#65. Trent Willmon - "The Good Life"
Total Points: 793 Average: 61.0 Year Released: February, 2005 Mediabase Peak: #41 Billboard Peak: #38 Rankings:kw9461 - 11 someguy - 20 gonecountry - 26 tim - 45 sabre14 - 46 bboat11 - 54 castleoblivion26 - 71 .indulgecountry - 76 LBTrocks - 77 gardyfan - 81 Cody Wants Out... - 90 Kanenrá:ke - 95 recordyear - 101 Following: bigfan101"The Good Life" was the last single off Trent Willmon's self-titled, debut album. The song charted for many weeks from August of 2004 to early 2005 as an album track (Texas stations), and was given a release in February of 2005. The single peaked at #38 on Billboard.
"The Good Life" was never really given a "full" push, however. It only reached 9 monitored Mediabase stations by the time it fell off.
I love Trent Willmon and his debut album. I ranked this the lowest of the three in this rankdown but I still love it. I can't believe he never reached the top 20 at country radio. He's one of the biggest "what ifs" of the 2000's.

Still playing catch up! :)
105) "King Of The Castle" - I prefer his second single by a good amount but this was such an interesting song to debut with. Not surprised it wasn't well received here but I find it grows on you the more you listen to it. I wonder if someone like Brad Paisley could've made this a hit back then? (82)
104) "Can't You Tell" - I love Diamond Rio but this style just didn't fit them, they sound awkward on this one. The Mavericks would've killed this one. (113)
103) "One Step At A Time" - Nice album filler but I never understood this one as a single choice. Then again the two big hits of the album were really the only two that felt single like to me. All that said I do like this one, it just doesn't make me excited to heart it.
102) "Good People" - Whoo second perfect ranking! I love Jeff Bates, and this is a good song but again just a weird single choice, especially for a lead single. (102)
101) "Come Friday" - Love me some Aaron, but this is him on auto-pilot and I had to put this near the bottom. I'm kinda shocked it wasn't out sooner. (110)
100) "Cowgirls" - Of the 4 songs I have from Kerry this is my least favorite, but I still thought this was a fun uptempo and I thought it would get a little more love on here. Also I was always surprised this wasn't a bigger hit. I didn't think it'd be huge but it sounded radio friendly for the time. Kristy Lee Cook covered it on her debut album too. (22)
99) "Not Me" - Amazing song and having Vince and Emmylou providing backing vocals help carry it. Keni wasn't the best singer and my ranking honestly reflects that, but he had a ear for good songs and both his albums I've heard were strong. (73)
98) "That Girl Is A Cowboy" - Garth on auto-pilot, not bad but just kinda there. (103)
97) "I Love Her, She Hates Me" - Darryl's single discography is surprisingly strong and I love most of his singles with one big exception! This one would've been a hit I believe if the label hadn't folded, had a unique sound that I think would've worked well. (58)
96) "The Last Of A Dying Breed" - Neal was always hit or miss with me. This one fell more on the miss side. Actually less of a miss just more on the forgettable end of things. I also don't like the chorus melody. The verses work better. (106)
95) "Two Hearts" - Of all the random artists to randomly enter the charts over the years Zona's been one of the odder ones for me. I don't remember him ever being all that big a name in Texas so why him? haha Really nice simple song, that probably carried it as far as it got honestly. (83)
94) "This Time Around" - I love CCR so so much and keep hoping they'd get back together one day, none of their music after disbanding hits the same way. Garage is my favorite album from them and this is one of the best on it! Love the melody here! Ashley Ray did a really great cover a few years afterwards too!
93) "Corn Fed" - I loved Shannon's voice, there was something about it that stood out from everybody else. Her unreleased debut from 1999 on Arista is fantastic and the tracks I heard from her BNA album were just as strong! Corn Fed was a fun album with some great tracks. The title track may not be the most amazing but it was catchy and I really liked sound they were going for with her here! (71)
92) "This Is The Life" - Oh another perfect ranking! I like all of Billy's 90's output but something about his Curb album seemed off and I never really had any of the singles click with me as much. This is the best one and I'm still waiting for the other to fall out now haha (92)
91) "Son Of A Preacher Man" - A classic song, no complaints here and I like Sherrie on it but I couldn't place it any higher because I always found the production to be a little muted sounding. If the production was just a little better this would've competed for my top 30. (79)
90) "What You Ain't Gonna Get" - I love Lauren's voice and this was such a great little jam! I see looking back how it may have stood out as too different for radio but this and "The Carolina Kind" should've been hits imo. Her debut album (also unreleased) was fantastic so it's a shame it never saw the light of day. Worth tracking down for those interested, also my favorite song from after she left Warner Bros. was "Riverstone"
89) "Summer Girl" - Ok I know I say I love a lot of these songs and/or artists but I will always hold that Jessica would be competing for my all time favorite if she had got to release more music. She's one of my favorite vocalists and I really like how her voice was changing as she got older. "Summer Girl" is maybe a little light and "fluffy" but it's perfect for well summer days and just feeling good. (42)
88) "Sweet Summer Rain" - I always got a kick out of how many different configurations I have in my library of Tim Rushlow haha This was a good song but I can see why it didn't take off. Oh another perfect ranking! (88)

True story - I once used the song "The Good Life" as the basis for a Philosophy paper in college. I don't think I got an A on that one... Great song though. Trent Willmon's two albums were both excellent.

Trent Willmon's two albums were both excellent. Agree, both albums had some great song. Trent has created quite a career as a producer. He's produced many albums for a wide variety of singers, including Cody Johnson's last four CDs.

#64. Lonestar - "I'll Die Tryin'"
Total Points: 787 Average: 60.5 Year Released: November, 2005 Mediabase Peak: #39 Billboard Peak: #43 Rankings:bboat11 - 12 Cody Wants Out... - 25 kw9461 - 30 .indulgecountry - 39 gardyfan - 49 gonecountry - 50 tim - 54 castleoblivion26 - 62 someguy - 77 Kanenrá:ke - 86 LBTrocks - 89 sabre14 - 101 recordyear - 113 Following: bigfan101"I'll Die Tryin'" was released as the second and final single off Lonestar's Coming Home album in November of 2005. It peaked at #39 on Mediabase in February of 2006. The song was their first to miss the top 30 since "Saturday Night" in 1999, which was their only other single to miss the top 30 at that time.
I'm kind of surprised this one did so well. It's always been on the boring side to me. The melody doesn't do too much for my liking.

#63. Jessi Alexander - "Honeysuckle Sweet"
Total Points: 783 Average: 60.2 Year Released: April, 2004 Mediabase Peak: #51 Billboard Peak: #52 Rankings: Kanenrá:ke - 19 recordyear - 30 .indulgecountry - 37 gonecountry - 41 someguy - 41 Cody Wants Out... - 47 LBTrocks - 62 gardyfan - 71 kw9461 - 73 castleoblivion26 - 75 tim - 88 sabre14 - 89 bboat11 - 110 Following: bigfan101"Honeysuckle Sweet" was released as the debut single for Jessi Alexander in April of 2004 off Columbia Nashville. It peaked at #51 on Mediabase in May. The song was off her debut album (and only) for Columbia Nashville, released in March of 2005. Two more singles were released off the album ("Make Me Stay or Make Me Go" and "Canyon Prayer"). Jessi left the label by mid-2005.
Alexander is now known as a prolific songwriter. She's penned songs such as "The Climb," "I Drive Your Truck," "Drink on It" and "Mine Would Be You." She's married to singer-songwriter Jon Randall, who has also been a major-label recording artist, including on Epic Nashville at the same time Jessi was with Columbia.
Jessi's a true talent. I don't love "Honeysuckle Sweet" but I still enjoy it and it's a shame she never caught on at radio.

#62. Ray Scott - "Gone Either Way"
Total Points: 777 Average: 59.7 Year Released: April, 2006 Mediabase Peak: #44 Billboard Peak: #53 Rankings:gonecountry - 16 recordyear - 22 LBTrocks - 30 Cody Wants Out... - 51 Kanenrá:ke - 56 castleoblivion26 - 57 bboat11 - 65 gardyfan - 65 tim - 68 kw9461 - 71 sabre14 - 73 .indulgecountry - 94 someguy - 109 Following: bigfan101"Gone Either Way" was released as the second-career single for Ray Scott off his debut album, My Kind of Music in April of 2006 off Warner Bros. Nashville. The single peaked at #44 on Mediabase in late May. Another case of the recurrent rules on Mediabase and Billboard causing a huge chart peak discrepancy. "Gone Either Way" would also be the only other charting single for Scott in his career. He left Warner Bros. Nashville after 2006.
Ray went on to release albums independently from 2008 to today off Jethropolitan Records. He has received Sirius/XM airplay with singles such as "Those Jeans", "Ain't Always Thirsty" and "Livin' This Way."
I liked "My Kind of Music" better but "Gone Either Way" was really good too. I've always been a fan of Ray. He was considered too traditional for 2005-2006 radio, which is saying something lol. "Ain't Always Thirsty" remains my favorite song of his post Warner Bros. Nashville.

#61. Tracy Lawrence - "It's All How You Look At It"
Total Points: 773 Average: 59.4 Year Released: May, 2004 Mediabase Peak: #37 Billboard Peak: #36 Rankings:recordyear - 11 gardyfan - 15 castleoblivion26 - 27 LBTrocks - 42 Cody Wants Out... - 45 tim - 50 someguy - 57 gonecountry - 66 bboat11 - 72 kw9461 - 83 .indulgecountry - 84 Kanenrá:ke - 109 sabre14 - 112 Following: bigfan101"It's All How You Look at It" was released as the second single off Tracy Lawrence's album Strong in May of 2004. The single peaked at #36 on Billboard in August. It was written by Rivers Rutherford, Dave Berg and Georgia Middleman. The song was the follow-up to Tracy's top 5 hit, "Paint Me a Birmingham." It was also his only LP album for DreamWorks Nashville. I love Tracy. Most of his singles are great, but this one is towards the bottom of his discography for me. It's got a cool message but the music and arrangement just isn't for me and I don't think the new sound fit him very well. Looks like most enjoyed this here, so Kanenrá:ke and I are in the minority lol.

"It's All How You Look At It" wasn't bad, but it was definitely the weakest of Tracy's songs in this rankdown by like every metric you could possibly use to evaluate songs. I'm not familiar with a lot of his flops (yet... ;) ), but I am sure this one will end up near the bottom for me among his singles.

#60. Kellie Coffey - "Dance With My Father"
Total Points: 760 Average: 58.4 Year Released: May, 2004 Mediabase Peak: #39 Billboard Peak: #41 Rankings: .indulgecountry - 9 Cody Wants Out... - 22 tim - 26 castleoblivion26 - 43 Kanenrá:ke - 48 recordyear - 48 someguy - 51 bboat11 - 53 gonecountry - 70 gardyfan - 90 kw9461 - 90 sabre14 - 102 LBTrocks - 108 Following: bigfan101 "Dance With My Father" was released as Kellie Coffey's final single for BNA Records in May of 2004. The song peaked at #39 on Mediabase in late June. It's a country cover of an AC/R&B song by Luther Vandross, which was released the year prior. Vandross wrote the song with Richard Marx. Kellie's version never appeared on an album due to its under-performance.
Kellie Coffey is a singer from Oklahoma that first signed with Sony Nashville/BNA Records in 2001. She reached the top 10 with her debut single, "When You Lie Next to Me" in 2002 and charted four more singles before leaving BNA. She's released music independently since. Kellie started her career singing demos for Disney, used in promos and their theme parks. She also sang backup for Barbara Streisand before moving to Nashville.
I love most of Kellie's music ("Texas Plates" was one of my favorite songs of the 2000's), but "Dance With My Father" is by far my least favorite single of hers. I can't get into the melody and find the song a little boring. Her vocals save it, which is why it escaped my bottom 10.

#59. Scotty Emerick - "What's Up With That"
Total Points: 758 Average: 58.3 Year Released: March, 2006 Mediabase Peak: #44 Billboard Peak: #52 Rankings: gardyfan - 12 recordyear - 18 Cody Wants Out... - 29 sabre14 - 33 kw9461 - 42 LBTrocks - 47 gonecountry - 55 someguy - 55 .indulgecountry - 71 bboat11 - 77 Kanenrá:ke - 98 tim - 109 castleoblivion26 - 112 Following: bigfan101"What's Up With That" was released as Scotty Emerick's fourth and final single in March of 2006 off Show Dog Nashville. It peaked at #44 on Mediabase in April but held on to the chart through May. The song was never on a studio album for Scotty but was included on the Broken Bridges soundtrack.
Scotty Emerick is a singer-songwriter from Florida. He was first signed to DreamWorks Nashville for his debut album The Coast is Clear in 2003, where his debut single "I Can't Take You Anywhere" reached the top 20 on Mediabase. Scotty released two more charting singles for DreamWorks in 2004. After DreamWorks closed in 2005, Toby Keith brought him to Show Dog. Scotty has probably been Toby Keith's most frequent collaborator during his prime in the 2000's. Scotty co-wrote "I'm Just Talking About Tonight," "Beer for My Horses," "I Love This Bar," "Whiskey Girl," As Good as I Once Was, "Get Drunk and Be Somebody," and "A Little Too Late." Emerick also co-wrote "Like My Dog" by Billy Currington. He's performed with Toby many times in concert.
I think Scotty Emerick was extremely talented as a songwriter and he's got an easy-going singing voice. I'm kind of surprised he never caught on at radio. "What's Up With That" is a great song. It's got a fantastic melody and it combines heartbreak with some humor, which I'm a fan of. Glad it did relatively well here.

“It’s All How You Look At It” is a really good song, and I probably would have ranked it higher if it was sung by a vocalist that I enjoy. But personal taste aside, I don’t even think it’s a good song for his voice anyway so that holds me back from loving it.
What’s Up With That” is so catchy, especially in the verse, and I love the instrumentation.

It peaked at #50 on Mediabase in September, but held on to the chart until early October. The song was written by Trent Willmon and Chris DuBois. It would also be Trent's final single for Columbia Nashville. He left the label by the end of 2006.
Man, I can't believe this one bombed so hard at radio. Granted, August and September of 2006 were stupid ridiculous with mainstream releases from established artists, so that certainly contributed, but this song is great. Awesome melody, production and music.

Total Points: 745 Average: 57.3 Year Released: February, 2005 Mediabase Peak: #43 Billboard Peak: #44 Rankings:gardyfan - 2 someguy - 12 gonecountry - 14 recordyear - 15 Kanenrá:ke - 33 Cody Wants Out... - 43 sabre14 - 63 kw9461 - 81 bboat11 - 89 castleoblivion26 - 91 tim - 93 LBTrocks - 95 .indulgecountry - 114 Following: bigfan101"My Name" was released in February of 2005 as the second single off George Canyon's third album, One Good Friend off Universal South Records. It peaked at #43 on Mediabase in April. The song was a top 5 hit in Canada. It would be Canyon's only charting single in the U.S.
George Canyon is a country singer from Nova Scotia, Canada. His birth name is Fredrick George Lays. Canyon charted nearly 30 singles in Canada from 2000-2018. He's one of the most prolific Canadian country artists of the 2000's.
I can see how people would dislike "My Name" but I think the sentiment was delivered appropriately. I've always found it enjoyable and it takes me back to the spring of 2005.

"So Am I" has one the best melody's of the 00's. No clue how radio ignored it. Such a great jam.
Never understood why Universal South decided to go with "My Name" as George Canyon's first US single instead of his previous hit in Canada, "I'll Never Do Better Than You". That song was really strong, and likely had a much better chance to connect than an oddball song like "My Name" (which I like, it's just unconventional). I really liked him on Nashville Star, it's a shame he never caught on in the US.

“It’s All How You Look At It” has never really been a favorite of mine if only because I’ve always been disappointed that they chose this as the second single to release on the heels of “Paint Me a Birmingham”. I always thought “A Far Cry from You” sounded like a hit and it remains one of my favorite album tracks from Tracy.

Ray Scott reminds me of TJ Osborne for his baritone voice and rock edge of the music itself. I may not like My Kind of Music due to its theme so wrong one is out first imo. I don't get the hate for It's All How You Look At It tbh. If there's anything bad about that song, it's that overexaggerated twang from Tracy Lawrence. Also the visual effect in 2:14-2:18 of the music video is wtf. Wasn't expecting My Name to be such a heavy song before reading the lyrics. It's probably too difficult to be a hit afer people know the meaning.
Non-Rankdown Song: So do the shadows in Bad Things have any doubts at all? Anyway it's another rock-leaning song that sounds pretty cool. Probably will be top 20 if it were in the rankdown. Why Me is another solid track from The Lost Trailers. Pitiful yet hopeful protagonist is essential country music.

#56. Jedd Hughes - "High Lonesome"
Total Points: 734 Average: 56.4 Year Released: May, 2004 Mediabase Peak: #53 Billboard Peak: #54 Rankings:Kanenrá:ke - 20 gardyfan - 30 Cody Wants Out... - 38 recordyear - 39 kw9461 - 47 LBTrocks - 52 sabre14 - 53 bboat11 - 56 tim - 56 someguy - 58 .indulgecountry - 70 castleoblivion26 - 99 gonecountry - 116 Following: bigfan101"High Lonesome" was released as the debut single for Australian singer-songwriter Jedd Hughes in May of 2004 off MCA Nashville. It peaked at #53 on Mediabase in early July. Hughes charted one more time with "Soldier for the Lonely" in early 2005. He would later leave MCA. Both songs were off his debut album, Transcontinental.
Hughes befriended Terry McBride and moved to Nashville, where he was a guitarist for Patty Loveless before getting his record deal. Hughes also co-wrote Josh Gracin's 2005 top 5 hit, "Stay With Me (Brass Bed)." He also played guitar and wrote a track on Little Big Town's Tornado album in 2012. He also was part of a short-lived duo with Sarah Buxton called Buxton Hughes.
Really good song, although I can see why radio didn't really embrace Jedd Hughes. "High Lonesome" wasn't the typical radio single, especially for a debut. I think radio forgot about him when "Solider for the Lonely" came out.

Oh wow, I'm surprised "High Lonesome" is out this early. That was one of the few random flops that I actually remembered hearing on the radio back in the day! I'll take the perfect ranking though :)

#55. Steve Azar - "You Don't Know a Thing"
Total Points: 733 Average: 56.3 Year Released: June, 2006 Mediabase Peak: #44 Billboard Peak: #49 Rankings:kw9461 - 5 gonecountry - 9 recordyear - 9 sabre14 - 20 gardyfan - 40 someguy - 40 castleoblivion26 - 54 .indulgecountry - 67 Kanenrá:ke - 85 bboat11 - 97 LBTrocks - 100 tim - 102 Cody Wants Out... - 105 Following: bigfan101"You Don't Know a Thing" by Steve Azar was released in June of 2006 off Midas Records and Steve's own Dang Records. New Revolution promoted the song to country radio, along with Tracy Byrd's "Cheapest Motel," which were the first singles New Revolution ever promoted. It peaked at #44 on Mediabase in September, but held on to the chart through October.
The single wasn't included on an album right away but later was included on Steve's Indianola album in 2008. Steve wrote it with Radney Foster. The music video features professional golfer, John Daly.
Absolutely love this song and I wish it could have at least made the top 50. Some of the best lyrics in the entire rankdown, and that's saying something. Great melody too. I wish I listened to the song more when I was a teenager lol.
