40. True - Concrete BlondeI like that this band covered different rock styles. I seem to enjoy their harder stuff. This one does have an open road vibe, but instead of rolling in a Ford Mustang it feels more like a Ford Festiva. 39. Living in a Dream - Pseudo Echo Top 40 Nice job. I love this band. They got a hold of one disco classic "Funky Town" and made a whole album of songs from it. The NRG here is off the chart. It doesn't slow down for minute. If you can't hang on Jump off and let others enjoy the ride. Also Their version of "Funky Town" would have been my #3 song. 38. A Million Things - The Lucy ShowThis band was a great discovery for me. This one was great, but I loved the other one so much more. Glad it comes out on top. 37. Right Here - The Go-BetweensThe first preview didn't sound so bad, but the more I listened to it the sillier it started to sound. I could have stopped at one preview and left it in the 70's range, but it was just started to sound like one big never ending fart. 36. All in My Mind - Love and RocketsThis band will usually fall in my 70's range. I just don'r get the hype. This one almost sounds like Modern Rock mixed with Country. A weird combo. 35. Hourglass - SqueezeThis one is really fun. A big ass fun filled brass party. 34. April Skies - The Jesus and Mary ChainNever heard this before, but it was good enough to crack my top half. It's like a better Love & Rockets song. Definitely has better vocals. 33. New Message - The Lucy Show This is me sticking my favorite first time listen from this rank down in the top 10. I absolutely adore that synth beat in the background. Takes the song into Hi-NRG territory. The rest of the song screams 80's production in all the right places. 32. World Shut Your Mouth - Julian CopeMan we are getting rid of all the great fun first time listens. Gotta love the way that chorus strikes up the melody factor. 31. New Direction - Echo & The BunnymenGreat placement for this one. Perfect late 80's Modern Rock jam. I knew "Lips Like Sugar" would come out ahead. Not complaining tho. 30. Ship of Fools - World PartyThis one was pretty good. Just one slot shy of my top 40. Great chorus, and falls more or less where I peaked it too. Tone wise I think Michael Hutchence could have boost it up a bit. 29. Wasteland - The MissionI originally had this one at #8 which would have made me its sole top 10 ranker. I dropped it a bit right before I submitted. I figured My Cult song had similar vocals and gave the slot to another song. Still Fricking epic song. 28. Ages of You - R.E.M.I definitely ranked this one higher than one of the other R.E.M. songs. maybe both of them? I forget, but this was one huge uptempo First time listen to me. 27. Experiment IV - Kate BushHer vocals do not get me on board, but the music here was passable. This is at least better than one of those Susana Vega songs. 26. Earn Enough for Us - XTCLyrically Modern Rock songs didn't strike up any matches for me, but I dug the music. This wasn't exactly a first time listen, but probably the first time I hear it in over 20+ years. Forgot how uptempo it was.

Only 1 familiar song in this group! 40. True (58): I under-ranked this song. The melody has come back to me several times after submitting the RD, and I can see that after couple more listens I could've ranked it in my top 40. Pleasant vocals and guitar-based, melodic rock. 39. Living in a Dream (46): Very nice synthpop discovery with good melody and enough guitar for Modern Rock. 38. A Million Things (76): On paper, I should've really liked this band, as their songs had the type of melodic sound that usually appeals to me. However, I felt their melodies were a bit too generic and half-cooked. Like I'm sure I've heard this type of melody before in better songs 37. Right Here (65): Idem. 36. All My Mind (52): As has happened with other L&R songs, it took me a few listens but in the end the production and melody captured me. I'm now interested in checking more songs from them. **35. Hourglass (35): Super catchy with good music and vocals. This made my personal top 20 back in the day, and I've grown to like it better with time. 34. April Skies (56): Slightly under-ranked this. Should've had it at least 10+ spots higher. Nice melody. 33. New Message (66): Similar to AMT, although both the production and the melody were stronger. I admit I could've ranked it 20+ spots higher with more patience, as the music sounds better now that I've heard it again after several days. 32. World Shut Your Mouth (34): Quite catchy, hi energy, with good instrumental: good combination 31. New Direction (51): The annoying background vocals in the pre-chorus took it down a few notches to me. Otherwise, it would've been in my top 40. 30. Ship of Fools (44): The retro-inspired chorus is the best part. The eclectic instrumentation is another big plus. 29. Wasteland (64): Another case of a song that I was supposed to like, but in the end the electronic sound felt a bit too plastic, fake to me, and didn't convince me. Stronger synth and drums would've made me rank it much higher. 28. Ages of You (22): GREAT discovery! My second favorite actually! Simple but honest and effective instrumental, with catchy melody is a great recipe to me. 27. Experiment IV (47): Even though the melody is a bit messy, her vocals, and especially the production and musicality more than make up for it. 26. Earn Enough for Us (69): Not bad, but the melody is just a bit messy going to different places especially in the chorus, and the instrumental doesn't mitigate that weakness. So far, I've tried to like their songs -as I loved Pumpkin Head- but none have lived up to my expectations.... it's the opposite to Love & Rockets

EXTARS:(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (To Party) - Beastie BoysThere is a sort of Guitar vibe here that stops me from clicking away from the song before it ends, but the vocals are still a hard task to stomach. 10,000 Maniacs - Peace TrainNot too terrible. This one kind of reminded me of a couple of Cock Robin's songs. They were also from the '87-'89 eras. Similar vibes in the music. Only it didn't have the vocals of Peter and Anna. The Godfathers - This Damn NationUptempo hard driving alternative Rock. It's fine. This band didn't have much variety in their songs did they? The Golden Palominos - DiamondPoor Woman's 10,000 Maniacs. Not what I was into that year. The Mighty Lemon Drops - The Other Side of YouI can't for the life of me recall this band's hit, but this sounded a whole lot better than that one. I'm pretty sure their 90's stuff didn't sound this "Love Her Madly" great. Faith No More - We Care a LotIdk what this band was trying to do, but I really hated their sound. You got what sounds like wanna be Hair Metal riffs and shout outs, and a funky bassline, but with one of the worst vocal deliveries imaginable. Just awful to me ears. Cocteau Twins - CrushedPULSE really seems to loves this band. I think they have great vocal abilities, nice aesthetic big 80's production, but lack NRG and to some point authentic melody to the songs. The vocals keep me intrigued. Guadalcanal Diary - Litany (Life Goes On) All of these except "We care A Lot" have been first time listens. This one has good Modern Rock adrenaline. Sounds like something that could have cruised on over to mainstream Rock? The Mighty Lemon Drops - Out of HandDefinitely better than their 90's stuff. This one has strong Smiths/Morrisey vibes. Could have easily been a favorite first time listen in the RD. Chris Isaak - You Owe Me Some Kind of Love I wasn't a big fan of his big hit. This one is a tad more thrilling as far as music is concerned but doesn't do that much more. Wire - Ahead name of this band sounds familiar. I'm pretty sure we have ranked songs from them. This one has some darkwave vibes. That's always a plus when it comes to Modern Rock. The Dead Milkmen- Instant Club Hit (You'll Dance to Anything)Big stretch from "Punk Rock Girl". Nice percussion, but Terrible vocal travesty. Aztec Camera - Deep Wide and TallI knew I would like this one from the first few notes. The bass takes to Sophistipop glory. Very pleasant with a soft melodic groove. Winter Hours - Waiting for the ThunderI don't recall ranking this band. Maybe it was because it was live, but this sounded awful. A complete rip off "Beat's So Lonely". You can hear it in the chorus. Camper Van Beethoven- Good Guys and Bad GuysThis sounds like something the majority on PULSE would really like. It doesn't do much for me musically nor vocally. Hunters & Collectors - Inside a FireballAnother rather boring Alternative Rock single that I would tank on both this and mainstream RD's. That Petrol Emotion - Genius MoveThis song is very bad. Melody is worth for shit when you don't know how to use it. Ramones - Wanna LiveI mean it's The Ramones, but WTF was this?. "Give Give Live Live" rinse repeat. Damn this is some lazy song writing here, and those Bruce Springsteen synths do not fit the Ramones. I'm glad we didn't rank this, cuz it kinda sucked royally. This coming from PULSE's biggest Ramones fan too, but it's true this song is doggy doo. See I can rhyme too. Billy Bragg- Greetings to the New BrunetteThis is somewhat better than that last Ramones song. Actually it has a nice melody I 'm just not convinced by those vocals. Flesh for Lulu - I Go CrazyI'm surprised this one misses the cut. Would have been really high on my list. Maybe side by side with Gene Loves Jezebel. 10,000 Maniacs - Hey Jack KerouacMusic isn't so bad, and her performance is rather enticing, but that's about it.

And now we reach the extras that didn't fit into any of the prior categories of extras. I'll spoiler out me babbling on about these artists. -The Icicle Works are only remembered over here for their sublime 1984 top 40 hit "Birds Fly (Whisper to a Scream)" - we'll be ranking it on Mainstream Rock that year. They had a buuuuunch of songs chart in their native UK, but only one of those ("Love Is a Wonderful Colour") even made the top 50. "Understanding Jane" was their second biggest hit there, reaching #52. -Killing. Goddamn. Joke. Sigh. Would be a pretty easy top 10 for me, as with just about everything they've ever made. -The highest of multiple The Damned charters this year is the title track off what seems to be frequently regarded as their worst album. -The legendary Paisley Underground scene gets some representation here with The Three O'Clock. I believe we'll be ranking them with "Her Head's Revolving" if we reach 1985 Alt. -The Colourfield was a side project of The Specials/Fun Boy Three lead singer Terry Hall. "Running Away" is a Sly & The Family Stone cover. -Speaking of legendary 80s alt scenes - you won't see them mentioned too much nowadays, but Love Tractor were one of many players in the Athens, GA scene. Heck, R.E.M.'s drummer Bill Berry was briefly among their members. -We ranked "No Stars" not too long ago on Troy's 80s Underground Rankdown, where it landed in the top 5. Wonder how it would have performed surrounded by lots of much more popular fare. -Glam punk cult heroes Redd Kross made a prior extra appearance with "Annie's Gone" in 1990 Alt. "Love Is You" hails from arguably their most popular album, Neurotica. -Spoons were another big name in 80s CanCon. "Bridges Over Borders", however, was a complete flop in their native land. -The Washington Squares were an NYC-based folk revival trio whose members already had plenty of credibility in various areas of the music underground. -Here we get to witness k.d. lang several years before her mainstream breakout, when she was just leading the country/rockabilly band The Reclines. This song also happened to be produced by an artist that actually made the cut here, Dave Edmunds. -New wave legends Oingo Boingo have gotten the shaft as extras plenty of times by now. But surely we'll be ranking at least one of "Weird Science", "Dead Man's Party" and "Just Another Day" soon...right?
