tied with Team Big Bird we have...14. The Steel Porcupines (@humanshazam & House Lannister)Overall Score: 70 | Detour Rank: #14 | Roadblock Rank: #12Detour Results:(Language Ace)Judge's Thoughts:Nick: this one is also a jam! I like how big the chorus feels, and the guitar based verses are also very nice! I also really love the singer’s voice (8.8)Samo: Probably my favourite of the two foreign-language rock songs here, with enough variety in the song's instrumental that I didn't even notice how long it was at first! I don't think I like the vocals here as much as Pink's, but it's the better song overall. (7.4)Juan Carlos: This is a Spanish song, but it was the first time I listened to it. I was looking some information about the band and I've seen that Enrique Bunbury was part of it. Either way, the song is fine and I like how it's rock-driven. (7.3)Hamed: I really like the production on this, it sounds vaguely familiar for some reason but I got no clue why. It's an enjoyable listen, I probably wouldn't listen to it again on my own, but of it came on I wouldn't mind it. (8.1)fearlessarrow: The first two songs here are making me think this would’ve worked better for the judges that are judging the roadblock, lol. It’s solid, but from the guitar work to vocals I think I preferred “Pink” slightly (which is the other rock foreign-language song in here). (7.8)Overall Score: 39.4Roadblock Results:(Sent by shazam)Judge's Thoughts:Nick: bop! this is probably in my top 3 from Emotion, and has been one of the things I’ve returned to the most over the past couple months. the verses build up so nicely to that absolute monster of a chorus. pop perfection here ~ (9.9)
Samo: The lyrical concept of hijacking someone is slightly odd, but literally everything else about this makes it a perfect pop song, and one of Carly’s best. Seriously, those melodies in the bridge are some of my favourites I’ve ever heard. Between the rock songs in Language Ace and this, it’s unfortunate that the rotating judges ended up where they did, but this will hopefully still do well. (10)
jamesflame: I dreaded doing this. I haven't hidden the fact that I just don't find CRJ all that interesting and... this song is no different. I tried to give it a chance to click and it just hasn't. CRJ can sing, her production isn't bad, and I know she's capable of making good music, like Run Away With Me and I Really Like You for example, but most of the songs I hear in these Pulse games are just painfully generic and just do nothing for me. I don't hate it, but it just isn't a song I'll ever come back to. (4.7)
Geometrical: The chorus, which is good, saves this, because otherwise, this sounds like every other Carly Rae Jepsen song out there. I’m a sucker for a good bassline and a good synth beat - which this song has, and which several of her songs have - but this brings nothing new to the table. The songwriting is not as lazy as on several of her other songs, but it’s still just average. (6.0)
Overall Score: 30.6
you two sent some pretty solid songs, but ended up getting really unlucky with the judges who ended up with you, causing you to land down here. but, you're still in the race, and will have a +0.2 bonus next round

barely escaping elimination we have...15. Canadeam (matteeeb & lyhom )Overall Score: 69.8. | Detour Rank: #13 | Roadblock Rank: #13Detour Results:(Crowded Space)Judge's Thoughts:Nick: I remember this was always one of my least favorites from Funk Waves, but I think that’s changed now haha. this one’s just a jam through and through. I especially like DRAM’s part at the end, it’s so chilled out and nice. great track! (8.1)Samo: The groove here does a lot to elevate an otherwise okay song that works well enough for what it’s trying to do, but it’s not that interesting outside of DRAM’s performance. (7.2)Juan Carlos: This is good and I enjoy it every time I listen to Funk Wav Bounces, Vol.1. ScHoolboy Q, PARTYNEXTDOOR and DRAM complement each other really well in Calvin Harris' vibey production. (7.8)Hamed: Oooh I love this one, probably my favorite on the album in the long run with Faking It. Calvin delivers a funky summery catchy production, everyone delivers really good verses and ride on that production. A really fun track, I kinda wish this always was a single from the album. (8.4)fearlessarrow: Funk Wav Bounces, Vol. 1 was one of my favorite albums from that year - it was a solid collection of funk-influenced music. I don’t think I can give anything from that album a low score - now “Cash Out” isn’t among my top favorites from the album and the vocals in the chorus isn’t the type of vocals that are my favorite but the production makes up for it for me. (8.0)Overall Score: 39.5Roadblock Results:(Sent by lyhom)Judge's Thoughts:Nick: this is probably my favorite Ariana single. it’s very bouncy and is a solid feel good track. Mac Miller totally kills his parts, and the chorus is a bop! (8.7)Samo: Ariana’s vocals here are great as (almost) always, and the production is nice enough as well; the only thing really holding me back from giving a better score is Mac’s verse, which I always thought sounded out of place. (7.7)jamesflame: Ariana is another great vocalist with tremendous talent. I can't say I particularly love this song. Again, vocally it's great, but it also just tries too hard to sound like Mariah Carey imo. All things considered, this song isn't too bad. (6.3)Geometrical: One of the most underappreciated Ariana Grande songs out there. It’s both cute and elegant at the same time. Vocals absolutely on point, where Ariana’s range is especially showcased in that final chorus. I like Mac Miller quite a bit, but I’m not sure his brief apparition was necessary on the track, however. (7.6)Overall Score: 30.3though you two sent pretty good songs, you played it a little too safe and ended up falling to the back of the pack. however, you're still in the race, though you won't be getting a bonus next roundand sadly the first team we are saying goodbye to is...16. The Trouble Squad (Adrian C. 🍓 & Mayman )Overall Score: 68.6 | Detour Rank: #15 | Roadblock Rank: #16Detour Results:(Crowded Space)Judge's Thoughts:Nick: this one takes me back haha. there was a time where I absolutely loved this song, and while that is no longer the case I still think it’s a really solid pop track! it does veer a little too much into the generic side at points, but overall I definitely dig this one! (7.6)Samo: A great little song that I wish had been bigger in the US, especially since it’s the best song featuring FGL I’ve heard by far. The drop doesn’t quite feel like it fits with the rest of the song for some reason, but it doesn’t stop the song from being great. (8.9)Juan Carlos: I'm not going to deny that this is really catchy, but "Let Me Go" doesn't feel like a real collaboration because Hailee Steifeld is the one who takes control in the song and Florida George Line seems to be added at the last minute to target a specific streaming demography, being totally avoided here. The build-up is great, but the drop isn't, so I guess Alesso could have done something different there instead. (6.9)Hamed: I honestly forgot this song has 4 artists credited lol. This is a pretty simple generic song that is faceless for everyone involved. It's not bad, its catchy, but it isn't anything truly special for having 4 artists credited. (6.8)fearlessarrow: Is this pop fluff? Yes. But does that mean I don’t like it? No, in fact I LOVE this one. It’s my favorite Hailee Steinfeld song - she has more solid songs than you’d think; for me she falls into the category of having bops but not really having a distinguishable musical identity. Anyways, this is about the song. This song is just super catchy throughout. (8.8)Overall Score: 39Roadblock Results:(Sent by Adrian)Judge's Thoughts:Nick: this one’s fun. I don’t think it’s the best thing I’ve heard from Beyoncé, but I enjoy it enough. the chorus is fun, and there’s some pretty solid lines thrown in there. it’s not exactly I revisit too often, but I still enjoy it for what it is (7.5)Samo: While this isn’t one of my favourite Beyoncé songs by any means, I’ve always liked it a lot. Even if the concept isn’t particularly unique for Bey, Irreplaceable manages to be memorable with it’s quotable lines and iconic intro. (8.8)jamesflame: Lots of great vocalists in this. I will say that this is far from my favorite Beyonce song, but it's still great nonetheless. Bey has an incredible voice and her delivery throughout the song really get the point across. Solid. (7.5)Geometrical: Eh. I appreciate the solid vocal performance, but I never saw anything special or innovative this song has brought forward, whether I’m putting myself in the context of 2006 or 2020. It’s okay. But it’s just Beyoncé doing her usual shtick over a contemporary R&B beat while singing about a vindictive breakup. (5.8)Overall Score: 29.6unfortunately, you two played it too safe in both categories, and the judges ended up being underwhelmed by your picks, so you sadly have been eliminated. thanks for playing!and coming in last place...17. Nicki Minaj's Anacondas (gabe & @pjscott11 )Overall Score: 61.4 | Detour Rank: #17 | Roadblock Rank: #15Detour Results:(Crowded Space)Judge's Thoughts:Nick: I think there was a point in time where I liked this song. that was probably mostly due to the chorus, where Bebe Rexha does a surprisingly good job haha. I’m far from a Bebe fan, but I really dig the way she sounds there! but damn the rest of the song is just so irritating! Nicki doesn’t do a bad job necessarily, but she’s clearly not putting her full effort in, and coupled with that annoying as hell production, this isn’t exactly something I enjoy! (4.1)Samo: I do like this song, but it feels like a weak choice among such a good group of songs. Nicki’s third verse is really good, but the instrumental also takes a turn for the worse. It’s a decent song overall, but each chorus sounds like it’s going to build up to something more impressive than the sample or another verse, which doesn’t help. (6.2)Juan Carlos: This is fun, but that's it? I'm not too impressed but the latest stuff of David Guetta, although this seems to be more from Afrojack than him honestly. Either way, the verses of Nicki Minaj are good and I think that Bebe Rexha really kills the hook, which is the best (and only) part of the song. (6.5)Hamed: I remember when this came out Bebe wasn't originally credited lol. Anyways I loved this a lot back when it came out and was huge. I still enjoy it now though nowhere as much as I used to. Bebe delivers a catchy hook, Nicki's verses are good, and the production is catchy. (8.0)fearlessarrow: So I liked this back in the day but it hasn’t aged the best for me. I’ll still listen if it comes on the radio or something, but I think this song doesn’t provide enough for me to come back to it. I don’t particularly find the chorus catchy either - the one part that I do really like is Nicki’s bridge - it switches up the pace of the song and I like the way her verse flows there. (6.8)Overall Score: 31.6Roadblock Results:(Sent by gabe)Judge's Thoughts:Nick: this one’s decent enough I suppose. it’s so incredibly early 2010s that it’s kinda hard to like even give a critique of it now haha. overall, I’d say it’s kinda fun, but it’s also not something I ever really seek out, and is overall kinda bland. (6.8)
Samo: I do love all three Britney songs here, but this is probably my least favourite of them, and the least interesting, being a pretty generic early 2010s club jam elevated by the catchy melodies and propulsive chorus. It’s also probably the most danceable song here, helping it to stand out. (9.1)
jamesflame: Honestly, I shouldn't like this song. It has so many aspects that I tend to dislike, such as that choppy chorus, yet for some reason I genuinely enjoy this song. It's just so fun. It's a nice energy boost that just makes you want to get up and dance. (7.2)
Geometrical: Decent. Fits really well in the early 2010s dance-pop craze. I could’ve heard Ke$ha sing this just as well as Britney. The final chorus is especially uplifting and easily the best part of the song. Too bad it only lasts only 20 seconds or so. (6.7)
Overall Score: 29.8
sadly, your picks here failed to impress the judges, and unfortunately you have been eliminated. thanks for playing!
