since we have a few more days before the submission window closes, let's start taking a closer look at some of the songs that should've been included (& would've if i'd been able to see the charts for certain weeks earlier):

"Liar Liar" - Debbie Harry



This song was included on the Married To The Mob Motion Picture Soundtrack. The Blondie frontwoman had two previous solo albums & appearences on 2 previous soundtracks resulting in seven hit singles, but most of that charting action was either on the dance charts or in other countries. "Liar Liar" climbed up to #15 on Billboard, but all the way up to #9 on The Hard Report. On a personal note, I would have loved to have ranked this one high on my list.

"Cellophane" - That Petrol Emotion



Upon the breakup of The Undertones, brothers John & Damian O'Neill joined forces with Seattle vocalist Steve Mack & other musicians from Derry, Northern Ireland to from TPE. They made a splash with their 2nd album on the British charts, scoring 3 hits that era. This single is from their 3rd album End of the Millennium Psychosis Blues. It only managed to peak at #98 on the UK charts, but it reached all the way to #8 on The Hard Report Alternative Tracks chart.

I remember That Petrol Emotion... Big Decision was the song I remember. It was played it in the Euro Parade back in 1987 I think.

BALLOT UPDATE:

We have some big shakeups in our Top 10. Our top 3 songs are still the top 3, but the former #1 has slipped down a few spots allowing the other two songs to pass it. The former #12 has muscled it's way up into the promised land, but amazingly so has the former #25! Which songs fell out? That would be the former #6 and also the former #9 (which PLUMMETS all the way out of the Top 30!) The top seven songs have all surpassed the 1,000 point mark while 8-14 are all over 900 & in striking distance.

On the low end, our poor #100 song does not change & is a whopping 73 points behind #99. The former #s 91 & 93 escape the bottom 10, replaced by the former 82 & 85. Our bottom six songs have not yet reached 300 points (& #100 is below 200 points).

Standard Deviations you ask? The lowest three are currently at #1 (the very lowest), #5 & #100. The highest deviations are at #18, #36 (highest) & #68.



We have ties at 68, 73 & 87



REMEMBER: If you haven't submitted yet, your list could make a HUGE impact considering how close most of these songs are to each other. If you are able, I'd love for you to send in a list, even if we have to wait a bit longer. I want to kick-off the pre-Billboard era in style!

laptop speakers are shit. They make rock music and guitars in general sound like shit.  You can't even get the full pleasure sound of the music with laptop speakers.  The first thing I did was buy some Aktek speakers .the ones with the woofer. Downloaded a fierce equalizer and bam! I get a full on stereo sound from my laptop. Even Youtube sounds great. It makes doing these Rank Downs a whole lot more fun. It might even cause you to rank some Rock songs even higher. ;)

There were LOTS of new songs here, and songs I hadn’t heard in eons (like John Astley’s). Good discoveries and rediscoveries. There was no Driven Out this time around -huge discovery making the top 5- but my top 20 included a good bunch of new or rediscoveries that replaced more familiar songs —and I like it when that happened!
Very interested in the results, as this lis is quite eclectic.

"Waiting For The Great Leap Forwards" - Billy Bragg



Billy Bragg comes from Essex UK. He was influenced by both folk and punk & his lyrics were often echoing his leftist political leanings. He had 4 hits on the UK chart prior to '88, but this song reaching #20 on Billboard was his 1st appearance on a US chart. But the song had peaked all the way up at #9 on The Hard Report prior to Billboard's Modern Rock Chart debut. This is the song of his we should've ranked instead of the one we did as this had the higher peak (& besides, it's the better of the two)

the song at #100 has the THIRD-lowest standard deviation, EIGHT bottom 10s & is only one of two songs not to have a single top-half ranking...nobody likes this, but then amazingly, nobody ranked it at #100 either

I suspect that there may have been a mistake on the charting of this song. First of all, THIS song made it to #2 on the Alt chart? seems odd, don'tchya think? second, Go Bang! is also the album title, & finally, the band made a video & had an official single release that year for their cover of "Get Down Tonight". Were stations playing that song & reporting this one? or reporting the full album? were they too embarrassed to admit they were playing a disco cover? or was the band's attempt at getting stations to play the cover unsuccessful resulting in them choosing the title track instead? who knows!? this is only speculation ... the chart (which featured TRACKS) listed "Go Bang!", so that's what we ranked.
