The riff in reptile is so perfect along with the method of speaking up to the "like a real... REEEPTILE" which is what makes the song an earworm.

it's BEDS ARE BURNING vs UNDER THE MILKY WAY
one of these is 4th lowest & the other the VERY lowest standard deviation...two more #1 rankings remain...22 of the 30 rankings are Top 10s...and the lowest rank left is a #41
who's going to come out on top? Peter Garrett or Steve Kilby?

5. Chains of love (7): this was their first hit back home, and a personal top 10. It’d have a second run of popularity after Erasure became one of the most popular acts in 1990-91 with songs like Blue savannah, stop, oh l’amour (live), gimme gimme gimme reaching the top of the charts. The extended version received lots of airplay around that time. I became a big fan also in 1990. They’d manage to have over ten personal chart toppers. youtu.be/p8mpvEPTOe04. Suedehead (3): a song I discovered when buying Bona Drag in the late 90s. Love at first listen. One of my favorite M songs, although I may prefer Everyday and November better. In any case, this and other songs off Bona Drag are key parts of my life soundtrack at a time when I was getting comfortable with who I was. 3. Reptile (26): I only discovered this song a few months ago thanks to a pulse RD :) so I think I need to warm more to it. It’s good. It just hadn’t entirely connected with me, especially considering so many good songs in this list...

Both are deserving winners tbh. Although different reasons. BAB was a big hit back home. UTMW was a minor, semi obscure song that managed to get some airplay. Both are great in their lanes. I have a clear favorite, but good with either

Excellent final however it would have ended up... two stone cold classics that have stood the test of time.

"Under the Milky Way" is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard, mainly for its atmosphere and dreaminess. A true work of art.
I would've been fine with either Church song winning - both are 5/5s for me - but I ended up putting at #1 the one I thought would do worse (considering the participants). I'll definitely take the PPP at #1 though.

OK guys, rankdowns are fun, but a bit exhausting for the host. I enjoyed sharing these memories with you! I hope you made some great discoveries along the way. Thanks for participating & following along & thanks again for your patience as I had forgotten that I never finished this. ...now it's time to work on the 1988 ACTIVE (Mainstream) Rock Rankdown...we need more submitters in that & the deadline is fast approaching

#5: "Chains Of Love" - Erasure Funny how this was a hit late '86 in Europe, cuz that is where I first heard it. I even have the European '45 of the song. Europeans 45's always had cover art as oppoesed to U.S. which was 50% cover art and 50% just a white sleeve with a hole in the middle. If you don't get mesmerized by that intro than Andy vocals are not for you. The rest of the song is Synthpop perfection just like my rank. #4: "Suedehead" - Morrissey Wonderful melody. Very heavenly. Another example of the sound Spanish Rock was developing into in the late 80's. Morrissey was well known in Spanish Rock circles. Listen to this classic jam from Mike Erentxum. Obviously inspired by the Morrissey hits. Esta Luz Nunca Se Apagara (There Is A Light That Never Goes www.youtube.com/watch?v=e8EscNURoNc#3: "Reptile" - The Church I always preferred this one to the slower ones, but I didn't always know this song til much much later. What I love about it is that it always strikes me as a first time listen. A great first time listen that I'm going to upgrade in the rank downs. #2: "Beds Are Burning" - Midnight Oil Not my favorite Midnight Oil song, but in my top 3 favorite Midnight Oil songs. I really thought this was gonna win once I saw the remaining ten. #1. "Under The Milky Way" - The Church Would have preffered any of the other four, but it's a still a very nice song. BTW these F U C K s 's ( )'s used to plague my weekly top 50 chart every week until Daryl the Beryl showed me how to get rid of them. Butterflies & Hurricanes Great Rank down. Great job. The best part is you actually forgetting that you left this RD unfinished BTW you also haven't posted you weekly personal music chart in a few weeks. just in case you forgot.

2. Beds are Burning (4): This made a dent in pop radios in 88, but became an even bigger hit couple years later, at a time when one of our pop stations was reviving minor hits of the past (from Love hurts to A little respect to BAB). From then on, this song would become a staple in any radio playing 80s pop rock music. Personally, I only liked it in ‘88 -had some reticence to his vocals- but in ‘90 I caved in. Great production, with good use of interesting instruments, good melody and an earworm of a chorus with nice harmonies. A classic! (Although my favorite MO song is Blue sky mine). 1. Under the Milky Way (2): YAYAYYYYY!!!! I had this as my #1 for most of the time, but in the end I gave an extra bonus point to INXS. I absolutely LOVE this song. It was a random minor hit in our #1 pop station, and made it to my top 15. In the 90s I came back to this song -and never left it. For three decades this song has made me stop in my tracks and daydream, just enjoy and breathe music and let it take me somewhere else. The instruments, keys, melody, vocals, the song structure all work tremendously and turn it into one of my favorite moody /rock / sophistipop-like songs ever. This has also been one of my go-to songs for key moments in life. Songs like this, Ballerina out of control, Bravado, Everyday is like Sunday, Don’t look back in anger, are amongst songs that have joined me in key moments in life. Great deserving winner! Btw, Doc Indie Party Rock, that Mikel Erentxun song was indeed a cover of a Smiths song :) but you’re totally right, Mikel and his previous band Duncan Dhu had lots of Morrissey/ Smiths influence: youtu.be/C1vW8yyf6mc

Red won't like me saying this but Beds Are Burning is easily the weakest link in this top 5 Well, you probably wouldn't have wanted to hear that "Reptile" was the weak link for me in the top five. (Well, actually, "Chains of Love" probably was the weak link, but it wouldn't have had the same ring to it.) The top two is great, so the result doesn't really matter (and I certainly would not have been the difference in pushing one of my 100 favorite songs ever to #1, given that I'm fairly positive that "Under the Milky Way" would have been in my top five), but geez, what did you guys (and, by "you guys", I mean "Doc") do to "Where Is My Mind?"
