#22 - Heart Like A Sad SongWriters: Annie Roboff, Arnie Roman Position in its rankdown: 3/11 Total Points: 233 tim - 1 Troublemaker - 20 taylor - 22 someguy - 34 ccarter1023 - 36 castleoblivion26 - 36 bboat11 - 41 .indulgecountry - 43 Sorry tim! It's a rough set of reveals, as his #3 is followed directly by his #1. "Heart Like A Sad Song" is our #22. It was by far the highest ranking album track in its own rankdown, and is the second highest finisher from Where Your Road Leads Here. This is another one that was hurt from the difference in participants between the rankdowns, as three of its four highest rankers did not participate this time. There were no low rankers for this at all, but the majority of its placements were in the 34-43 range, which was enough to have it exit at this point.

#21 - That Ain't The Way I Heard ItWriter: Jamie O'Hara Position in its rankdown: 9/11 Total Points: 232 someguy - 5 ccarter1023 - 5 Troublemaker - 11 bboat11 - 34 tim - 36 castleoblivion26 - 42 .indulgecountry - 49 taylor - 50 And just like that, the Where Your Road Leads album is eliminated. It takes a back to back hit as, after just losing "Heart Like A Sad Song" at #22, "That Ain't The Way I Heard It" bows out at #21. Just one point separates the songs, as is true of "That Ain't The Way I Heard It" and our #20. It started off as a strong top 5 contender, but slid down as more lists came in, eventually finishing just outside the top 20. It had an interesting time getting here. It ended up just barely making the album tracks rankdown by squeaking ahead of "I Don't Want To Be The One" in its own album rankdown, and ended up becoming the highest ranked song from that album here. Both ccarter1023 and I lose a top 5.

And that takes us to the top 20! All of the songs in the 21-28 range were just one slightly higher rank from making it in, so soon we will see what did make it. I won't be able to come back to this until Monday, where hopefully we will finish this up over the course of Monday-Tuesday and see what song was able to prevail over everything else. someguy ccarter1023 tim bboat11 taylor .indulgecountry Troublemaker castleoblivion26 {Songs Remaining}Tell Me Something I Don't Know When Lonely Calls The Matador Bible And A .44 Lying To The Moon Who Invented The Wheel Pistol Little Hercules I Want To Live Again Nothin’ ‘Bout Memphis Not A Bad Thing Try Me Again Sad Eyes Come Back When It Ain’t Raining Melancholy Blue Love Alone She Can’t Save Him Met Him In A Motel Room You Can’t Trust The Weatherman Your Husband’s Cheating On Us {Recap} 21. Going into the top 40, I feel like I had a bit more passion for the songs before it as there are really only two songs that left before the top 30 that I revisit (those being “Under the Rainbow” and “The Restless Kind”). I could probably add “If I Ain’t Got You” to that list as well, but I actually prefer Marty Stuart’s version to hers. It did end up performing better than I would’ve expected it to though.
“What Gave Me Away” seemed to slightly over-perform here which may be in part to it being a more recent offering. I’m one of the more bigger Garth Brooks fans here on Pulse, but even he couldn’t save this song for me as I just can’t get into it at all and is one of the few tracks from the album that I skip over.
Speaking of skipping over, “For a While” is another one of those tracks as the easy, breezy island vibe just doesn’t work for me when delivered from Trisha.
I would’ve thought that “Seven Year Ache” would be a top 20 contender, especially given how well it performed in its album rankdown. It makes sense though if its highest rankers from the album rankdown didn’t participate here. I’m probably one of the few from that group that ranked this high as the original by Rosanne Cash is already one of my all-time favorite songs.
It would’ve been great to get at least one song from Thinkin’ About You into the top 20 as “Those Words We Said” stood the best chance for sure. Kim Richey is such a unique songwriter and this is one of the best showcases of her style I think. As much as I adore “On a Bus to St. Cloud”, I never thought it was a good single choice as I think this would’ve fared better at radio.
Usually when I go into a rankdown such as these I have a pretty good starting point with what I would initially consider my #1 song to be, but other than “Those Words We Said” I really had no idea and just more or less let the preference revealer do its work. I made quite a few edits before my final submission, and with each one “Heart Like a Sad Song” kept popping up at the top of my list. That shouldn’t have been all that surprising to me because I am such a sucker for Trisha’s piano-laden ballads. The addition of the fiddle to this just makes the song all that more great to my hears as it literally sends chills down my spine. This just goes to show you how we connect differently with songs as we age because this never stood out to me all that much when I first heard it back in 1998.

That was a ROUGH series of reveals! 4 of my top 10 are gone. I'm sorry Trisha!

Seven Year Ache reminds me of all the reasons I’m not passionate about covers. She sounds amazing though but it just doesn't reach the heights of the original.

1. What do you think will miss the top 15? Out of the remaining songs the 5 I hope that will go out in the 16-20 slots are: Lying To The Moon, Who Invented The Wheel, Nothin Bout Memphis, Little Hercules, & When Lonely Calls 2. Any major surprises so far? I'm surprised at the lackluster response of "To Make You Feel My Love" - a simple yet such a beautiful song imo. 3. Any major disappointments so far? Probably my #2, "Too Bad You're No Good", going out so early. A rocking tune with Emmylou on harmony vocals - what could be better? Lol. 4. When will that ranking of taylor's come into play? I have absolutely no idea but I'll admit it's scaring me.

1. What do you think will miss the top 15? "Little Hercules", "I Want To Live Again", "Try Me Again", "Love Alone", and "Your Husband's Cheating On Us".
2. Any major surprises so far? No, not really. The Extras tracks are performing better than normal here, but I don't really think that's surprising based on their quality and the fact that they came mostly from one of her albums rather than feeling random.
3. Any major disappointments so far? Not really any huge disappointments, although I would have definitely preferred to see "Gimme The Good Stuff" make the top 20... That is easily one of my favorite discoveries of this entire series!
4. When will that ranking of taylor's come into play? I think that "Nothin' 'Bout Memphis" will still make it to #8 or so!

#20 - Little HerculesWriter: Craig Carothers Position in its rankdown: 3/10 Total Points: 231 someguy - 3 castleoblivion26 - 9 tim - 10 taylor - 15 ccarter1023 - 37 .indulgecountry - 38 bboat11 - 56 Troublemaker - 63 We kick off the top 20 with "Little Hercules" from Everybody Knows. It was the highest ranked album track in its rankdown, and here, it is the second-highest ranked. The song did well for most of the submission process, and takes out some big placements with it, including my #3, castleoblivion26's #9 and tim's #10. On the other hand, Troublemaker loses another bottom 10.

#19 - Love AloneWriters: Dan Colehour, David Grissom Position in its rankdown: 7/12 Total Points: 227 bboat11 - 9 taylor - 13 .indulgecountry - 13 ccarter1023 - 15 someguy - 28 castleoblivion26 - 40 tim - 42 Troublemaker - 67 At #19 we lose "Love Alone", from Inside Out. The song finished in 7th in its original rankdown, and fared much better here, relatively speaking. It was the second most popular song from its album here, behind only "Melancholy Blue". With this loss, bboat11 loses a top 10, while Troublemaker loses a bottom 5.

#18 - Try Me AgainWriters: Andrew Gold, Linda Ronstadt Position in its rankdown: 3/12 Total Points: 226 ccarter1023 - 1 .indulgecountry - 12 castleoblivion26 - 19 tim - 22 Troublemaker - 31 bboat11 - 44 someguy - 45 taylor - 52 Finishing one point ahead of "Love Alone" is "Try Me Again", which comes in at #18. The Real Live Woman track was the highest finishing album track in its original rankdown but, like so many top-finishing album tracks here, it exits before two of the songs that it previously beat, "Sad Eyes" and "Come Back When It Ain't Raining". The Linda Ronstadt cover was ccarter1023's #1 song here.

#17 - Your Husband's Cheating On UsWriters: Matraca Berg, Marshall Chapman, Jill McCorkle Position in its rankdown: 10/52 Total Points: 222 someguy - 4 ccarter1023 - 18 castleoblivion26 - 23 bboat11 - 24 .indulgecountry - 31 Troublemaker - 32 taylor - 44 tim - 46 Leaving at #17 is "Your Husband's Cheating On Us", one of the new songs from the Prizefighter album, and featured in our extras rankdown. I absolutely love this song, and was disappointed when it was never released as a single. No low ranks are lost here, and I lose my #4. The song did have four ranks in the 31-46 range, which meant that this was about as far as it was going to go. On another note, bboat11 has now predicted the first four songs to leave in the top 20 correctly. Will he go 5/5 and see "I Want To Live Again" out next?

#16 - Not A Bad ThingWriters: Dave Berg, Deanna Bryant, Sunny Russ Position in its rankdown: 7/13 Total Points: 218 .indulgecountry - 5 bboat11 - 7 someguy - 16 Troublemaker - 18 ccarter1023 - 19 castleoblivion26 - 48 tim - 51 taylor - 54 Leaving at #16 is "Not A Bad Thing", from 2007's Heaven, Heartache And The Power Of Love. With this loss, the album is now down to just one track left. This was quite popular here, placing in 5 people's top 20s, including a top 5 from .indulgecountry, and a top 10 from bboat11. On the other hand, its next highest ranking after ccarter1023's #19 was castleoblivion26's #48, which meant that the three bottom half ranks held it down enough that it never seriously contended for much higher than this. It did tie with our #15 in points, but lost the tiebreaker due to #15 being someone's #2!

"Your Husband's Cheating On Us" has such a riveting lyric. I figured it was on borrowed time because the melody is a bit subdued, but this absolutely deserved this top 20 placement, as did all the other Extras songs that are still remaining! "Little Hercules" is one that I would have gladly swapped out of this top 20 for almost anything that exited in the 21-30 range... Idk why, but something about it is just kind boring to me. "Love Alone" is just soooooo good! I enjoyed the Inside Out album a lot though, and would easily rank it in my top 3 albums of her career. I think I have been the highest ranker for every song from that album "Try Me Again" is pretty good! I remember being shocked how solid the Real Live Woman album was considering that it is pretty much the big flop of her career. Most of the album tracks from it did pretty well on my list too!

#15 - Who Invented The WheelWriters: Anthony Smith, Bobby Terry, Craig Wiseman Position in its rankdown: 2/11 Total Points: 218 .indulgecountry - 2 castleoblivion26 - 6 Troublemaker - 19 tim - 19 bboat11 - 21 taylor - 41 ccarter1023 - 54 someguy - 56 "Who Invented The Wheel" is the winner of our tie with "Not A Bad Thing", and finishes in the top 15. Unfortunately for .indulgecountry, his #2 song exits with this reveal. The song finished at #2 in its own album rankdown, and is the second highest finisher from Jasper County here. The song was scheduled to be the third single in the summer of 2006, but had its adds date pulled at the last minute. In this rankdown, it was always playing catch up, due to its two lowest rankings being the first two lists received. In .indulgecountry's #2 ranking, castleoblivion26 also loses a #6.

"Not A Bad Thing" is just such a great song! I am personally partial to Terri Clark's original, because I LOVE the baritone guitar arrangement that gives it a really confident presence, and her whole vibe around Pain To Kill is definitely my favorite phase of her career. However, there is no denying that Trisha brings a different feeling to the song, especially when the song suddenly switches to double-time in the chorus. Either way, it is a damn good song, and I love both of them, and would have loved to have seen it make the top 10 in this rankdown.

"Who Invented The Wheel" was unlistenable to me the first time I heard it as a kid. It sure has grown on me a lot since then though! I just used to find that melody to be sooooooooo grating when she went higher and higher at the end fo the chorus... But now I can definitely see how this one is a jam! I'm honestly a little surprised to see it miss the top 10.

#14 - Lying To The MoonWriters: Matraca Berg, Ronnie Samoset Position in its rankdown: 2/10 Total Points: 214 castleoblivion26 - 3 Troublemaker - 7 taylor - 9 tim - 16 .indulgecountry - 28 bboat11 - 43 someguy - 52 ccarter1023 - 56 "Lying To The Moon" came in second to the title track in its album rankdown, and was the last song standing from The Song Remembers When by a lot here. It was initially on track to place much lower, but three of the last four people to submit placed it in their 10, which allowed it to shoot up our rankdown list at the very end.
