#14 Oso Oso - the view
Chosen By: lyhom Points: 473 SD: 8.576823699 (4th LOWEST)
Thoughts from the Hosts Red: More than any song here, this is the one I wanted to like more. Originally, this was in my bottom ten, but after a re-listen or two, I couldn't justify putting this really nice little song in the bottom ten. Couldn't do it. I hear a REALLY good song in here somewhere, so maybe I'll find it before too long. shazam: i thought this was really solid emo, this is another one that i might have a bit higher depending on more frequent listens

anyways I thought that "the view" would low sd its way into the bottom ten if anything, so I'm glad it got so far
hopefully my other pick makes the top ten but I'm also shocked that it has made it so far and I think some of my other picks could have a chance at being in the top ten in future seeds so

Thoughts from the Hosts Red: I can't help but wonder if one of the reasons I ranked the Hunny song as low as I did is I saw Bleached attached to the song after listening to this, and I wonder if I was a little disappointed that the Hunny song wasn't as good. This hit me in all of the right power pop spots. shazam: this is one that i SHOULD really like, so i'm a bit frustrated at myself that i couldn't get quite as much into it as i thought i would :/ maybe another day, another listen it'll click more

#12 The Garden - AMPM Truck
Chosen By: @chroniclea Points: 497 SD: 10.13081109
Thoughts from the Hosts Red: There's a kinetic energy to this song that I can really appreciate. I probably ranked this too low. shazam: this track was just insane, holy cow. the drumming on here gave me strong Lightning Bolt vibes, this is definitely a group a need to check out more. also, can we talk about how THIS was top 10 for a large chunk of the rankdown?? pulse is evolving, folks

#11 Declan McKenna - The Key To Life On Earth
Chosen By: BlurryKyle Points: 520 SD: 11.17544076
Thoughts from the Hosts Red: Holy crap, this song. This is, without question, the most pleasant surprise I've had in Rock Madness so far. I was not expecting this from Declan McKenna whatsoever. This is, by a significant amount, the best Declan song I've heard, and I'm actually sad that it missed out on the top ten. I was rooting for this REALLY hard. shazam: i pretty much echo everything Red said. where was Declan hiding this? and i say this as a pretty big fan of Brazil. this is definitely the best thing i've heard from him. i was rooting for this so hard :/

let's start off with that extra My Ugly Clementine - WhoThis is really cool. Female Weezer vibes can never disappoint. Sounds like something Alternative would play back when Alternative was proud to call itself Alternative Rock chart. It would have definitely pushed one other song out of my top 20. #20. VR SEX - Maiden China I wanted to like this a whole lot more because it was very fast. There is a killer bassline hidden underneath all that chaos. The vocal styles could and should have been more appealing especially since its Drab Majesty who's songs are usually my favorite first time listens in these RDs. #19. Slow Crush - Pale Skin Shoegaze can be really good , but it can also get testy if its extremely slow. I Couldn't get into this one at all. There was something very 90's U2 about it in the intro, but failed to grip me with the vocals. Yes I know they are female, but they get really drowned out with the music. #18. Elbow - EmpiresAnotherone that failed to real me in. It had 100% to do with the vocals. Just not my style? #17. Sunpaper - AsleepI ended up pushing this one a bit up my list. Has some Shoegaze vibes. The guitar works really gave it that needed boost. #16. 잠비나이 - SawtoothI Love K-Pop and J-Metal, but not much more Asian oriented styles. I couldn't decipher this song and it really felt like a task to get through. I can understand the appeal it has for a more patient listener, I just didn't feel it's vibe. Sorry. BTW what rock genre or music genre does this style fall under? First> Something new I learned today. singingrulebritannia has a sixth sense.. #15. Chromatics - Toydamn! I was hoping this 80's throwback wonder song would make the top 10. I think this one, and my Bleached song are the melodic wonders of the RD. You can hear a lot of Human League in this song. In fact the night I previewed this song was one of those nights when I decided to close the RD and just preview Chromatics songs. This band has my kind of discography. #14. Oso Oso - the viewI wish I could have squeezed this one into my top 20. I probably might have moved it up my ranks if more time was allowed before the deadline. catchy and with a very determined sounding bassline. #13. Bleached - Somebody Dial 911All things considered this could actually be the closest I get to top 10 in one of this Rds so I'm not complaining. I'm just glad it]s with one of my favorite songs of the year. It should by all means have been the single they sent to Alt. I mean how great would this song sound on the radio? It was my actual favorite song for three weeks. It's such a great feeling song and I love that break. Also I don't know why but I feel compelled to play The Romantics "One In A Million" right after listening to this song. I enjoy seeing all those top 10's my song gets too. #12 . The Garden - AMPM TruckMusic wasn't all that bad, but the vocal delivery tuned me off big time. #11. Declan McKenna - The Key To Life On EarthThis is definitely the most interesting song I've listened for this guy. Melodic wonder song #3. Love that synth in the intro and the rest of the instrumentation is right up my alley. Even has a little Strokes going on. One of those songs I'm considering charting as well. A couple of the songs in that top 10 don't surprise me, but I'm really hoping my #2 song takes the win. It's really fricking great!

#28. Muzz - Bad FeelingAnd this is what modern Indiepop morphed into. That's why I stopped charting it. This is late, but today I learnt that the singer for this band is actually John Interpol (i.e. Paul Banks), although the other band members are band members of The Walkmen and Bonny Light Horseman. Interpol are band you like, so I guess... you could say Paul should rejoin his band again. You would probably like these two other songs from Muzz more, as they're less slow.

Sunpaper was a really good discovery. If I made my list now I would've moved it into my top ten along with my #11.
I probably would've moved Pale Skin out of my bottom ten also, but upon first listen I just felt like it was a very generic shoegaze song.

"Mary" and "Strangers" were among my favorite first listens so really cool to see both of them in the top 10. I am disappointed though that "The Key to Life on Earth" missed out. Easily the best thing I've heard from Declan McKenna.

I'm a couple days behind, but I do still want to give my thoughts on every song here
#30: Entertainment - Not too bad, like the groove of this track, instrumental in general is strong. The vocals are just kinda weak and it does come across a little flat, could have some stronger hooks.
#29: Dinner Is Not Over - So I guess quirky post-punk is to this rock madness as Snail Mail-core was to the last one, huh. That's fine, I prefer this over the other. This was...ehhh, like I wanted to like it more than I did. I think it was just a bit too annoying to be really likable.
#28: Bad Feeling - Re-listening to this now, this is a pretty pleasant song. But I can see why both times I listened through this playlist I immediately forgot I had listened to it/didn't even realize I was listening to it. It's a nice tone piece I guess, but it's just kinda dull.
#27: The Great Unknown - The new Enter Shikari record is pretty good, this was one of the standout tracks on it. Do think I prefer Satellites, but still, Enter Shikari are always good.
#26: Bound - I know Lonely the Brave has a new singer now, but this song really hit me more than any of their previous stuff did, though I have always liked the band. The chorus on this one soars
#25: Here's the Thing - Another wonky post-punk pick, but I've actually found myself coming back to this one a lot more than I expected to the first time I heard it. It's just so catchy, good addition to my regular rotation.
#24: You and I - Another one that is perfectly pleasant and fine, just kinda too meandering for me to want to return to. I do kinda like it though, re-listening to it now, I feel bad putting it in my bottom 10.
#23: Creep U - This was one of my favorite discoveries in this seed. I know Fantano is hot on this Black Dresses record, I never really thought to check it out myself though, so glad someone submitted this cause I probably wouldn't have otherwise. Just...too bad they pulled all their stuff off Spotify
#22: Cellular - From what I've heard, I just don't "get" King Krule, idk. I guess I kinda like the instrumental palette on this track, but I don't like the vocals at all and it's just such a slog to listen to. Pretty cool animation in the mv though
#21: Human Enough - I got this in my discover weekly one week and after one listen went and edited into my submission post : p And I'm glad, I did fall in love with this song immediately, one of my very favorites right now, the hooks are so good.
Actually, side bar, *both* my #4 seed submissions were edits. So I'll take this time to link to a couple honorable mentions that *almost* made it
Dig - Oso Oso. Basking in the Glow is a great album, this is my favorite song from it by far. The last chorus is so explosive
You and Me (Forever) - Crooked Teeth. Crooked Teeth's EP from last year is some of the catchiest power pop I've heard in a long time, this song especially is just pure bliss, probably my biggest earworm of 2020.
#20: Maiden China - This is some pretty cool, heavy gothic rock. I dig it. Not really enough to want to come back to, but it's cool.
#19: Pale Skin - This brand of super hazy shoegaze really isn't my thing usually, but I actually really dig this song. It's so eerie sounding, I love the atmosphere on this track. Strong performances too, and even though I do think the vocals are kind of indistinct it kinda works for the tone they're going for. This is one of my favorite discoveries in this seed.
#18: Empires - I usually enjoy Elbow a lot, but they definitely have better songs than this one. Idk, I haven't really loved anything they've released since their 2014 album.
#17: Asleep - This one was kinda the same as Bad Feeling was. It's fine now listening to it, but both times I listened through the playlist it just immediately left my memory, don't really love the guy's vocals either.
#16: Sawtooth - This is definitely the most unique song here, and it kicks my ass. Beautiful track with so many unique instrumentals packed in, great atmosphere, surprisingly hard hitting to be as slow burning as it is. Don't know why I haven't added this to my weekly chart playlist, I love this song more each time I revisit it.
#15: Toy - Ehhh I've enjoyed some Chromatics in the past, but this one didn't really do it for me. Just as nice and atmospheric as I'd expect from them, but didn't leave much of an impact.
#14: The View - As I stated above, I'm a big fan of this Oso Oso album. Another really good track from it.
#13: Somebody Dial 911 - My limited vocabulary really starts to strain itself once I've talked about this many songs uhh. This was a really strong first listen, super catchy little piece of synthpop, have come back to it a lot lately.
#12: AMPM Truck - I think I originally had this a lot higher on my list than I finished with. Track has a ton of energy to it and really strong performances, but the vocals are pretty rough, intentionally or not, it makes this track kind of hard for me to want to come back to regularly.
#11: The Key to Life on Earth - I like this one a lot, I think I like it even more than Beautiful Faces. Declan McKenna's recent musical output continues to surprise me.

#10 Dogleg - Kawasaki Backflip
Chosen By: janinho Points: 535 SD: 8.942142068 (8th LOWEST)
Thoughts from the Hosts Red: I struggled really, really hard with my ranking here. This song is basically up my alley for 2017/2018 Red, though 2020 Red is ever so slightly different and doesn't just immediately gravitate to this song. On a re-listen, I spotted more that I liked. I think that this could wind up being a song I regret ranking outside of my top ten, but I'm not sure yet. shazam: i came back to this one and boosted it a fair bit of spots, this is very very solid emo with a lot of kick. reminded me a lot of bands like Prince Daddy & The Hyena, really good pick

#9 The Slow Readers Club - The Wait
Chosen By: American Idiot Points: 545 SD: 9.744106888
Thoughts from the Hosts Red: Really, more than anything else, I'm just glad that AI got a song in the final, let alone both of his songs, after the first series. (The song is good, too, but that's secondary.) shazam: i wasn't sure what to expect from the band name, but this was clearly my type of song. post-punk with a groove i couldn't help fall for, definitely will come back to this one

#8 The New Pornographers - Falling Down the Stairs of Your Smile
Chosen By: American Idiot Points: 554 SD: 8.18215247 (3rd LOWEST)
Thoughts from the Hosts Red: I imagine there are multiple people who are surprised that this isn't higher. I am one of those people, as I thought this would be top five. Revenge for 2019 AAA, though. shazam: this band is just super consistently solid. this may not be my favorite of theirs (High Ticket Attractions holds that title), but this is still real good

#7 Teenage Wrist - Mary
Chosen By: lyhom Points: 555 SD: 10.92506947
Thoughts from the Hosts Red: I didn't immediately fall hard for this like I did "Stoned, Alone", but it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if I eventually wound up liking it as much as I do that song. Rock solid. shazam: i'm a sucker for this type of grungy shoegaze hybrid, and lyhom's introduced me to plenty of them. this was another hit from that style, stoked to see it make top 10

(although I don't think he's on this song much if at all)
