughn Monroe, 1946), the aforementioned Spike Jones song, "Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer" (Gene Autry, 1950), and "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" (Jimmy Boyd, 1952). All beloved classics that have stood the test of time, whatever the renditions be.
(I apologize if anyone's mentioned these already, I haven't seen it)

even I would typically consider myself a weeknd fan but i'm starting to feel like he's becoming a one-trick pony. or rather two-trick pony. when i first listened to Heartless, after only like 30 seconds, i already knew what the entire song would sound like. same goes for Blinding Lights. i like both of the songs, but neither of them are songs that i'd regularly play myself because i've heard it all before from him. he's losing his touch. Heartless is just the same thing he did on King of the Fall, Party Monster, and Reminder except less catchy and less interesting. There was no reason to assume it was going to be a big hit outside of its debut week. Once it plummets from radio, it's going to be out of the top 40 and it will probably be too late to start giving Blinding Lights a formal push. Ngl, this is pretty worrying and makes me think the album is not going to perform that well (like sub-300k). Yep. I was excited when i saw the cover art (because the cover art leaked and was going through fan circles on twitter a few days before release), because it kind of looked like a fresh concept. but then i heard the song and i actually shrugged after it finished. i never did that to a new weeknd release before (i've been a fan of his music since trilogy). Like i said, he's losing his touch and it's a bit worrying and sad to see. He needs to re-consider his approach ASAP because Heartless is already #18 on Spotify and #15 on Apple Music, lol. It seems like the only two songs he can do (in terms of his lyrical content/approaches) are "I'm addicted to drugs and sex and money and I'm an asshole" or "… so here's my ode to a past relationship that ended in flames"

Mariah was having NONE of the Hot 100 hoes' bulls**t. SHUT. IT. DOWN. QUEEN. This! Christmas music > mumble rap! What mumble rap songs are there in the top 10 anyway? Hint: there aren't any

The term "mumble rap" lost all meaning years ago. It literally is just used to describe any hip-hop made past the year 2015.

Last year it was 15 or 16, and this year's effect is bigger so... 15 or 16 in the top 40 last year? I didn't realize it was that many. Wow. Hot 100 dated Jan 5, 2019 "thank u, next" (No. 1)
"All I Want For Christmas Is You" (No. 3) "Jingle Bell Rock" (No. 8) "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree" (No. 9) "A Holly Jolly Christmas" (No. 10) "The Christmas Song" (No. 11) "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year" (No. 13) - fell from No. 10 high "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" (No. 16) "Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow" (No. 20) "Last Christmas" (No. 25) "Sleigh Ride" (No. 26) "Here Comes Santa Claus" (No. 28) "Feliz Navidad" (No. 29) "Home for the Holidays" (No. 32) "White Christmas" (No. 34) "It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas" (No. 35) "Blue Christmas" (No. 40) "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)" (No. 42) "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" (No. 43) "Underneath the Tree" (No. 44) "Run Rudolph Run" (No. 45) "Jinge Bells" (No. 49) "Cozy Little Christmas" by Katy Perry (No. 53) "The Christmas Song" by Lauren Daigle (No. 55) Last year, 23 Christmas songs charted following Christmas Day. 21 of those songs were recurrent hits in the top 50. Kelly Clarkson's "Underneath the Tree" is the newest Christmas classic. Katy Perry's "Cozy Little Christmas" reached No. 53 despite being an Amazon music exclusive. (It hit #1 on Hot AC Airplay.) 16 Christmas songs made it into Top 40 that week. 4 were in the Top 10, though 5 reached the region overall.

The Billboard Best Sellers In Stores chart. Billboard also had 2 charts in the 1940's: Most Played Juke Box Records and Most Played by Jockeys (a very early pre-cursor to the Hot 100 Airplay / Radio Songs chart).

Best sellers, all of them. The chart's name kept changing from magazine to magazine in the 40s and 50s - makes my F3 searches much too complicated.

"The Chipmunk Song" was a better song though. At least it's not the worst #1 of the year ("Someone You Loved"). We're all just living in the moment of being positive and there's like people called haters and we give them POSITIVITY!

The fact all Mariah had to do was remove "We Belong Together" from iTunes for a week, and she'd have tied The Beatles in #1's. ("Shake It Off" would've joined her club)

Shocked about how big of a drop The Weeknd had. Saw a big drop coming though, the charts have been aiming in that direction for a while though. “HIGHEST IN THE ROOM” only had 3 weeks in the top 10. “BUWYG,IB” would have had 2 if it hit #1. “If I Can’t Have You”, & “You Need to Calm Down” all would’ve been the same if they hit #1.
Not a big fan of all these singles debuting high (#1 or #2) and then dropping into the 20’s tbh. Hope something changes this.

On another note, I just noticed kworb updated their digital song sales estimates for last week and Christmas Tree should be #1 in Digital Song Sales. Without it, the song that would have been #1 would like have set the new record low. Aren't new digital sales record lows pretty much bi-weekly occurrences at this point?

I personally enjoy the movement much better than songs like "Girls Like You" and even "Without Me", which I like, clogging up the top tier for 6+ months. That's why I used to prefer UK charts before they went crazy with the 10-week streaming rule and 3 songs per artist bs.

"I was just like, 'Okay, even if ["All I Want For Christmas Is You"] is No. 2, that’s a huge accomplishment.' Wow. I don’t even know what to say. We definitely wanted to kick it into high gear this year with the song to celebrate the 25th anniversary, but I definitely didn’t expect it to hit No. 1 two weeks before Christmas! Giiiiirl, the liees. lol She knows damn well she and her team were tracking this by the second. She was gabbing the minute it hit #3 at her concert. I can't with the Taylor-esq faux aloofness. lol Congrats Mariah! Now we can put to rest all the "will it or won't it top" chatter. lol

With such a historic feat happening, and the way music consumption keeps changing, I wonder if any other other classics might reach #1 at some point in time. Imagine "Bohemian Rhapsody" or "Thriller" finally making #1. All would be well and right in the world.

I love how Mariah remembers that the song hit #9 and #3 before. Someone said she's a chart geek like us, which adds up with that iconic "back to the Hot 100 #1 which you just performed, which is hard to get, not everybody has that to their credit" moment. Wonder how close a watch she keeps on the charts nowadays.
