I'm going to try to work on this over the next two days, but I've really felt burnt out lately, rankdowns or otherwise, and I've been needing to take a bit of a break from Pulse. This is basically my way of saying that, while I am going to work on this, it's going to be somewhat touch and go.

Thanks! I’ve been listening to the Spotify list for the past couple of days, but I’ll need the weekend to work on it. I thought of doing this last weekend, but after 3 weeks of stay-at-home on Saturday I had a video happy hour with some wine, and then I spent hours on the Smule app and on Sunday I Smuled again. Was a good stress-relief mechanism

you won't run out of extras before the new extension date will you?
Lover's Jamboree - Nick Lowe: I honestly only ever liked "Cruel To Be Kind". At least that's the only one I have in my MP3 archives. This one isn't too terrible. I guess it falls in the Pubrock category? I'm not too fond of pubrock.
Lucretia My Reflection - Sisters Of Mercy: I didn't recall this one, and it really doesn't amount too much, but I still dig it for the vocals and bad ass bassline.
Mind At The End Of The Tether - Tackhead: This is one of compilation of noize with some spoken words songs that I don't find much use for. Maybe good for background noize in some underground music club, but I really wouldn't know because I never did much clubbing.
Mountain Song - Jane's Addiction: This music was never meant for me. Still isn't. I liked this guy's music when they turned into Porno For Pyros.
Mr Jones - Talking Heads I'm glad this was not a Counting Crows cover or vice versa. This is nowhere as cool as the "pizza hut" jamboree we are ranking, but this is still kinda groovy. Does anyone know who Mr. Jones refers to? There are countless of songs and movies featuring the Mr. Jones character. Sometimes its Mrs. or Miss Jones too.

you won't run out of extras before the new extension date will you? HA!!! i have a near endless stream of extras...more than i realized actually...which brings me to a dilemma... *** POTENTIAL HICCUP *** About a dozen additional issues of The Hard Report from 1988 have been uploaded to American Radio History (where i did the majority of my research for this pre-Billboard chart data). After absorbing the Alternative Tracks charts from these newly discovered issues into my existing research & crunching the data, I now know of higher peaks for some songs, meaning the actual Top 100 songs of the year is now different. There were (at least) 104 songs that made the Top10 (so at least 4 will not make the cut) Here are the songs that are not currently in our list of 100 songs (but now we know should be) along with their newly known peak: - Dumb Things - Paul Kelly (#4)
- All I Wanted - In Tua Nua (#4)
- Better Be Home Soon - Crowded House (#5)
- Anchorage - Michelle Shocked (#5)
not sure how people will be able to listen to this song - Freddie's Dead - Fishbone (#6)
- My Bag - Lloyd Cole (#7)
- Turning The Tide - Richard Thompson (#7)
- Cellophane - That Petrol Emotion (#8)
- Waiting For The Great Leap Forward -Billy Bragg (#8)
- Slow Turning - John Hiatt (#8)
- Liar Liar - Debbie Harry (#9)
- Every Dog Has Its Day - Let's Active (#9)
Several of you have already submitted your lists, so i'm hesitant about asking you to revise them now. Which is why I thought it best to have an open discussion on how to proceed. Please let me know how you think we should move forward.

Just keep the list you've already posted, asking several people to revise their lists is too much of a hassle imo

Yeah I think revising the lists of a bit much but I'll go listen to them anyway, along with all the extras (if I have time)

if anyone can find a way to listen to "Anchorage" or anything by Michelle Shocked (other than the 2 crappy songs on Spotify), please let us know - i mean, i have a handful of mp3s, so i can listen, but some in the younger generation may not even know what mp3s are let alone have them, LOL

yeah I kinda agree about revising the whole list. Kinda a big task. But please do tell which songs fell out of the original list? That would be interesting to know.

That would be interesting to know. a decision has been made: the list WILL NOT be changing...please rank the initial 100 songs posted in the original post the songs that got lucky were: I'm Sorry - Hothouse Flowers (#12 B) Globe Of Frogs - Robyn Hitchcock (#12 C) Pleasure - Railway Children (#11 C) Help Save The Youth Of American - Billy Bragg (#11 C) strangely enough he'd have been replaced by another of his songsAnother Kind Of Love - Hugh Cornwell (#11 B) King Of Emotion - Big Country (#11 B) Don't Let's Start - They Might Be Giants (#11 C) ouch! I Want Your Hands On Me - Sinead O'Connor (#11 C) ouch! & then 4 of the songs peaking at #10...using my discretion, i would've axed: Other 99 - Big Audio Dynamite (#10 C) Paradise - Meat Puppets (#10 C) When The End Comes - Rave-Ups (#10 C) Heaven Knows - Robert Plant (#10 C) the 12 songs that got the shaft (listed in a previous post) will be featured as highlighted Extras throughout the reveals so they can (almost) get the respect they deserve

Glad that Railway Childre, Big Country and TMBG all made the cut. Completely forgot Don't Let's Start and its quirkiness. That said, I would've liked to see Better Be Home Soon (Crowded House) and Liar Liar (Debbie Harry) make the cut. Completely forgot the awesome Reptile and the incredible guitar riff. It is rare that I absolutely hate remakes of songs that I love, but the Swans really sucked it up on their Love Will Tear Us Apart remake. I want those 3 minutes and 40 seconds back.

extras:
My Bag - Lloyd Cole: This one sounded familiar? Maybe I caught it on KROQ(back when KROQ was cool). Either way I liked it a lot. The vocals flowed really nicely with the melody which was driven by a boppy bassline. Emphasis on the bassline which is really what holds the songs together at the seams. My Obsession - Icehouse: This one didn't have the same impact as "Electric Blue" had on me, but it was still a well put together composition. The pianos were a nice addition.
Never Can Say Goodbye - Communards It's great to get the H- NRG side of music on Modern Rock radio. I remember KROQ played more NRG geared songs from Dead Or Alive , Magazine 60, and Ken Heaven. This was one of my favorite songs of the year and would have made my top 20 if we ranked it. So much NRG in that song and video.
Never Tear Us Apart - INXS This is a great song. One of my favorites off that album. INXS really capitalized on that synth line. It seems not only Alt , but Mainstream wasn't big on the power ballads either. Unless you were Warrant. All their ballads made the top 100 on mainstream.
New Sensation - INXS This was another great one. For some reason it also missed KROQ and 91X yearly lists, and still somehow I remember it on the radio all the time. Or maybe it was MTV? Either way it's such a banger.
Extra batch #2.
Pop Goes The World - Men Without Hats: This was as bubbly and silly as they come, and still I charted it for a few weeks. Presence Of Love - Alarm: This seemed like a different route for the band. Sounded more Icehouse than Alarm, but it still wasn't half bad. With a chorus like that it makes you wonder why it didn't slay on Pop?
Pretty Boys & Pretty Girls - Book Of Love Here is another one I knew from the Hi-NRG dance charts. Not only "Tubular Bells" but also Company B. "Fascinated". A catchy synth line ,and perfect Galloping bass line was always essential for a good Hi-NRG tune. The singing style was also Hi-NRG tones like Tapps, Tyrants In Therapy. For example "Too Tuff To Cry"
Prison Bound - Social Distortion What I found alluring was the melody of this song. I love how Social Distortion would take a Punk rock melody and spruce it up with some pop goodness. Also this is like Social Distortion song part 16 and still sounds great.
Reach - Martini Ranch Yup I always used to say there is the guy from Terminator. The song was vocally silly, but it also reminded me of Pseudo Echo's "Funky Town", so I liked it musically. This song is more Hi-NRG then you realize.

* 10:00 p.m. Sunday night. let's checkout some first time listens.
Rescue Me - Alarm: This sounded way better than the other Alarm song, and a bit familiar too. It sounds less Icehouse ,and more big Alternative Rock Arena sound. It really pumps out the NRG.
Risky - Ryuichi Sakamoto (featuring Iggy Pop): This is a first time ever listen. Funny thing is the vocals I really don't usually like from Iggy actually gave this a cool laid back Bowie vibe.
River - Throwing Muses: Sounds like they were still searching for a more radio friendly pop sound. This definitely was not it. Even after that first ear wrenching minute it was still melodically challenged.
Shake For The Shiek - Escape Club I might have liked this more with Billy idol on vocals. Out of respect, and for borrowing his hit song "Flesh For Fantasy" they should have let him do vocals. I will say that this is better than the one we actually ranked from this band.
Shark Walk - Shriekback The stoopidity level this song achieves is incredible. Both this and "King Of Rock 'N' Roll" are pretty hokey in the lyrics. The difference is Prefab Sprout bring on the perfect melody, and vocals while this"Shark Walk" is a complete musical and vocal wreck.
second set:
She's Got A New Spell - Billy Bragg: The salvage able part are his vocals. I love accents. The music however is a differnt story. A little toooooo "Wilderness" for me.
She's No Lady - Lyle Lovett Not a fan of this Las Vegas night club variety music. Come to think of it not a fan of Julia Roberts either. Eric Roberts tho he is awesome.
Sign Your Name - Terence Trent D'Arby ...and a third song I never liked. Not a first time listen, but it might as well be because I have steered clear from it for many years.
Simply Irresistible - Robert Palmer: Hell yes! I love this one. wait a minute. If this wasn't a hit on Modern Rock what about "Addicted To Love"? We better get to rank that one. Anyway ,this jam missing the top 100 on Modern Rock is like Winger "Seventeen" missing the top 100 of Mainstream Rock. Simply appalling.
Situations - Cetu Javu This one sounded good. Got that Depeche Mode vibe. I'll take blatant ripoffs any day so long as they sound like music I actually want to listen to.

extra extra read all about 'em. Slow Turning - John Hiatt: The music had some Tom Petty vibes, the vocals didn't do much for me. Sounded like an old Huey Lewis, and I mean Huey at 90 cuz he still sounds great at 70. So Important - Sparks:Sparks is a band I have always enjoyed. Big New Wave innovators just like Devo. I wasn't too familiar with this song, but it sounded good. They sound a bit more like the Fixx here, but that isn't a bad thing. I still would have easily squeezed this one into my top 50. I feel this is where Wham would be if George hadn't broken away from Andrew, THis band even dresses like 80's "Bad Boys" Wham. Soldier's Requiem - Naked Raygun This had some Punk rock vibes. I never heard of them either, but I like me some Punk rock now and then. Cool band name too. Somewhere In My Heart - Aztec Camera:Some lovely Sophistipop from Aztec Camera. "Oblivious" was the only song I knew from them, but I would have charted this one back in the day. Stigmata - MinistryI can't believe this is the same band who did "Revenge" and "Work For Love" This band really took a wrong turn musically. I don't know where, but it seems they forgot how to sing and properly play their instruments. Not a fan of this noize, but you already know that. More extras:Stop This Car - Woodentops:Oweee! what is this awesomeness? This is fast. I love the idea that its played so fast and the song is titled "Stop this Car". Like slow down so I can get out. Of course I stayed for the whole ride. Surfin USA - Jesus & Mary ChainDidn't think I would dig this at all, but I kinda did. I like the fact that it sounds live too. The raw guitars sound really is the magic here. Suspicion - Gene Loves Jezebeland of course one of my favorite unsung modern Rock bands of the 80's. This band reminds me of the Mexican rock band Fobia. Something about the vocals, bass lines and melodies. They had that psychedelic side that is hard to resist. Take My Heart Away - Johnny Clegg & SavukaFirst time listen. Are u sure this is 1988. Sounds like todays EDM cut & paste drivel. South Africa? Is this were today's pop sound is born from? I didn't like this song one bit. Talk About Love - O PositiveLittle bit of Gothic post punk. This was alright. Those vocals didn't fit the song.

Young Manhood - Wild Swans:

BALLOT UPDATE:
Our top 3 songs have not changed at all, but they are very close (only 26 pts between them). Songs 9 & 10 from the last update have fallen from the elite realm while songs 14 & 15 have moved up to take their places. Our top 8 look secure with all of them surpassing 700 pts. But below that everything is very very close as the top 21 songs have all amassed over 600 pts each.
On the low end, our bottom 3 songs have also not changed at all, & again they could easily as they are all within 19 pts of each other. Of the bottom 10, only our #91 has reached 200 pts & then only barely at EXACTLY 200. Good news for our former #91 as it vaults way up out of the bottom 20 (that should indicate how close these songs are). But sadly for our former 89, it slid down to occupy the open slot in the bottom 10.
Standard Deviations you ask? The lowest three are currently at #2, #5 & #100 (the very lowest - nobody likes it). The highest deviations are at #9, #27 (highest) & #31.
We have ties at 25, 44, 51, 57, 68 & 79
There is another 80's rankdown that is due today, so...i think it's wise to push the deadline for this one out a bit...technically this is due TONIGHT, but i'm going to issue an extension to allow a few more days so we can get the count up to a minimum of 12 15 lists
Your list could make a HUGE impact considering how close most of these songs are to each other.

since we have a few more days before the submission window closes, let's start taking a closer look at some of the songs that should've been included (& would've if i'd been able to see the charts for certain weeks earlier):
"Every Dog Has Its Day" - Let's Active
Led by Mitch Easter (who produced the early REM albums), Let's Active hail from Winston-Salem, NC. Their career spanned 1981-1990. They had success on college radio with tracks from their 1984 Cypress album (we'll see some of those songs once we get to ModernRock 1984). But this is the only song that ever showed up on an "official" chart, making it to #17 on Billboard. Although the reason it is featured here is that it climbed as high as #9 on the Hard Report. It is the title track to the album of the same name.

one batch for tonight. There Is No Love Between Us Anymore - Pop Will Eat Itself:I really enjoyed the vocalist's tones. Sadly enough the rest of the song just sounded like the song's preview with a bunch of other noize that i wasn't too fond of. Things You Said - Depeche Mode:There was a certain threshold where Depeche Mode was becoming a bit too darkwave, and were somehow losing the melody. I know I heard this before ,but it obviously never left any impact on me to remember when? Thousands Are Sailing - Pogues:Tonight's extras are doing little to entice me.This almost sounding like Social Distortion with banjos. Not a good combo. Touched By The Hand Of God - New Order:Way better as far as music is concerned but this isn't one of my preferred New Order songs, and by that I mean I gave it a modest #36 peak. I always loved that hint of "Reap The Wild Wind" from Ultravox in that intro. listen. "I Was Touched (Reap The Wild Wind (melody)) by the hand of God" I know you hear it too. It would still make my top 40 and I love the MV's Glam Metal mock look. Troy - Sinead O'ConnorI'm glad we didn't have to rank this snoozfest. I was extremely kind to her songs on this RD minus that awful M.C. Lyte bull which I didn't pay no mind to and ranked the edit instead. second batch for tomorrow night: Tubular Bells - Book Of Love:Yes!!!! More Hi- NRG. This song had that Exorcist melody in mind. Also again with Company B. and other Hi- Energy , Italo Disco melodies of the mid 80's. This is the prefect type of dance music next to 80's hair metal of course. Turning Of The Tide - Richard Thompson:First time listen. The Elvis tones went a little too far, but it also gave the song a small melodic flame. This could have been the Stray Cats going thru a transition. I like it. Twanky Party - Cabaret Voltaire:I swear I read Twerky party. I hate that twerking so much. It almost looks like the chicks are squatting to take a dump. Not sexy. Obviously I hated this song. It sounds like one of those songs you would hear in a S&M nightclub. I hate those places. Also not sexy. Underneath The Radar - Underworld"Underneath The Radar" is a fitting title for this song. I never heard of it or the band. I didn't hate tho. I actually found it quite 1981. Untapped New Wave style of 1981. Very cool.... and my favorite of tonight's EXTRAS. Waiting For The Flood - Love & RocketsThis band again. Another one that never quite enticed me. Also why did this sound like a Hair Metal Powerballad. It has Poison and Guns N' Roses all over it. Funny enuff the best song I heard from this band yet. The brass gave it the Bowie vibe which gave it Modern Rock vibes. Definitely the best ever from Love & Rockets. checking out that brand new would be top 100 song. "Every Dog Has Its Day" - Let's ActiveFirst I love this title. There is a Eurobeat song from Stop Limit Line with this same title. So this song has a more guitar oriented modern rock style. Very melodic and catchy. It sounded more like Cheap Trick Powerpop which is why it would have been a pretty high first listen. I wasn't too thrilled with the original top 100 of 1988 so I easily rank this in my top 30. True strory.
