Lowkey hoping we get a rock round next wait same the other day i was thinking about songs i would send for a hypothetical rock round That's basically my reason too after listening to my Spotify deciding to play some of the Fleetwood Mac songs I have in my library. So I ended up spiraling down and listening to a bunch of Fleetwood, Pat Benatar, Tom Petty, Alanis, The Turtles, Joan, etc

ROUND TEN - STORYTELLERSFeatured Song: Eminem feat. Dido - "Stan" (a song about Eminem's fan who also stalked him)
----------This should be interesting. Send a song that tells a specific story. This story can be real or fiction. Honestly, I don't really know how to describe this theme any further so if there's any confusion, you can just send any song in the PM and I'll tell you if it's eligible.Deadline: February 6th 4PM EST

s**t I've ran through like 4 very different options for this in my head
But I think I'm gonna settle on my favorite of the 4.
I was this close to sending these as other options
Lana Del Rey - "Doin Time" Kanye ft a billion people - "All Of The Lights" Or Carrie Underwood - "Two Black Cadillacs"

Yeah a bit, I do love the chorus though cause I love Rihanna Who I wish would maybe perhaps consider making music again but that ain't happening

I know its ironic that I was eliminated because of 90s Hip Hop but I'm shook nobody sent in something like Childrens Story or What Would You Do?
Hell if we're talking old school Country, go with The Old Man No One Loved from George Jones
This is an amazing playlist, not taking anything away from the 5, I'm just saying this category could've gone 5 million different directions

ROUND TEN - RESULTWelcome to the tenth elimination ceremony! Let me start this session by saying whoever goes home tonight, you've done a really great job by making it this far and for the four of you who survives, I wish you the best of luck. And secondly, thank you for tanooki and @matthewlam for giving their time to join us as this round's guest judges.
This is a very close round, the gap of scores between the person who got second and the person who got in the bottom two is only .8 points. That being said, we have a clear winner this time and that person is...{Spoiler} MAYMAN!Kendrick Lamar - "The Art Of Peer Pressure"You have been longing for this moment and now you have it! I'm happy that you take the critiques I gave you by started sending more risky choices and now it gave you your first win of the season! Congratulations!Sambalada: "I have only heard this album in full once and I'll be honest, though I think it's a great selection of songs, I don't found myself coming back to it. This song though, was a banger. The instrumental is hypnotic, and while I'm not a fan of the sing-talk Rap style, Kendrick does it as a genius artistic choice to get his story across to the audience's ears. It does feel like a very personal story, regardless if it's fiction or not, and I applaud that Kendrick can bring that. It's a high-quality song obviously." (8.1)MoD: "Kendrick Lamar is one of the greatest musicians of the decade, and songs like these are the base of this affirmation. A storytelling masterpiece from beginning to end, with every part saying something meaningful, and with the production being amazing and perfectly fitting with what Kendrick is trying to say, for example the different sections this song has with sirens and background voices and all that stuff. Additionally, his delivery is always so on point, you can really tell his feelings. Just a mindblowing piece of music overall." (9.5)Lukas: "If we were grading this based on the theme, this song would obviously get full marks on that. The lyrics here are outstanding and is the high point of this song. Complement this with strong vocals and you get an incredibly memorable song here." (9.5)Jug: "ABSOLUTELY ICONIC. When I first listened to GKMC, This was song I gravitated towards and learned first. Simple yet effective beat. Kendrick slaughters it like it's not even an effort, in both songwriting and his flow. The imagery is there so anyone can close their eyes and see the story unfolding. One lucky night with the homies indeed." (10)Tanooki: (9.3)Matthew lam: (9.9)TOTAL: 56.3 | AVERAGE: 9.38Next...{Spoiler} WALT91!TLC - "Waterfalls"After two consecutive rounds nearly avoiding the bottom two, you're back in the top 2! Other than Mayman's, your song is the only one who didn't get a score lower than an 8 and that boosted you over the other three!Sambalada: "TLC!!! I hardly ever listened to them outside of Rankdown purpose but that doesn't mean their songs aren't worth listening. All of their big hits are classics, and this song in particular has the defining quality of 90s pop and it sets off a nice mood. I love how smooth-running the beat is. Their voices blended together and create a perfect harmony. The hook is also super strong, it's very memorable and very easy to get stuck in your head." (8.3)MoD: "One of the chillest songs I can think of. The smooth production mixed with their sweet delivery really make this a really relaxing song, and the lyrics are also strong on this, such a non hateable song in my opinion." (8.7)Lukas: "The majority of their discography is great (especially their 90βs songs lol) but this song is a cut above the rest. The production and lyrics are great, and that beat is awesome and catchy. Need I say more?" (9.8)Jug: "So I'm in a VERY interesting position with this song. On one hand, I LOVE the production but on the other the vocals are not impressive. On one hand the imagery is there but on the other it's always been a pet peeve that the 2 stories didn't actually have anything to do with each other. 3 things save this song from too much negativity: First is Left Eye. She was always one of my favorite MCs and this song is her shining light. Second is absolutely the chorus and to an extent the icon status of this song. There are people out there that will debate this song was TLCs best over Red Light Special, No Scrubs, and others, and I can see their perspective. Lastly is that second verse. As far as I know, nobody was touching that subject back then and I absolutely respect the f**k out of it (Also lowkey I'm predicting this song for Pose Season 3 if we end up in the Mid 90s). Overall I'm happy this was sent in, but it just felt a bit too safe." (8.1)Tanooki: (8.2)Matthew lam: (8.5)TOTAL: 51.6 | AVERAGE: 8.6And the last person to escape the bottom two is...{Spoiler} TRILOGY!Neutral Milk Hotel - "Two-Headed Boy"Third call might sound impressive but at this point it means you barely dodged the bottom two, and when everyone remaining is a strong opponent, don't ever feel too safe! As you can see, displeasing even just one judge can almost put you in danger.Sambalada: "I don't know what Jeff Mangum is going through when he wrote In the Aeroplane Over the Sea but the poem style songwriting on this album is beautiful. This song, I don't really understand what the writer is trying to say, but one of the things I can say about it is it's structurally well-written. Those melodies are just gorgeous and the vocalist's delivery makes it sound like he's singing it from deep inside his soul and thus making me want to understand his emotion. Beautiful track." (8.9) MoD: "Neutral Milk Hotel have rightfully earned its cult classic status, and I think that songs like these one are some of the many reasons why. Although it may come off as a simple song, Jeff Magnum's great songwriting and the catchy yet really fascinating melody mixed with that amazing instrumental really put together a really good thing. And those vocals, which certainly are not the best, really sound genuine, and all this stuff overall make an unique product that's really hard to replicate." (9.0)Lukas: "This is a song in which I have mixed opinions on. The instrumentals are great but aside from that it's not that good. The vocals are okay at best, the production is mid, and there's nothing in the song that makes it that enjoyable." (5.0)Jug: "The first of 2 discoveries (The other being Man Down). I will be the first to admit I didn't get it....at first. I took this song in piece by piece, first by getting adjusted to his unique vocals, then getting lost in the guitar work before finally absorbing the lyrics. The imagery is absolutely beautiful and dark ("Made for his lover who's floating and choking with her hands across her face" may be my new favorite lyric), the song just feels timeless. This could have been released in any decade and it would not have surprised me. Absolutely amazing job." (9.5)Tanooki: (8.9)Matthew lam: "nmh! This is a fantastic song with a wonderful story thag really makes you think. Canβt describe it all here but honestly listen to it if you have not, itβs incredible. I love this album as a whole but this was a standout." (10)TOTAL: 51.3 | AVERAGE: 8.55Which means the bottom two is...{Spoiler} HAMED & NICK PERKINSThis is the second bottom two for the two of you. Nick Perkins, the last time you landed here you got the lowest score and would've been eliminated. Hamed, as the only person with no wins in their pockets you at least have to stay consistent but maybe your consistency has ran out of steam. The person who stays is...{Spoiler} NICK PERKINS! Don McLean - "American Pie" Sambalada: "If I was only allowed to say one word to describe this song, I would say 'bittersweet'. It's one of those rare songs that sonically sound fun and cheerful but when you looked into the lyrics, it's filled with lots of emotions. The fact that McLean can make a catchy pop song without losing the sentimental feels of the lyrics makes me respect him so much. I need to know the full history of these lyrics. In all 8 minutes of it, I was brought to feel so many emotions. Happiness, nostalgia, sorrow, hope. The music and his melody only made the 'timeless' feel more apparent. I can't find a flaw." (9.8) MoD: "While this is definetely an iconic song, and it is obviously a nice listen, I don't think it really goes further than that. The instrumental is pretty good, and so are the lyrics, but I think that the melody, although not being bad, I'll say it becomes obnoxious with a few listens, and the fact that it goes on for so long does not help, because when the song ends I feel absolutely no desire of playing it again." (5.7) Lukas: "While I do think that the length is unnecessary, the song itself isn't that bad. The instrumentals and production are great; the vocals are nice as well; overall, the song is very enjoyable. Not something I'd put on repeat (mainly because of the length lol) but it's a song I'd be willing to listen to once in a while." (8.0) Jug: "Ah yes, many a drunk night went to playing this on Rock Band 3. I absolutely love the instrumentation, its perfection (DAT BASS THO), as are Don's vocals (Seriously theres nothing more satisfying then screaming this in your car). My only issue, and its nitpicking, is certain symbolism in the song that I myself dont get. The story is cohesive up until we get to the character of the Jester, and I never understood what the Jester stood for or his point of being in the story. I understand everything else from the love story unfolding to certain symbols that happened when the plane crash occurred, it was just that I never understood. It's not enough to knock you down too much though, as this is almost pure perfection." (9.3) Tanooki: (8.5) Matthew lam: "ok so I had already fallen in love with this fantastic melody by hearing that kickass weird al phantom menace cover version but you know what, this is almost as good as that no actually itβs even better. That βa long long time agoβ is an iconic opening and always will be. I cannot do this song justice but it is simply well written, an amazing chorus, and a classic. Idk what else to say but i just returned to it and it holds up." (9.5) TOTAL: 50.8 | AVERAGE: 8.47
You know it's a strong round when a classic like "American Pie" land you in the bottom two. Actually, looking at your scores is even more proof that at this point even a good submission doesn't cut it. Congratulations you're still in.
Which means...
{Spoiler} HAMED, I'm sorry but you've been eliminated.
Rihanna - "Man Down" Sambalada: "I'm sorry but this is a choice. Like, you have a freedom to choose any story song and you end up with THIS as your choice? I love this album and I do like the song a bit but I'm disappointed. Rihanna's playing a lot with her vocals but the final product is just okay, not bad but nothing special. The production has a promise to be something great but everything is stacked up against each other and it came up pretty messy. That being said, my 10 years old was bopping to this back in the day so good for you." (5.4) MoD: "Definetely the odd one out here. And that's not good here. Although the song is not "bad" I think it lacks catchiness, or that energy that is characteristic of these type of Rihanna songs. Because although this song is upbeat, I don't feel like she is really inspired here, it's like her on autopilot. Plus, that reggae influenced beat becomes old pretty quickly." (4.0) Lukas: "This is a fun and catchy song with vocals and production that blend well." (9.0) Jug: "As a discovery, I absolutely thought this would be the weakest because I had never thought of Rihanna as a storyteller. I am so glad to be proven wrong on that end. WITH THAT SAID THOUGH, As much as I want to give credit for the amazing production, Rihannas delivery, and just the sheer power of knowing this song came out about a year after the Chris Brown incident, the story does not add up for me. I mean why did she shoot him? Because he was cheating? If so then this was premeditated and she knew what she was doing. Perhaps we go with her when she says she simply lost her cool, well then why would she have the weapon on her if she knew it was gonna be a confrontation?. Its a good song but that's all I can say....good. Not great. No reason for me to revisit." (7.9) Tanooki: (7.7) Matthew lam: (7.5) TOTAL: 41.5 | AVERAGE: 6.92
Like MoD had said in his critiques, this song is the odd one out and it doesn't help you in this case. The sadder thing is you have much much better choices that would've fare far better (and you have revealed them in this thread) than this one so it's a case of bad decision on your part.
