just submitted. Some real good discoveries. Two artists in particular if they had charted in 2004 to 2006 with these singles (and those songs had been on this list) would have scored in my Top 10 easily: Jace Everett - Bad Things (subsequently used in True Blood) Brian McComas - All Comes Flooding Down Thanks for the extension. "Bad Things" would have been in my top 5! Adore that song. sabre14 I'm starting this now btw lol. Hoping to have it knocked out in a few hrs.

Take these with a grain of salt...
1. What songs will be in the top 5? “If I Don’t Make It Back”, “Bring Me Down”, “Not Ready to Make Nice”, “Tonight”, “You’re Gonna Be”...also hoping to see “Wake Up Older” get close to the top five
2. What songs will be in the bottom 5? “I Play Chicken With the Train”, “That’s How They Do It In Dixie”, “Can’t You Tell”, “King of the Castle”, and “That Girl Is a Cowboy” because Garth
3. Which song will be the most polarizing? Let’s go with “My Kind of Music”
4. Where will your #1 finish? Top five or bust
5. Where will your last place finish? Bottom three for sure
6. Did most of the first-listen discoveries exceed your expectations? There were a lot of songs that I had all but forgotten so it was great getting to revisit them

This rankdown is gonna be wild. 1. What songs will be in the top 5? If I Don’t Make It Back, Not Ready to Make Nice, That's Why I Hate Pontiacs, Wake Up Older, Damn Right 2. What songs will be in the bottom 5? That’s How They Do It In Dixie, It Was An Absolutely Finger-Lickin, Grits and Chicken, Country Music Love Song, I Am the Working Man, The Last of a Dying Breed, That Girl Is a Cowboy 3. Which song will be the most polarizing? I Play Chicken With the Train 4. Where will your #1 finish? Most likely top 10. 5. Where will your last place finish? Probably bottom 5. 6. Did most of the first-listen discoveries exceed your expectations? Me when most of the songs are my first-listen discoveries: Honestly not that much (please don't ban me). Some surprising ones yes but maybe I have a bit too high expectation when I saw the word "gem"...oops And name recognition wins in these anyway.

#116. Hank Williams Jr. (feat. Gretchen Wilson, Big & Rich & Van Zant) - "That's How They Do It In Dixie"
Total Points: 1,263 Average: 97.1 Year Released: March, 2006 Mediabase Peak: #33 Billboard Peak: #35 Rankings:.indulgecountry - 45 gardyfan - 58 LBTrocks - 83 sabre14 - 84 Kanenrá:ke - 97 gonecountry - 99 bboat11 - 109 kw9461 - 112 tim - 112 castleoblivion26 - 116 Cody Wants Out... - 116 recordyear - 116 someguy - 116 "That's How They Do It In Dixie" was released in March of 2006 as the first single off Hank Williams Jr.'s That's How They Do It In Dixie: The Essential Collection album. It was written by Chris Tompkins, Josh Kear and Mark Irwin. It peaked at #33 on Mediabase in June of 2006. The song features Gretchen Wilson, Big & Rich and Van Zant.
Not surprised at all this is last -- I know this one isn't exactly a Pulse favorite lol. I don't think it's as bad as some here, but it's not a huge favorite even if I mildly enjoy it.

#115. Dusty Drake - "I Am The Working Man"
Total Points: 1,244 Average: 95.6 Year Released: September, 2004 Mediabase Peak: #37 Billboard Peak: #43 Rankings:gardyfan - 31 LBTrocks - 41 castleoblivion26 - 88 bboat11 - 101 kw9461 - 101 .indulgecountry - 108 Kanenrá:ke - 108 someguy - 108 gonecountry - 109 recordyear - 109 Cody Wants Out... - 112 sabre14 - 113 tim - 115 Dusty Drake is a singer-songwriter from Pennsylvania. He first released singles and a debut album in 2003, that featured the top 30 single, "One Last Time." His third-career single was "I Am the Working Man" off Warner Bros. Nashville in early September, 2004. It peaked at #37 on Mediabase the last week of October. It wasn't included on an album and Dusty left Warner Bros. Records. He released one more single off Big Machine Records in 2007, the top 40 "Say Yes." Although, he also charted in 2009 with a song called "The 12th Man."
I love Dusty's two top 40 singles but this was my least favorite song from him by a mile. His voice doesn't sound that great here and the song is the epitome of blah. I'm not surprised it's out second-last.

#114. Bret Michaels (feat. Jessica Andrews) - "All I Ever Needed"
Total Points: 1,196 Average: 92.0 Year Released: October, 2004 Mediabase Peak: #41 Billboard Peak: #45 Rankings:kw9461 - 54 tim - 65 Cody Wants Out... - 66 someguy - 81 castleoblivion26 - 90 bboat11 - 94 recordyear - 95 .indulgecountry - 96 gonecountry - 103 LBTrocks - 107 gardyfan - 113 Kanenrá:ke - 116 sabre14 - 116 "All I Ever Needed" by Bret Michaels was released to country radio in October of 2004. It peaked at #41 on Mediabase (which was also its debut). Bret wrote the song by himself. It features Jessica Andrews on backing vocals. This was Michaels' only charting country single. Michaels had some solo success but he's best known for his work in the rock group, Poison.
I can't stand Bret Michaels' voice. This song's melody is also non-existent. A no-brainer last place song for me lol.

Oh yay, this started! I did not do predictions because I honestly have zero idea how 95% of this rankdown will go. The only thing that is obvious to me is that "Bring Me Down" and "Not Ready To Make Nice" will probably make the top 5, and maybe even be the top 2. Those two songs should have never been excluded from the regular year-end rankdowns. I am personally predicting a landslide victory for "Bring Me Down" here, because Miranda is always a sneaky one in large full-genre rankdowns...
Other songs that I would like to see in the top 5 are "If I Don't Make It Back", "Tonight", and "You're Gonna Be", but I am not confident in any of those. YGB is not a Pulse favorite from Reba, Tracy Lawrence in general is hella underrated on Pulse, and "Tonight" is not as unanimously loved as most of Sara's singles.

#113. Hot Apple Pie - "Easy Does It"
Total Points: 1,191 Average: 91.6 Year Released: March, 2006 Mediabase Peak: #48 Billboard Peak: #50 Rankings:sabre14 - 41 Kanenrá:ke - 57 gonecountry - 81 someguy - 83 kw9461 - 84 recordyear - 87 Cody Wants Out... - 101 .indulgecountry - 104 castleoblivion26 - 105 tim - 111 gardyfan - 112 LBTrocks - 112 bboat11 - 113 Hot Apple Pie was a band formed by former Little Texas member Brady Seals, who also had a solo career in-between Little Texas and Hot Apple Pie, as well as after. Signed to DreamWorks Nashville (and later with MCA, after DreamWorks dissolved), they reached #22 on Mediabase with their debut, "Hillbillies" in August of 2005. "We're Makin' Up" followed it by reaching the top 50. "Easy Does It" would be released the week after CRS in 2006 as the album's third and final single. It peaked at #48 in late April.
After guitarist Mark Matejka left the band later that spring for Lynyrd Skynyrd, the band would eventually leave UMG Nashville and eventually disbanded by 2007. Bassist Keith Horne played for Waylon Jennings and later, Luke Bryan.
I knew this one would bow out early but I loved Hot Apple Pie's only album. It was definitely left-of-center but the musicianship was superb and the style was so fresh and different (without being the awful copycat stuff we see today). "Easy Does It" was a logical single choice looking back but radio cooled off on them after DreamWorks went away.

#112. Shannon Lawson - "Just Like a Redneck"
Total Points: 1,142 Average: 87.8 Year Released: June, 2004 Mediabase Peak: #46 Billboard Peak: #48 Rankings:kw9461 - 20 gardyfan - 44 Cody Wants Out... - 48 recordyear - 89 sabre14 - 91 LBTrocks - 98 .indulgecountry - 100 castleoblivion26 - 102 tim - 104 someguy - 107 gonecountry - 108 Kanenrá:ke - 115 bboat11 - 116 Shannon Lawson is a singer-songwriter from Kentucky. He was first signed to MCA Nashville in 2002 and released his debut album, Chase the Sun, which included his debut single "Goodbye on a Bad Day," which peaked at #24 on Mediabase. After leaving MCA in 2003, Shannon joined the MuzikMafia, which was an underground group of musicians in Nashville that included Big & Rich, Gretchen Wilson, Cowboy Troy and James Otto. He signed to Clint Black's label Equity Music Group (Little Big Town, Carolina Rain) in 2004 and released two singles, including "Just Like a Redneck." It peaked at #46 on Mediabase in July of 2004. He would leave Equity by 2005.
Shannon also co-wrote Big & Rich's top 10 hit, "Look at You."
Shannon Lawson's music on Equity was so much different than his only album for MCA, which he recorded at just 19 years of age. I think his true music style is "Just Like a Redneck," although I loved 'Goodbye on a Bad Day." "Just Like a Redneck" is exactly the kind of song Pulse doesn't enjoy, so it's not surprising it's out, but I do find it mildly enjoyable, and I like everything in my top 95 or so lol.

#111. Cowboy Troy (feat. Big & Rich) - "I Play Chicken With The Train"
Total Points: 1,104 Average: 84.9 Year Released: March, 2005 Mediabase Peak: #50 Billboard Peak: #48 Rankings:recordyear - 8 LBTrocks - 16 gonecountry - 37 gardyfan - 77 Cody Wants Out... - 95 sabre14 - 95 bboat11 - 98 castleoblivion26 - 109 .indulgecountry - 111 Kanenrá:ke - 111 someguy - 115 kw9461 - 116 tim - 116 "I Play Chicken With The Train" was released as the debut single for Cowboy Troy (Troy Lee Coleman III) in March of 2005 off Raybaw/Warner Bros. Records Nashville. It peaked at #48 on Billboard. The song features Big & Rich. Its subject describes Cowboy Troy's playing chicken with the train with the record labels of Nashville and country radio. The song was off his debut major label album, Loco Motive, which believe it or not, debuted at #2 on the country albums chart in May of 2005. The other two radio singles off the album were "If You Don't Wanna Love Me" (feat. Sarah Buxton) and "My Last Yee Haw" (feat. Big & Rich).
Cowboy Troy has continued to release albums up until 2017. "I Play Chicken With the Train" is his only charting single of his own, although "Our America" with Big & Rich and Gretchen Wilson also charted in 2005. Cowboy Troy is a member of the MuzikMafia and has been opening for Big & Rich since they started out on Warner Bros. Nashville.
I don't like most of Cowboy Troy's hick-hop music but "I Play Chicken With The Train" does have a really good melody and some clever lyrics, so it escaped my 100's (I also may or may not have liked this one more when it first came out lol). The only song of his I love is "If You Don't Wanna Love Me," featuring Sarah Buxton. This song narrowly avoided being out in the bottom 5 here.

Non-Rankdown Song Highlight:
Cowboy Troy (feat. Sarah Buxton) - "If You Don't Wanna Love Me"
Released in August of 2005, "If You Don't Wanna Love" me was the second single for Cowboy Troy off his major label debut album, Loco Motive. It features Sarah Buxton, who was incubating the MuzikMafia at the time, before signing with Lyric Street Records in 2006. The song did not chart.
The rapping from Cowboy Troy isn't my thing but this song made me stop and pay attention for sure. I think they found the right balance here and is a drastic contrast from "I Play Chicken With The Train."

Definitely thought I'd be the highest ranker for "I Play Chicken With The Train" so thanks for your top 10 rank recordyear lol. I get why it's hated but I love Cowboy Troy and that song is such a JAM!

The Sarah Buxton song is the better of the Cowboy Troy songs, but the rapping still makes the song vastly worse than it should be. Just never going to be a fan of that songstyle.
The Shannon Lawson song on the other hand, is a total jam. I knew it would be poorly received here (the lyrics and vocals are quite over the top), but I've loved it from the first time I heard it. It may be over the top, but it always puts a smile on my face. His follow-up single, "Smokin' Grass" is quirky as well, but well worth seeking out. Not sure how anyone at Equity thought radio was going to play those two singles, but I'm still glad they existed.

Not sure how anyone at Equity thought radio was going to play those two singles, but I'm still glad they existed. I know, based off long-ago interviews with Little Big Town and Carolina Rain, Clint Black gave his artists at Equity total creative freedom. LBT didn't have that with their first corporate label deal, I'm assuming Shannon didn't either, and Carolina Rain turned down a record deal because they said the label wanted to shift their sound to pop. In the end, that does hurt an act's chances at radio I guess, but it was fun and I loved all those artists music. "Smokin' Grass" is definitely a wtf single choice lol. That was the single before "Just Like a Redneck" and I know it's not about what it implies (play on words -- about Bluegrass) but I can see a radio station looking at that and saying "uh, no" lol.

The lyrics in That's How They Do It In Dixie are a straight NO.
Why does anyone think that the chanting in I Am The Working Man is good idea and select it as radio single lmao. This is at best polarizing and at worst digging own grave.
I don't expect I Play Chicken With The Train to be this rock influenced, and escape bottom 5 of the rankdown lol. It has got a big wild energy and the rapping is actually smooth unlike the country-rap collaborations that we saw in the following years.
Probably won't rank If You Don't Wanna Love Me high because it reminds me of those rent-a-rapper songs from late 00s to early 10s. Also Sarah Buxton sounds too emotionless here. i appreciate the theme though.

#110. Mark Wills - "That's a Woman"
Total Points: 1,102 Average: 84.7 Year Released: November, 2003 Mediabase Peak: #41 Billboard Peak: #40 Rankings:bboat11 - 28 gonecountry - 56 .indulgecountry - 59 kw9461 - 67 Kanenrá:ke - 80 tim - 91 gardyfan - 93 castleoblivion26 - 94 sabre14 - 98 recordyear - 102 LBTrocks - 110 Cody Wants Out... - 111 someguy - 113 "That's a Woman" was released as the second and final single off Mark Wills' And the Crowd Goes Wild album in November of 2003. It peaked at #40 on Billboard in January-February of 2004. The song was written by Rivers Rutherford and Steven Dale Jones. It was also Mark's final single for Mercury Nashville.
This song is fine but it's a little on the boring side. I've always liked Mark's music though. It's pretty amazing how much his radio career tailed off in the 2000's, other than the mega-hit that was "19 Somethin'," which was literally the second-most heard song on country radio from 2000-2009.

Total Points: 1,094 Average: 84.1 Year Released: December, 2003 Mediabase Peak: #29 Billboard Peak: #31 Rankings:someguy - 13 kw9461 - 26 tim - 51 recordyear - 75 gardyfan - 83 sabre14 - 88 gonecountry - 98 Kanenrá:ke - 100 bboat11 - 108 Cody Wants Out... - 110 .indulgecountry - 113 LBTrocks - 114 castleoblivion26 - 115 "Guy Like Me" was released as the second and final single off Pat Green's Wave on Wave album the last week of December, 2003. It peaked at #29 on Mediabase in late March, 2004. Pat wrote the song with David Neuhauser.
This one's good but never been one of my favorite Pat singles. It does have his older sound though, which I appreciate. I know he isn't a Pulse favorite here but I've enjoyed most of his discography, and he's still massive in Texas.

#108. Blue County - "Nothin' But Cowboy Boots"
Total Points: 1,080 Average: 83.0 Year Released: December, 2004 Mediabase Peak: #34 Billboard Peak: #38 Rankings:castleoblivion26 - 61 LBTrocks - 64 kw9461 - 69 .indulgecountry - 73 gonecountry - 78 bboat11 - 80 Cody Wants Out... - 83 Kanenrá:ke - 84 recordyear - 86 gardyfan - 91 sabre14 - 93 tim - 107 someguy - 111 "Nothin' But Cowboy Boots" was Blue County's third-career single off their self-titled, debut album. It was released in December of 2004 and peaked at #34 on Mediabase in February of 2005. The song was written by Aaron Benward and Lee Thomas Miller.
Blue County is a country duo consisting of Aaron Benward and Scott Reeves. They released six singles with Curb Records from 2003-2006, including the Mediabase top 10 single, "Good Little Girls" from April of 2004. After leaving Curb in 2007, they disbanded for a while focusing on other endeavors, including acting and the entertainment business with their families. Aaron was in a Christian duo with his dad in the 90's. Blue County reunited in 2018 and have performed and released music independently.
I love Blue County...but "Nothin' But Cowboy Boots" is my least favorite single of theirs by a mile lol. "That Summer Song" is far superior and I wish it had been released earlier in the album cycle.

#107. David Lee Murphy - "Inspiration"
Total Points: 1,066 Average: 82.0 Year Released: October, 2004 Mediabase Peak: #43 Billboard Peak: #46 Rankings:someguy - 33 castleoblivion26 - 45 kw9461 - 52 gardyfan - 66 .indulgecountry - 68 gonecountry - 88 tim - 92 Cody Wants Out... - 98 bboat11 - 99 sabre14 - 100 LBTrocks - 105 recordyear - 108 Kanenrá:ke - 112 "Inspiration" was released as the second and final single off David Lee Murphy's Tryin' to Get There album in October of 2004. It peaked at #43 on Mediabase the week before Christmas. The song features Lee Roy Parnell on backing vocals. The song was written by Murphy and Kim Tribble. It was off Koch Record and Audium Nashville, which folded by January of 2005.
This album was pretty good and it's nearly impossible to find nowadays, as are most of the tracks on the record. I'm guessing David Lee Murphy never bought back the masters to it when the label went under. "Loco" reached #5 in 2004, which was the lead single.
I have no idea why this was chosen as a single. It's a moot point since the label went under by 2005 anyway, but I thought for sure "I Like It Already" or "Mama's Last" were going to be the single choices.

Not sure why Pulse hates Pat Green so much, but "A Guy Like Me" deserved better. The verse structure takes a bit to get used to, but the chorus melody is terrific. Not among my absolute favorites from that album ("Poetry" should have been the single), but still damn good.

#106. Catherine Britt & Elton John - "Where We Both Say Goodbye"
Total Points: 1,061 Average: 81.6 Year Released: July, 2005 Mediabase Peak: #36 Billboard Peak: #38 Rankings:castleoblivion26 - 24 tim - 58 gonecountry - 65 .indulgecountry - 65 someguy - 74 recordyear - 82 sabre14 - 86 LBTrocks - 88 Kanenrá:ke - 89 kw9461 - 102 Cody Wants Out... - 108 gardyfan - 108 bboat11 - 112 "Where We Both Say Goodbye" was released as the second single for Catherine Britt on RCA Nashville in July of 2005. It's a duet with Elton John. The song peaked at #36 on Mediabase in September of 2005. It was written by Britt and Jerry Salley. It was never included on an album.
Britt is from Newcastle and despite only charting three singles on US country radio, she's had a long career since in Australia.
I'm not a fan of Elton John on this song but the song itself I enjoy. It's not a huge favorite but very solid. This rankdown was so strong I ended up putting it in the 80's.
