What if radio gets recalibrated again this week like it has the past two weeks? Because I feel like if that happens, that may give "ROCKSTAR" the edge over "Savage" this week. I guess we'll see. 1) If they don't recalibrate, Rockstar is the favorite. 2) If they recalibrate and audience falls again, Rockstar is almost guaranteed to reach #1. 3) If they recalibrate and audience goes up by a few millions, Savage is the favorite. 4) If they recalibrate and audience goes up by a huge amount, Blinding Lights is the favorite. Crazy week.

I wonder what's gonna be the next number one on radio. Of the Top 5, only Intentions has yet to peak I think it is probably safe to say that Blinding will be #1 there the remainder of the month and a good part of July, unless it starts dropping soon and/or something really grows quickly.

Billboard Top 10 from 35, 30, 25, and 20 years ago: June 10, 200001 01 Maria Maria - Santana feat. The Product G&B (10th and final week at #1)02 02 You Sang To Me - Marc Anthony 03 04 Thong Song - Sisqo 04 03 Breathe - Faith Hill 05 06 Be With You - Enrique Iglesias 06 08 Try Again - Aaliyah 07 11 The Real Slim Shady - Eminem 08 07 Everything You Want - Vertical Horizon 09 12 Oops!...I Did It Again - Britney Spears 10 09 I Try - Macy Gray This is a legendary week for chart nerds. Maria Maria got its 10th week at #1 despite being only #8 on Physical Sales and #7 on Radio Songs - probably the weakest metrics performance for a #1 in Hot 100's history. I'm not sure if it was the weakest #1 of all-time by chart points, but it's certainly close to that. With Oops!...I Did It Again at its #9 peak based on airplay alone this would have been a perfect week for Britney Spears to release the physical CD of Oops... and snatch her second #1 hit.

Savage vs Rockstar for #1, I'd like for Savage to score another week, let's take a break from one week #1s! Rockstar can hit #1 next.

June 17, 199505 NE Scream - Michael & Janet Jackson The ultimate proof that a superstar collaboration doesn't guarantee a smash hit. It's hard to believe Janet & MJ at the height of their celebrity status would miss #1, let alone top 3 altogether. It also had even the 'most expensive music video ever' hyping it. The fact it also did badly at radio, and peaked at #20 on Top 40 altogether is even more surprising. More times than not a superstar collab fails to meet success expectations most people have actually. (Mariah/Whitney, Taylor/Ed, Beyonce/Eminem, Cardi B/Post Malone, Madonna/Britney, etc) You can look at it that way, but at the time, it was the first song of the 90's and perhaps since the Beatles of the 60's to debut that high on the charts, which was very impressive. The collaboration was a big surprise to many as MJ was going through rough times with his public image and then to follow up with his debut at #1, a few weeks later, even had its own controversies as well surrounding the video and timing of release. Considering what was happening, not getting number #1 was not a disappointment, but it was a sad time IMO. It was like a struggle with the media and public, he faced.

This is super interesting thanks for sharing! It's interesting that the next week, "Try Again" jumps 6-1 and becomes the first single to reach #1 solely on airplay. I guess the 2000s summer charts were just really weak?

Considering what was happening, not getting number #1 was not a disappointment, but it was a sad time IMO. It was like a struggle with the media and public, he faced. THIS! I remember the era vividly and most of the U.S mainstream media was far from Michael Jackson’s supporters at the time. When the “HIStory” era and “Scream” was announced, people were calling into radio stations and asking DJ’s to not play any of his upcoming music nor add them to their playlists because he was a “pedophile” and shouldn’t be granted any success. There were also religious groups petitioning for people to not purchase his upcoming albums. Evan Chandler (the accusers Father) was still speaking out, despite being paid a settlement and the case being closed, and asking people to boycott him. His ‘Child Molestation’ controversy was still extremely fresh in most people’s mind. The point of superstar collaborations not always succeeding is definitely valid, however what did surprise me about “Scream’s” performance (or lack thereof) is that it failed to crossover to R&B radio which I assumed would be a given especially as Janet Jackson was on the song. Her song “Runaway”, which was released only two months later, was a big success there. That said, “You Are Not Alone” was a radio success and remained his last big radio success in the U.S. What also helped aid that songs performance is the fact that it was written and produced by R.Kelly (who, of course, was huge at the time) which the Black media, especially, spoke out about. It gave the era new life.

June 13, 197001 10 The Long And Winding Road - The Beatles (1st of 2 weeks at #1)02 02 Which Way You Goin' Billy - The Poppy Family 03 01 Everything Is Beautiful - Ray Stevens 04 06 Get Ready - Rare Earth 05 03 Love On a Two Way Street - The Moments 06 05 Cecilia - Simon & Garfunkel 07 07 The Letter - Joe Cocker 08 04 Up Around The Bend / Run Through The Jungle - Creedence Clearwater Revival 09 09 Make Me Smile - Chicago 10 15 The Love You Save - The Jackson 5 "The Long And Winding Road" was the Beatles' 20th and final #1 song on the Hot 100. Today, 50 years later, no other artist has managed to match or surpass the 20 #1's that the Beatles amassed between February 1964 and June 1970. As the years and decades pass, it seems less and less likely that any other artist ever will. The Beatles 20 #1 hits on the Hot 100: 01. I Want To Hold Your Hand -1964 02. She Loves You-1964 03. Can't Buy Me Love-1964 04. Love Me Do-1964 05. A Hard Day's Night-1964 06. I Feel Fine-1964 07. Eight Days A Week-1965 08. Ticket To Ride-1965 09. Help!-1965 10. Yesterday-1965 11. I’m speaking it into existence; the divas shall prevail! 🙌🏿🙌🏿🙌🏿 P.S: Paul McCartney has 29 #1’s if we include his overall discography. Now, he’s NEVER being surpassed. ☠️

Both artists have peaked and it seems unlikely that there are any many more #1's in their future.
Mariah only needs 1 more but has not had a #1 with a new song in 12 years
Rihanna has 14 and only needs 6 more but has only had 1 #1 in 7 years.

Rihanna's ANTI era was very successful. 1 #1 (Work) and 2 top 10 songs (Love On The Brain and Needed Me) + 2 top 3 collabs (Wild Thoughts and This Is What You Came For). When all is said and done, I think she'll be at 16 or 17 #1s.

LOL was commenting on the likelihood of SIX MORE #1's - not whether or not any album was successful or not.
6 more seems unliklely in my opinion

Britney Spears has six No. 1s at pop radio (including "Oops...), which is an important outlet for her (and other mainstream-oriented acts). #Hot100NotBeAllEndAll :)
As for "Scream"- the subject matter/aggressive nature of the song probably didn't help the cause. Had it been a joyous, pure-fun dance track, it may have done better. At top 40 radio, it just barely made the top 20.

Yea considering YANA did so well, I think Scream was just regarded as a difficult song for radio, similar to Me Against the Music 8 years later.

We all know how successful that era was for Carey as well as “E=MC2” and she was in her middle-to-late 30’s at the time. Rihanna is only 32. If Rihanna is still interested in playing the chart game with her future releases then she will easily score more number ones in the future. I would’ve said her surpassing Carey on the Hot 100 was definitely possible five years ago but not so much now, albeit FENTY has a habit of surprising us. I’m hoping she finishes at 17 #1’s at least. 🙏🏿

Definitely one of my favorites! At the time, I remember people believing that The Hills would be a minor hit overshadowed by CFMF, which many people believed would spend 10+ weeks at #1 and be the big hit of the fall of 2015. The Hills ended up being the bigger hit, spending 6 weeks at #1 and 42 weeks overall in the Top 25, a very rare feat for the time period. (I believe Uptown Funk was the only other song to spend 40+ weeks in the Top 25 in 2015/2016.)
