#14. George Strait - "Texas"
Total Points: 499 Average: 38.3 Year Released: June, 2005 Mediabase Peak: #36 Billboard Peak: #35 Rankings:gonecountry - 2 tim - 3 gardyfan - 5 bboat11 - 17 Cody Wants Out... - 21 LBTrocks - 26 .indulgecountry - 30 someguy - 43 sabre14 - 51 Darkest Hour - 61 Kanenrá:ke - 67 kw9461 - 76 castleoblivion26 - 97 Following: bigfan101"Texas" was never technically a single for George Strait, but it debuted on the chart the last week of June in 2005, based off Texas airplay. The song peaked at #35 on Billboard and #36 on Mediabse in September, but it held on to the chart through the end of the year. It tallied 26 weeks charting, without ever getting past #36 on Mediabase. Quite the chart run lol.
The song was off George's 2005 album, Somewhere Down In Texas. It was written by Steven Dale Jones and Phillip White.
I remember looking at the chart that week in 2005 and seeing this debut. I went "oh look, the new Strait single, debuting while "You'll Be There" is still hanging on to the chart" lol. I soon found out it was just a song Texas stations were playing. Other than the Cowboys winning the Super Bowl lyric, I love everything about this song lol. Such great production from Tony Brown and I love the steel and fiddle. It's 2005 nostalgia.

13. Chely Wright - "Back of the Bottom Drawer"

It peaked at #38 on Mediabase in June. The single was off her own Painted Red Music Group, but promoted to radio through Vivation! Chely wrote the song with Liz Rose.
This song is so well-written. It takes multiple listens to recognize all the lyrics and the meaning of the song. It's a song I think most everyone can relate to. It's okay to not forget about stuff we regret or don't like about our past, because it makes us better people moving forward. I only put it where I did because of hos strong this rankdown was. Glad this one was well received.

#12. Tracy Byrd - "Cheapest Motel"
Total Points: 488 Average: 37.5 Year Released: June, 2006 Mediabase Peak: #45 Billboard Peak: #55 Rankings:Cody Wants Out... - 4 gonecountry - 7 tim - 18 Darkest Hour - 19 bboat11 - 23 LBTrocks - 29 .indulgecountry - 31 gardyfan - 36 sabre14 - 39 kw9461 - 58 castleoblivion26 - 63 Kanenrá:ke - 68 someguy - 93 Following: bigfan101"Cheapest Motel" was released as the lead single off Tracy Byrd's Different Things album in June of 2006. It peaked at #45 on Mediabase in August. The single was promoted through New Revolution Entertainment, which was a new promotion service in 2006. The single would be Tracy's final charting single at country radio. The song was written by Cole Deggs, Mike Geiger and Trey Matthews. Deggs would chart with his band the following year (Cole Deggs & the Lonesome).
One of my favorite Tracy Byrd singles. Definitely a traditional-minded country song with brutally-honest lyrics. I knew it wouldn't do much with Tracy's label situation, however.

I will be completely heartbroken if "No One'll Ever Love Me" misses Top 10 where it has made it this far and I did not expect it well this didn't age well. So happy this song made it to #15 because I didn't expect it to but I started to get excited that it could make the Top 10 so seeing it out here hurts lol. Anyway, this is one of those songs that I have a personal connection with because when my Grandmother passed I actually used this song to help me to write a poem about her, that I read at her funeral. It is not a song I can handle listening to often but I do love this one. Also Rebecca Lynn Howard is just so underrated. Still sad she never broke out because I love her voice so much. I really hope for a new album soon because I do love "A Good Place To Turn Around". Will be doing a mini-rankdown series of her career eventually, which I cannot wait to get to!

Non-Rankdown Song Highlights:
Shelly Fairchild - "Tiny Town"
Shelly Fairchild - "Kiss Me"
Shelly Fairchild is a singer-songwriter from Mississippi. She signed to Columbia Nashville in 2004 and charted in the top 40 with "You Don't Lie Here Anymore." Her second single was "Tiny Town," which was released in February of 2005. It peaked at #50 on Mediabase in March. Her third and final single for the label was "Kiss Me," which was released in June of 2005 and peaked at #55 on Mediabase in late July.
I'm surprised I never included "Tiny Town" in the rankdown, so I figured I'd do one last non-rankdown highlight. Great songs.

#11. Ashley Monroe - "Satisfied"
Total Points: 478 Average: 36.7 Year Released: March, 2006 Mediabase Peak: #42 Billboard Peak: #43 Rankings: LBTrocks - 1 Darkest Hour - 5 Kanenrá:ke - 9 tim - 11 gardyfan - 14 bboat11 - 21 .indulgecountry - 25 someguy - 26 castleoblivion26 - 36 kw9461 - 68 Cody Wants Out... - 77 sabre14 - 83 gonecountry - 102 Following: bigfan101 "Satisfied" was released as Ashley Monroe's debut single off Columbia Nashville in March of 2006. It peaked at #42 on Mediabase in early May. The album of the same name was released to stations on an advance of the CD and it was released commercially in 2009. Ashley released "Satisfied" when she was just 19 years old. She's released four studio album since 2009, along with her work as part of Pistol Annies.
I like "Satisfied" but it took a while to grow on me. It was an odd debut single though, I didn't think it would be a hit at all the first time I heard it. I still prefer her second single, "I Don't Want To."

Non-Rankdown Song Highlights:
I'm surprised I never included "Tiny Town" in the rankdown, so I figured I'd do one last non-rankdown highlight. Great songs. [/div][/quote] Too bad, "Tiny Town" probably would've probably made my top 10. Great song, she had some serious pipes. Came close so many weeks to charting on BB but never could break through. Was such a weird time because Tracy Byrd was also fighting to chart with his single "Tiny Town" (a very different, but also a great song). Shame neither song was able to chart (on BB at least).

surprised by the Tracy Lawrence love Same as I wouldn't have guessed he'd have two songs in the top 10. I think Tracy is another male artist that often gets overlooked here on Pulse if only because most of his hits came during the '90s. He had quite an impressive run between 1993 and 1997 as twelve of the fifteen singles released then peaked inside the top two with only one peaking outside of the top 5. His career really was at a high point, though, during 1994's I See It Now and 1996's Time Marches On eras. Unfortunately I think his personal life and demons upended his career in late 1997 and he was never quite able to recover from that. I know bboat11 has talked about doing a rankdown for him at some point down the road, so I think based on what we've seen here his material would likely be well received overall.

Booooooooo @ "Satisfied" JUST missing the top 10!
Still my favorite Ashley Monroe song. What a masterpiece! I've adored this since it's release, and after hearing it once I knew Ashley Monroe was going to be one of my all-time favorite artists and I was not wrong.

Kiss Me is solid and Tiny Town is great. She really got the voice.
Also 3/5 for my prediction. That's better than I thought lol
Randy Rogers defying every predictions and land in top 10 just like Rodeo Clown in New Country Releases rankdown though. I would be surprised if it is not #10 by now.
After that... 9. Tracy Lawrence - "Used to the Pain" 8. Mark Chesnutt - "A Hard Secret to Keep" 7. Julie Roberts - "Wake Up Older" 6. Reba - "You're Gonna Be" 5. Miranda Lambert - "Bring Me Down" 4. Rebecca Lynn Howard - "That's Why I Hate Pontiacs" 3. Tracy Lawrence - "If I Don't Make It Back" 2. Dixie Chicks - "Not Ready to Make Nice" 1. Terri Clark - "Damn Right"

Been wrong about most everything so far, but might as well take a swing at this.
10. Randy Rogers Band - "Kiss Me In the Dark" 9. Julie Roberts - "Wake Up Older" 8. Mark Chesnutt - "A Hard Secret to Keep" 7. Dixie Chicks - "Not Ready to Make Nice" 6. Tracy Lawrence - "Used to the Pain" 5. Rebecca Lynn Howard - "That's Why I Hate Pontiacs"
The top 4 seems rock solid, would be kind of surprised if any of these missed the top 5. 4. Reba - "You're Gonna Be" 3. Miranda Lambert - "Bring Me Down" 2. Terri Clark - "Damn Right" 1. Tracy Lawrence - "If I Don't Make It Back" (just going to will it into existence...)

87) "That's All I'll Ever Need" - I remember being shocked that Darryl and Jimmy didn't stay with Universal when Dreamworks closed as I thought they had enough success to keep on. I also remember thinking this would be a big hit when it came out because it sounded great and Jimmy had hit's on his first album. I guess Big Machine was still getting it's groove because I still don't quite get this one missing. (91)
86) "Good To Go" - My first introduction to Sarah Buxton who I love was on this song*! On top of that I actually really enjoyed John's debut album, some really great songs on there with this being my favorite. Jason Aldean's version is also good but having Sarah do the backing vocals here really sells it for me! (18) *Didn't realize she was on Cowboy Troy's song till later on.
85) "No Shame" - I don't think Jeff was made for the time he came around in, had he been releasing music even just a decade before I think he would've done much better. His two major label albums were strong and had a distinct style to them that I really miss. (60)
84) "Fighting For" - Sure it's more rock than country but this is still such a jam and easily imo their best single. I had already loved them at this point but this solidified just how much I did. (17)
83) "Hank" - Relistening to this right now I may have been a little harsh on my ranking, but I think what really just felt wrong with the song was "why use Hank", it felt shoehorned and I don't think I was ever really able to overcome that. (107)
82) "Kill Me Now" - I really like Danny's voice and both Rio Grande and Sweetwater Rain had some good songs so it's a shame neither took off for him. Wasn't meant to be I guess as Curb did release like 8 singles from him with only 2 charting. (78)
81) "Doin' It Right" - Steve is another I wish had been bigger than he was, I don't think I ever disliked a single he had, though this one is bottom for me. Still had a catchy melody and I really always love his voice. (99)

#10. Reba - "You're Gonna Be"
Total Points: 474 Average: 36.4 Year Released: August, 2005 Mediabase Peak: #28 Billboard Peak: #33 Rankings:bboat11 - 2 someguy - 5 Cody Wants Out... - 10 castleoblivion26 - 12 tim - 15 .indulgecountry - 17 LBTrocks - 22 gonecountry - 33 Darkest Hour - 36 kw9461 - 53 Kanenrá:ke - 77 sabre14 - 81 gardyfan - 111 Following: bigfan101"You're Gonna Be (Always Loved By Me)", shortened to "You're Gonna Be" for radio, was released as the first new single off Reba McEntire's #1's album in late August of 2005. It peaked at #28 on Mediabase in November. The song was written by Danny Orton and Dennis Matkowsky.
I like "You're Gonna Be" but just way too many other songs I liked more in this rankdown. It's not anything extraordinary from Reba but I was a bit surprised it fizzled out so quickly on the chart.

#9. Randy Rogers Band - "Kiss Me In The Dark"
Total Points: 458 Average: 35.2 Year Released: August, 2006 Mediabase Peak: #40 Billboard Peak: #43 Rankings:gonecountry - 1 tim - 4 Kanenrá:ke - 12 LBTrocks - 13 Darkest Hour - 17 sabre14 - 17 gardyfan - 28 .indulgecountry - 35 castleoblivion26 - 46 kw9461 - 65 someguy - 70 bboat11 - 74 Cody Wants Out... - 76 Following: bigfan101"Kiss Me In the Dark" was released as the first single for the Randy Rogers Band off Mercury Nashville in August of 2006. It was off their album Just a Matter of Time. The single peaked at #40 on Mediabase in early November. It was written by singer-songwriters Radney Foster and George Ducas.
The Randy Rogers Band first charted twice in 2005 independently and signed to Mercury Nashville soon after. They switched to MCA later with their days at Universal. In all, they charted seven singles at mainstream country radio and of course, have had great success in Texas.
This is my favorite song by the Randy Rogers Band and it's a shame because Universal never gave this a full-blown promotion, which was the case for a couple of their singles -- much like Universal South did with Cross Canadian Ragweed. Happy it at least made the top 40 on Mediabase. I love the music and production on this track, it's pretty close to perfection.

You're Gonna Be probably will not be my favorite Reba songs but she still sings it better than like over half of singers here. So Kiss Me In The Dark is higher than #10. Hello minor keys in country music lol (and I like minor keys). An interesting tidbit is that this is their most popular song on Spotify.

It peaked at #55 on Mediabase in February. The song was written by Brandy Clark, Mark Narmore and Liz Rose -- Narmore co-wrote the mega-hit, "That's Why I Love About Sunday" by Craig Morgan. This was supposed to be included on Howard's Alive and Well album but it was shelved.
The song was recorded at the same time by Amanda Wilkinson, who was a Canadian country artist on Universal South at the time, and previously of The Wilkinsons.
Awesome song and maybe my favorite single from Rebecca Lynn Howard. Stellar lyrics, production and music. I can't believe it did next to nothing at radio. This was also, I believe, the very first songwriting credit ever for Brandy Clark at country radio.

"Wake Up Older" took a few listens to appreciate for me when it came out. Great passion in the lyrics and I think Julie nailed the vocal performance. Gotta love brutally honesty lyrics. Great arrangement, too.

It peaked at #26 on Mediabase in early August. The song was written by Miranda and Travis Howard.
This might be Miranda's most forgotten single to average fans or radio listeners. Modest chart peak and it was before she broke out into the star she is today. Great song and I like the progression of the track. It was a slightly different in its arrangement than other singles at the time and honestly, I thought this was a risk as the sophomore single but it did admirably, especially since that summer was brutal for chart competition.

The Top 5:
Mark Chesnutt - "A Hard Secret to Keep"
Tracy Lawrence - "Used to the Pain"
Tracy Lawrence - "If I Don't Make It Back"
Dixie Chicks - "Not Ready to Make Nice"
Terri Clark - "Damn Right"
Not exactly sure when I'll finish but should be in the next 2 days or so.
Top 5 predictions are welcomes, as always.

OMG, Miranda leaving at #6 just made the entire top 5 MUCH more interesting!!!! I was like 90% sure that she would win this!!!! Dixie Chicks are the other super obvious winner here, so if they manage to miss out I will probably have a stroke! But I wouldn’t even be slightly upset about it because everything that’s left is so good!!!
Mark Chesnutt is the biggest outlier here imo, and Tracy’s UTTP is not far behind it. If it came down to Terri versus IIDMIB I would be in heaven, but I’m honestly still expecting The Chicks to run away with it.
Sorry I haven’t commented on any of the exciting reveals the last couple days! My computer died 🙈 I’ll do some catching up once it’s fixed!
