🤷 I like the Furs because their songwriting always has those special little touches unique to them, but I couldn't find anything like that with HB--sounds like a song anyone could've made

welp I don't dislike this song or anything (in fact I...actually ranked it top 20 on its Hot 100 list?) but it comes off as a bit hokey to me. 12

On to better things on Mainstream Rock, hopefully. Despite this being my lowest song left (yet it's still in my top 20 lmao) it's about the closest thing left to an underdog if you ask me so I was definitely hoping it would make it into this pretty boring top 10. :-\ 11

Darn, I was thinking #11 was going to be Crazy. And it was so close to the top 10 too. Weird that Electric Blue wasn't in the Alt rankdowns.

Even though everything's in my top 40, I do hope someone found it in them to tank NYT and Strangelove. I predict Just Like Heaven or True Faith wins.

25. Solitude Standing - Suzanne VegaI was much much nicer to the other one. Never heard this, and I didn't like the musical composition is followed. Nothing at all happened. No ups and downs. boring. 24. You Are the Girl - The CarsFirst I don't know how far back we are going on alt and rock RDs. There are less and less members playing, so I wasn't gonna lose my chance on putting my favorite music band ever at #1. Truthfully my #2 song peaked higher than this one on my actual charts, but i also rank according to music videos which are the image of the song and back then just as important. This like All The Cars videos is wacky fun. As far as the song itself. it's perfect Ric Ocasek lyrics. He sang about woman. Many a times unatainable women or "object of desire". The music created by this band was a wave of melodic perfection. Everything fell in its place. The key,s percussion, vocals, guitars and this particular song had Benjamin Orr fire in the bassline. Incredibly enough the band was already going through major creative differences while production of this album was taking place. You can hear that in almost all the other tracks, but this song got it right if only for one last time. In many ways its there swan song as an original band, and yes it's my #1 song. I say #24 is a hell of a great showing on a list of songs that clearly were far from the big 80's production sounds. Even members who don't flip over the 80's gave this song a pretty decent ranking. For me this is especially a positive sign of what's to come for the 80's Cars classics. 23. Why Can't I Be You? - The Cure"weaker cure song" my ass. This is a monster of a song. Sure this has Katrina & The Waves vibes. Great comparison btw, but the Cure was never intentionally just a gothic emo sad band. That's a misconception. They have another side to their discography with many uptempo songs. "Love Cats', Inbetween Days", "Close To You" etc.. This is my actual preferred vibe for them. The only thing I can't believe is that wheatsquares33 actually beat me to the high rank. two monster tracks side by side. 22. Learning to Fly - Pink FloydMy #79 rank here is a pretty high rank for a Pink Floyd song. The song isn't bad by any means. Nice femal backups ,and not boring at all. Also it doesn't force me to sit through 7 minutes of Pink Floyd progressive style rock. , but it's also not something I would go out of my way to save. I'm not sure if I'll rank this song this high on Mainstream tho. maybe around the same range. If its lucky? 21. Painted Moon - The SilencersA first time listen for me. Finished just outside my top 50. I would consider this a good uptempo song with great 80's production. Lyrically nothing happens, but I liked the musical composition of it. 20. Shoplifters of the World Unite - The SmithsI definitely liked this one way more than "Girlfriend.....". and it's all because the guitars remind me of "How Soon Is Now". Also I didn't recall hearing this in many years, so it was a very nice rediscovery. 19. Girlfriend in a Coma - The SmithsSuch a wonderful melody. easy top 30 for me. This rank must have been very close. I prefer these two to the R.E.M songs, but that is probably just me? 18. The Ledge - The ReplacementsI liked the other song a whole lot more. This one was decent, and truthfully I hunger for music like this in today's chart, but on this list of songs it kinda didn't live up to the 80's greatness. 17. (I Just) Died In Your Arms - Cutting CrewOne of the few 80's sophistipop wonders that missed my top 10 on this list. This also appears on mainstream which I think fits even less, but still a monster among that list of songs. Btw this one and their other hit "I've Been In Love Before" were top 20 hits on my personal chart. 16. This Wheel's on Fire - Siouxsie & The Banshees Another of this band's songs that I didn't recall, but sound spectacular among this list. especially after viewing this top of the pops performance. makes the whole thing so much tastier. However this does make one wonder? How the F U C K is this out before "Luka"? 15. Rain in the Summertime - The AlarmI don't need the Alarm sounding like U2 filler material. I reserve my right to upgrade their songs from the early 80's much much higher. 14. It's the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine) - R.E.M.So I did rank this one the highest of the three. I always dug the craziness of this song. 13. Heartbreak Beat - The Psychedelic FursRichard Butler took this one to crown level with his vocal delivery. As we dive deeper into the 80's there will be a lot of strong competition so this might be the highest I rank the band. I'm glad I took the highest rank to. The extended version of this was also a huge top 100 hit on KPWR's top 106 of 1987. Right up there with Stevie B. and Cover Girls. Kinda just like my YE chart. 12. Big Time - Peter GabrielThis is a bit Hokey. Another good comparison, but it's another level of hokey greatness. The music video also adds more silly layers to it, but makes it even more fun. The song kinda overcomes itself in its own brand of silly fun/ It's also impossible not to fit this into the top 50 if you love big 80's production sounds. 11. Crazy - IcehouseA very deserving top 15 song on this list. Big sophistipop sounds with layers of instruments. Heartfelt lyrics but not cheesy and stellar vocals. This sould have taken "luka's position in the top 10. Just saying.

A lot of this songs and extras appeared on KPWR's top 106 of '87. KPWR or The Power was born from the popularity of Dance music in the late 80's. Genres like Funk, Hi- NRG, R&B and especially Freestyle made up their playlist. This was also the biggest year for Freestyle and Hi-NRG so these Modern Rock/pop crossovers jams are among a spectacular list of songs. Truthfully aside from MTV this was my source of radio music. So as an extra I'll post to some of the numbers the Modern Rock songs scored on the list. i have the entire list if anyone is interested/ 97. Heartbreak Beat - Psychedelic Furs 91. Oh Yeah - Yellow 90. Comon baby let's Go - Los Lobos 81. When Smokey Sings - ABC 77. Big Love - Fleetwood Mac (we'll run into this on mainstream) 71. It's A Sin - Pet Shop Boys 68. Something In My House - Dead Or Alive 67. I Heard A Rumor - Bananarama 63. Lessons In Love - level 42 61. Funky Town - Pseudo Echo 60. Telephone Line - Kraftwerk 52. Strange Love - Depeche Mode 34. Brass Monkey - Beastie Boys 31. Bizzare Love Triangle - New Order (from '88) 19. Money Money - Billy Idol 1. La Bamba - Los Lobosthe ultimate party jam of 1987

It would have been something if "Big Time" was Gabriel's first top ten appearance. I'm not particularly a fan of it being his best performance so far, but I imagine he'll be topping that before too long...I hope, anyway.
The top ten is great and makes me regret not submitting a little less.

Red told me it's OK to step in and present the top 10 preview, so here we go!
- This is the first top 10 for The Replacements and Echo & the Bunnymen. Both bands debuted in 1991, but The Replacements have racked up more entries and closer calls to the top 10 than The Bunnymen to this point.
- This is the second top 10 for Suzanne Vega, although on her previous entry she shared credit with remixers DNA for 1990's #7 "Tom's Diner". Funnily enough, the original version of said song is track 1 on the album whose singles we ranked this year.
- In all of U2's enormous number of chances, this is only their second top 10 appearance. The first was with "Desire", a #4 in 1988 Active. One must imagine "WOWY" gives the Fightin' Bonos a fair chance to reach a new peak.
- This is XTC's third top 10 in 6 attempts--a considerably impressive ratio, even though the band's prior two appearances were simply "The Mayor of Simpleton" doing the double in 1989. That song reached, again, #4 on Active--can "Dear God" do even better?
- New Order has also made 3 top 10s now--and not just in 6 attempts, but 6 different songs. They're also the first of four bands we're examining who have won one of these rankdowns before, as "Regret" was the crown song of the 1993 Alt game. "True Faith" has its sights set on being their second winner.
- The Cure continues to contend, as they notch their 4th top 10. Last time they got this high, their songs occupied the #2 and #1 slots of 1989 Alt ("Lovesong" being the winner). They can't do the exact same thing this year, but "Just Like Heaven" seems equipped to at least battle for first place.
- This is R.E.M.'s 6th top 10. One of those appearance's was "Losing My Religion"'s winning run in 1991 Alt, and two more were their most recent dual treks into the top 4 (on Alt and Active) for "Orange Crush" in 1989. So "The One I Love" doesn't have much to prove for the band, but it has to be seen as a favorite anyway.
- INXS took their time to find their footing, but since 1990 Active they've now scored 6 top 10s. Their best placement remains "Suicide Blonde"'s #2 in the aforementioned 90 Active game, and on Alt, they haven't made it past #10 yet. "Need You Tonight" won the 1988 Hot 100 rankdown, so it winning here is not out of the question.
- We first ranked Depeche Mode in 2013, and across 27 years, they've never placed in the bottom 50, and in fact have now made the top 10 7 times. Their best achievement was, similar to The Cure, claiming the top 2 in 1990 Alt with "Policy of Truth" and (the winner) "Enjoy the Silence". With all that prestige, this is a band you can never count out as a #1 contender.

And here it is...the last set of extras. Included here are a top 10 UK hit from British sophisti-pop band The Blow Monkeys (we should be ranking them in 1986), yet another high-ranking entry off of Troy's 80s Underground Rankdown in "White Coats", three different songs from Australian garage rockers The Lime Spiders, Paul Weller's post-The Jam group The Style Council, 80s alt-rock legends Hüsker Dü with the lead single off their final album (they should make their Alt RD debut in 1986), Boston cowpunk band Scruffy the Cat, British post-punk band The Comsat Angels, Japan frontman David Sylvian, another Boston-based alt band in Dumptruck (they'll likely also be in 1986), and a Stones cover by goth band The March Violets. The only two extras I recognize here are "White Coats" and "Could You Be the One?" - both would be no lower than my top 15. Artist | Song | YE# | Peak | Video | The March Violets | Miss Amanda Jones | #102 | #12 | | Dumptruck | Going Nowhere | #105 | #12 | | The Lime Spiders | Just One Solution | #107 | #12 | | The Lime Spiders | Weirdo Libido | #108 | #13 | | David Sylvian | Orpheus | #113 | #13 | | The Comsat Angels | The Cutting Edge | #114 | #13 | | Scruffy the Cat | Mybabyshe'sallright | #118 | #14 | | Hüsker Dü
| Could You Be the One? | #122 | #14 | | The Style Council | Heavens Above | #128 | #14 | | The Lime Spiders | My Favorite Room | #130 | #15 | | New Model Army | White Coats | #136 | #16 | | The Blow Monkeys | It Doesn't Have to Be This Way | #137 | #17 | |

They have much stronger singles in future RDs, they can win then, leave this year to the bands at the top of their game man
