I’m probably a bigger Bush fan than most here. Especially for Gavin’s vocals. Sure. They’ve had their hits, hidden gems, and misses. “Headful of Ghosts” to me falls into the middle somewhere. Not their best, but one that I come back to on occasion.
This one peaked at #38 in 2002 on Alt. I believe the only other song that I could have chosen was “Warm Machine” which we ranked on the 2000 Active Rankdown as that peaked at #38 on Alt as well.

It really sucks what happened to The Ataris after their short-lived big time period. The album “So Long, Astoria” where this song is from along with their huge cover hit “The Boys of Summer” (peaking at #2) and “In This Diary” (just missing the Top 10 at #11) was a goddamn fantastic pop-punk/pop rock album. “The Saddest Song” peaked at #27 on Alt, so it was the only one that I could have chosen here.
They had another album come out in 2006 called “Welcome the Night,” but haven’t been heard from since. I think they had to release that independently from what I remember after label issues. They’ve just released some EPs every few years since. They were a one album wonder I guess unfortunately.

I don’t seem to remember “Rosealia” from the past, but recall “Good” being on radio and MTV often. “Desperately Wanting” and “In The Blood” to some extent. Those of course charted much much better. I can see why this had a low SD as it’s not a great song, but wouldn’t be easy to tank either.
This ended up peaking at #24 on the Alt. chart in 1995 as the third single from their debut full-length album titled “Deluxe.” Apparently, I could have chosen “One More Murder” (#32 in 1998) or “Extra Ordinary” (#35 in 2001). I don’t recall hearing either song back then.

Beck has to go chug a beercan after he goes at #26. His music has always been hit or miss for me and I’ve never fully gotten into his albums. Maybe besides “Mellow Gold” or “Odelay.”
I just didn’t care for this one and it’s apparent that a few of you joined with me here. A couple others thought the opposite. It peaked at on Alt at #27 back in 1994. I don’t remember it at all, but that was around the time that I started getting into music. Other choices could have been “Mixed Bizness” (#36 on Alt in 2000) and “Lost Cause” (also at #36 in 2003).

Cake is definitely a unique band. I can hear a song like “The Distance” any day, but some of their other songs I can live without. I had never heard this one prior to working on this rankdown, but thought it was better than expected.
This song peaked at #31 on Alt back in 1995. I could have also chosen “I Will Survive” (peaked at #28 in 1997), but most of you have probably heard that before.

My condolences to macattack as your top pick goes out much too early at #24. I’ve mentioned how I’m a big fan of Tom’s vocals before. Some Angels & Airwaves songs really gel with me and some don’t. I’m definitely looking forward to new material from them soon.
This was the only song that qualified for this rankdown as it peaked at #32 on Alt back in 2008.

I’ll probably continue to say this in 20 years. Alkaline Trio is one of the most underrated bands out there. I’m a big fan of Matt Skiba’s much more so with them and not nearly as much with blink-182. I’m a bit sad to see this go out in the Bottom 20.
They haven’t had much success on radio, but that’s kind of expected from their sound. Only really “Help Me” (which peaked at #14 in 2008). This song peaked at #38 in 2003. The only other option was “Time To Waste” which barely scared the chart at #40.

I've always found it strangely admirable how Rock 'n' Roll Lifestyle pretty much already nails down Cake's aesthetic (just with rawer production) despite being a debut single.
(also Secret Crowds would have otherwise been ok but jfc all of those "-ire" rhymes bugged the hell out of me)

This song started off with a strong possibility of finishing in the Top 15, but fell short of the Top 20 at the end. I’ve always enjoyed this song even though I don’t love Richard Patrick’s vocals. It just works with the electronic sound of The Crystal Method.
I could have sworn that this was much bigger on radio than it was as it only peaked at #29 on Alt and #30 on Active in 1997. This was the only song of The Crystal Method’s that was eligible for this rankdown as “Name of the Game” and “Born Too Slow” were included on their respective Alternative Year-End Rankdowns.

Angels and Airwaves have always made pretty bland stuff outside of "The Adventure" and "Rebel Girl" IMO, but "Secret Crowds" is fine, it's nothing earth-shattering but it's decent enough. I actually like Tom's vocals quite a bit in general too.

I don’t have much exposure to Blur besides what I’ve heard on rankdowns and of course “Song 2.” Their two other Top 10 hits on Alt were before I really started getting into music in the early 00’s. This song was a bit better than I expected it to be as not a huge fan of Britpop.
This peaked at #27 on Alt in 1993. I don’t recall hearing it before working on this rankdown. It was the only song that I could have used from Blur as “Crazy Beat was used in the 2003 Year-End Rankdown.

I'm pleasantly surprised that one song in particular made the top half. Then again it might not be all that surprising given who all participated in this rankdown. On the other hand, I'm not so pleased that my #39 is still in. That song is probably my least favorite of any I've heard from that band.

This has not been my rankdown LOL. Good luck to everyone else who still has their top pick still in this!
I will, however, blast "Secret Crowds" one more time in its honor. I've always liked Tom's take on big, anthemic arena rock and "Secret Crowds" is the biggest standout of I-Empire in that regard. If anything, it shows who the biggest talent of blink-182 is, and it isn't Mark and Travis.

I barely knew Butthole Surfers besides “Pepper.” I remember hearing “The Shame of Life” a bit on radio in the past. Maybe I knew a couple of other songs over the years, but overall they were definitely a one hit wonder. Their name probably doesn’t help people’s opinions, but this was an interesting song to me and maybe one day, I’ll further check them out.
This peaked at #24 on Alt in 1993. It was also the only song of theirs that I could have used on this rankdown as “The Shame of Life” was used in the 2001 Year-End Alt Rankdown.

This song has always remained with me since it came out. I remember it getting some decent airplay. I miss this kind of Alt Rock from the 90’s and early 00’s. There’s not much to think about. It’s just a carefree and fun song.
This was the only song that charted on Alt from Ben Kweller as it peaked at #29 in 2002. For some reason, I thought that this had come out in the late-90’s prior to checking the year. Maybe this song was too past it’s peak for this kind of sound.
