Fiddle and steel are two staple instruments in country and I adore both of them so I think I'm good. Harmonica isn't nearly as quintessential country as those two lol Just for the record, the use of the harmonica in country music dates back to the 1920s and I’d consider the two to be quite harmonious and quintessential. We can thank DeFord Bailey for that...

I hear harmonica in there too and I HATE harmonica. "Kerosene" slays! It's one of those songs that will simply never get old. That's one of the rare cases where the harmonica totally works for me! Its cuz I love the style and melody it's playing so much, not because I think the instrument itself sounds good. But I can promise you at least 95% of the time I hate all harmonica music. And when it's by itself... forget it! Piano by itself is beautiful. Harmonica by itself is death.

Damn, I'm a little upset I put "Sleep at Night" at #1 now because I was *this* close to swapping it with "Redhead." They're really neck-and-neck for me. I'm very happy to see it pull off another win for Caylee! A repeat offender! Lindsay Ell's song is heartbreakingly gorgeous tho so a well-deserved runner-up for sure.

The top two are both fantastic songs! "make you" is simply stunning, what a gorgeous song and vocal performance and the lyrics and Lindsay's story just make it all the more powerful. I'm glad no one outright tanked it (although tim was getting dangerously close lol) because what a masterpiece of a song. "Redhead" is such a jam! Not at all upset to see it win! Thanks for hosting again bboat11!

With "Redhead", Caylee Hammack becomes the first person to ever win more than one of these rankdowns! This also adds Queen Reba McEntire to the winner list for the first time. "Redhead" is a fun, high-energy song that has been making waves on Pulse since its release. In that sense it is a very fitting winner, and I hope it will be a song that gets a chance to go to radio sooner or later. That being said, "make you" would have been an amazing winner, because it would not have been quite so obvious. That song dropped last month along with Lindsay confessing to her fans for the first time that she has been raped twice when she was younger, and it is without a doubt the most emotional and heartbreaking song she has ever given us. I have heard Darkest Hour criticize her before for usually having undercooked melodies, and I kinda agree with that, but in this case she completely knocked it out of the park!! The artistic growth she has been showing us lately is truly a sight to behold. I am glad that we rewarded that growth here, and I am thrilled to see this one sneak its way into the next RotB rankdown at least!!!!

I no doubt underranked “make you” and knowing that she seems to be a favorite here on Pulse I think I need to give this song a closer listen myself. Of all the songs and artists I included for the female country artists of the 2010’s it is her song “Criminal” that I keep coming back around to. Not surprised by the win for “Redhead” and a much deserved one at that...this song is such a jam and likely would’ve been my top song had it not been for a few other additions. Thanks again, bboat11, and I’m looking forward to hearing what the month of August brought us.

so happy "Sleep At Night" missed the top 5, as I love the 5 that made it. Surprised for sure that Blake made it but I like the song so I'm happy with it. Very happy that "Waste of Lime" made it to the top 5 as I worried it would miss the top 10 altogether. The top 2 were my Top 2 and in the correct order. I love "make you" as it is just incredible. "Redhead", which should be her new single BTW, is just so much fun and Reba with Caylee sounds great! Great job hosting as always bboat11! Look forward to seeing the list of songs for August!

I thought Redhead and make you would not be this close. Thanks for bboat11 for hosting. I will see the August list and decide whether to suggest songs.

I, too, was torn about my #1 and almost swapped it out for Caylee. However, I'm mostly just thankful Pulse's eternal hard-on for Taylor didn't rob Caylee of her much deserved win!

Josh Turner's voice melts me every damn time. EVERY damn time. I'd argue he's the best male voice of the 21st century in country music, and certainly one of the best male country voices of all time. "Sleep at Night" missing the Top 5 was SHOCKING! What a song! I absolutely adore it and if I'd just be caught up on my personal chart already, it'd be charting as the second single from the album by now. I also LOVE that music video. "Heaven Down Here" has a message that I felt to my core. We really are in hell it seems and we could truly use a lot more Heaven down here. If God's got any love left it'd be greatly appreciated if it could rain down a little harder. Not to mention these vocals. I'm sad it's not in the Top 5 (I love Taylor but as you can see from my ranks I would've much preferred she either stay at #5 or stay out of the Top 5 altogether; I would've loved for Mickey to take her place), I stand by my #1 and I will FOREVER be bitter that (and I'm not gonna stop pointing this out either) Mickey Guyton, the only black woman signed to a major country label got less than 10 adds on release day. I know it's been stagnant for her, but Walker Hayes can get at least 10 on a faceless, vanilla pop beat with dense lyrics appreciating an era in music that could've called for the song to feature some damn fiddle and steel so you can NOT tell me Mickey Guyton couldn't get at least 10. Smells like racism AND sexism to me. Call it what it is! (also fearlessarrow she has an EP called "Bridges" out Friday, September 11. Six tracks and the three songs we've heard from her this year are half of the EP) "Waste of Lime" is a fun cute summer bop but I must admit after hearing it a couple times already, I'd checked the time to see when the song would end when I was listening to the list for this rankdown. Very VERY high burn rate for me unfortunately. I'm sure I'll come back to it tho; I just would've much preferred seeing a different song take the #4 spot. I already said my piece about miss "betty" when I said my piece about Mickey. I couldn't get into the song at first, and it's still not an absolute favorite track of mine off of folklore. That said, it has been growing on me and country Taylor is always a pleasant gift. But again, I would've preferred that at worst she stayed out of the Top 5 altogether. I would've gone with a much different Top 10 outcome overall (clearly ) but I must admit I'm not at all upset with this rankdown's Top 2. "make you" is a stunner vocally and especially lyrically. And it's heartbreaking as hell. I've never been sexually assaulted but I'm not without empathy, and I can't imagine the level of trauma she's managed to even remotely overcome. The bravery she displayed in sharing her story like this is awe-inspiring and I'm still wishing her continued success after her #1 with Brantley Gilbert. (Which btw seems like the only Brantley song I'll likely ever like, let alone tolerate) As for "Redhead," that's been on heavy rotation from the time it debuted on my chart! One of my favorite country tracks of 2020 thus far. The energy in infectious and of course Queen Reba is a nice addition! Can't wait to see how these two do in BotB 5! And congrats to Caylee on being the first artist to score a second win! Thanks for hosting bboat11 and here's to the August list! (TRULY the month slipped away into a moment in time; literally HOW is it September 2020)

As you can see from the trajectory graph, "betty" was a HUGE contender in this rankdown! Based on how it was performing, I 100% expected it to finish at either #1 or #2. Everybody except for 5 people put this in their top 10, with more than half of us putting it in our top 5!!! Two tanks from superdave3556 and LBTrocks were undoubtedly what sunk this song. Without those two people it would have likely finished at #1 with ease! At least "betty" still has another chance to end up in BotB/RotB when the folklore album rankdown happens. I'm eager to see if it can pull it off!!! I have to say it was not necessarily the song itself that kept me from ranking it higher, it is Taylor herself. As a member of the older generation, I remember well when she left country music. She didn't just venture into pop like Carrie Underwood or Dan + Shay, she completely abandoned country music. This is not something I can just forget about with the release of one country single (New Year's Day does not count as it was just watered down pop.) If she is serious about returning to country and releases more country singles, I will probably be a lot more forgiving in future rankdowns. As for the song itself, it is growing on me. It debuted in my personal top 40 this week (just don't expect it to go #1). I don't expect most of you to understand this, but that is the way I feel.

So you enjoy the song itself but decided to tank it because Taylor "abandoned" country music? Yeah. That makes a lot of sense. Did you know that every song on the four albums since Red, EVERY song, has its own acoustic/country version? Every song she makes is very much country at its core before the production. Also, if she'd abandoned country music, "Better Man" would've stayed in her masters catalog to rot once Scooter stole her masters. "Babe" also wouldn't have been released. She wouldn't have released "New Year's Day" and she wouldn't have sent "betty" here if she'd abandoned country music. She wouldn't have gone back to the Bluebird Cafe in 2018 (might've been 2019) had she abandoned country music. She knows her roots, and they're still at the core of her artistry imo.

Woooow it's great to see Blake ending up in top 5 - that's one of the nicest surprises in the recent rankdowns. I like this song a lot and I also like the majority of songs he released ever since he's together with Gwen.
The other song I like a lot is Waste of Lime - it's fun and catchy; just perfect for summertime
I was surprised I liked betty so much - the harmonica is perfect. Lyrics are not my cup of tea but I still like the song overall.
Redhead winning is the perfect ending of this rankdown - Go Reba!

Would you rather have had Taylor pull a Sam Hunt and just continue to release mostly pop music to country radio? You’re entitled to your opinion, but Taylor obviously respected the genre enough to leave as her music became pop (and rejected her label’s insistence on adding a fiddle to “Shake It Off” and sending it to country radio) so I’m just not sure what your reasoning is...

Does Lainey Wilson just release a new song every month? Jesus. She announced back in like March that she would be releasing 4 new songs over the next 4 months to give her fans a treat during the pandemic! Although for some reason she released two, took a month off, and now has released two more. I think the middle month coincided with her announcing "Things A Man Oughta Know" as a single or something. She was not in the June rankdown. So it actually ended up being 4 songs in 5 months. I almost forgot about this one because I don't think it's as good as any of the others have been, but I figured we've already done 3 of the 4, we might as well do the last one

I have not done any reminders for this one yet, and I feel as if I should probably do so We're kinda light on participants, which is probably like 80% my fault. I would have done a reminder a week ago if my laptop hadn't been out of commission. There is just under a week and a half left until the deadline, folks! I look forward to seeing how these results look as more of you are able to join in :) There really are a lot of great songs from last month!

I've been steadily working on this over the past two weeks and I have to say this might be the strongest group of songs we've had thus far. I wouldn't say there is one particular song that is necessarily a standout for me a la last months "This Town is a Woman", but overall I've found something to like in about each one (except for my last place).
