Yeah, idk why the charts are hella weak right now. Streaming and radio numbers have been pretty low right now. Is it because the music industry is in some sort of transitional state right now?

I also wonder if part of the reason for the abundance of holiday songs at the top of the chart, combined with the general weakness of the chart in recent months (if I remember that correctly) is the utter lack of excitement in music in general. Maybe it's me, and while I've been able to find songs I've liked among the releases over the last half a year, I can't help but feel a near lack of excitement in pop music. Post Malone and Ariana are the biggest names in pop music and they don't seem to generate the sae level of hype and excitement that Rihanna, Adele, Gaga, Katy, etc, did during their peak. An award show with their names as headliners don't seem like such a big deal. Is it because I'm getting older? Am I actually that out of touch? I've never felt so blah toward music and the charts and I can't help but wonder if it's a general sentiment among most others. I've never felt like I don't care as much as I have lately. What concerns me the most is that I'm almost wondering if this is just the new normal. With the stars of yesteryear no longer guaranteed to attain high numbers anymore, and even Ariana doesn't have that pull, it's almost like it's just the next big thing for a few weeks and then we're moving on to something else over and over again. I think you're right, this is a cultural shift that has been going on for a while. the old sense of celebrity is slowly making way for new stars and with the exponential growth streaming saw in the past couple years, music, movies and books people want are readily available on their phones and computers. I feel like pop stars were way bigger back in the day because once you had your breakthrough, it became easier to reach more people, and more people would then start following you. Nowadays you can mute/block out anything you don't want to hear. I haven't heard a single Camila Cabello song since her latest incident, for example, and heard Dance Monkey like twice in Ubers. Katy Perry at her peak was inescapable. Although I can barely remember it, Britney's rise/breakdown/comeback was super relevant culturally. Even Bangerz era Miley and 1989 era Taylor were more in that realm. I feel like Ariana kind of did it with thank u, next the song, but she's nowhere near the relevancy the old school acts reached at their peaks.

It may be age and your priority's are shifting slowly?? I as well haven't been that excited or invested as well. Personally for me even though it may be better for consumers, I think the lack of having to "BUY" music is affecting some. For some reason going out to buy something or even finding it on Itunes that you waited for is different than playing it on youtube.... However I'm 42 now and do I really care as much if artists that I didn't grow up with are busting up the charts??? Personally not really and why did I to begin with? I have looked back on the charts and the music that was big years ago hasn't changed all that much. There was still "Tik Tok" like music out years ago as well. It probably just took longer to get popular. I don't know why but "Come On Ride The Train" is popping in my head. Sorry for the rant but I feel very similar about music and charts now and I think it's an age thing and my favorite artists aren't huge anymore. Look back at songs that were huge 25 years ago and some of them were just as bad as songs that are out now. I didn't think it then but I now know why my mother said my music was crap. lol

I know my younger relatives get excited about Billie Eilish and other newer acts putting out new music. I lost interest in what mainstream radio was playing by my mid-20’s. My interest in following the charts diminished as a result. I don’t care much what’s doing well if I’m not all that interested in what’s popular, which makes sense. There are still a handful of songs at contemporary radio formats or doing well in streaming at a time that I enjoy and root for, but I’m nowhere near as interested in what’s popular as I was in my teens. I’d say that’s pretty much the norm... pop music caters to teens.. by the time you’re 30 the pop music you grew up on will still appeal to you but the newer pop music won’t because it wasn’t made to appeal to your tastes. You’re not the core demographic for the labels anymore. As a music lover, there are still plenty of new releases I get excited for, but most of them are not what’s being marketed to pop radio.

*sighs* Madonna, Whitney, Janet, Celine, and Mariah all on the chart at the same time Oh the 90s Not to mention the beginning of the careers of Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera, and the presence of mega successful girl groups like the Spice Girls, TLC, and Destiny's Child. 😍 It's my personal favorite decade of music, even if I wasn't even born back then. So many great female artists dominating simultaneously, and the male RnB acts like Boyz II Men and Usher were just as incredible.

I think we're currently under a transitional period on the music industry, and things should stabilize themselves once upcoming trends start to appear over the next decade. For instance, I have started to notice that the celebrity profile has changed significantly over the course of the decade. The audience no longer wants larger-than-life and extravagant figures like Lady Gaga and Katy Perry, but down-to-earth, 'relatable' celebrities. The problem is that they only appeal to a specific demographic (teenagers), so the mass appeal isn't as great, which results in the hyped releases freefalling the next week. On the other hand, we have hits solely supported by radio airplay, where the lack of streaming prevents them from reaching better peaks despite their better longevity. At least that's my take on it. Nevertheless, I hope this doesn't become the next big thing (matching with our current generation's incredibly short attention span). There haven't been many big releases this year, and the few we had were harmed by poor single choices or the fact they were simply underwhelming. Hopefully things should get more exciting next decade with many artists making their long-awaited comebacks and newcomers trying to establish new sounds in the mainstream. I remain optimistic. 🤞

Hoping for an all-Christmas top 5 this week. Also, "Last Christmas" and "The Christmas Song" better reach the top 10 - two absolute classics 😍

If you're referring to next week, then they will all be gone, this will be the last week for Christmas songs.

Mariah Carey makes history as the first act to ever get a #1 single in four separate decades. 👑

Super bummed that "Last Christmas" didn't make the cut, but yay for Mariah. This record actually doesn't necessarily mean all that much to me, I mean, Rupert Holmes has a #1 in two decades but only one #1, so. Still, if anyone had to have it, I'm glad it's MC, and who knows, maybe she'll score another #1 in the 2020s - 2019 taught us not to rule anything out.
Also, there is officially no song that peaked at #6 within 2019. Is this the first that's ever happened?

It's safe to say that most people thought Streaming for Christmas songs would be higher. Not even 75 million streams for AIWFCIY... (70 million is still great but you get my point).

Mhhh, I'm not sure Billboard is actually fair to all songs ever released and still being popular, is there still recurrent rule going on and if it is, why are old Christmas songs allowed to chart in a current chart. I think this top 10 right now is pretty confusing - What is hot 100 actually representing, because with this chart structure, we should write off 2-3 weeks of hot 100 in every coming December with these same songs charting. I am excited about Mariah, but Hot 100, recurrent chart and Christmas songs chart should be different things.

Things were very exciting at the start of the decade with the whole electropop domination. Genre-wise, the industry has been trying to find the next big thing for a few years now. I still think it’s just an age/demographic thing. I can’t stand most early 10’s electropop. I thought it was a terrible time for music so I didn’t find it exciting. My peers think the 90’s are the golden age of music.. my parents would disagree and think there was garbage all over the radio in the 90’s. I think the way people consume music now will continue to change the way we view musicians, album eras/releases (especially as the industry reverts back to being more singles oriented), etc. I always use the Michael Jackson example. No one in the past couple of decades has even come close to matching the level of fame he reached in the 80’s, but people consume music very differently now and the industry is far more segmented which gives people more options. By the 90’s, there were far more radio formats to tune into than before (whereas before that you had multiple generations listening to pop radio). Now there is streaming which provides the ability to listen to what you want on-demand and makes music discovery far easier than ever before. People have more options, so it’s difficult for an artist to come out and have mass appeal to various generations and other demographic groups. I’d say Adele came the closest to this in recent years, but she in no way reached an MJ or Beatles level of fame. That’s so difficult to achieve now because if A&R is trying to mold someone into a major pop radio success (or the streaming equivalent), they’re zeroing in on that suburban teen demographic and it becomes difficult to simultaneously appeal to music listeners over 25 as well as urban music listeners (urban music now is rap, so how do you appeal to those listeners as well as the “soccer mom” crowd) rock fans... with more choices there’s less overlap and less potential for mass appeal.

Crazy to think that if Mariah had debuted a year earlier (1989), she could have had a #1 in 5 decades. Of course it’s impossible to know how her career would’ve played out differently.

I love Mariah and am happy for her, I just don't particularly care much about this one record. I guess because I always attribute songs to the years in which they peaked, so this will always be a 2019 #1 for me, even if it goes back to the top. Like how "The Twist" is a 1960 #1 for me, I sorta forget about 62. And how Lionel Richie has #1s in 6 years of the 80s (81-86), but I only attribute "Say You, Say Me" to 85 and stop there. It's just a me thing, not trying to disparage anything.

I love Gaga and Kesha among others but I agree, some of early 10s songs have aged very badly and I think people are never returning to that sound in any form. I heard If I Had You by Adam Lambert at gym and it sounded HI-DE-OUS to be honest.
