I can't believe "Keep Ya Head Up" got out so early! That is the proper way to sample "O-o-h Child". And yeah, I'm not sure how an Aaliyah song managed to be eliminated so soon, too... At least the superior song of hers is sticking around. The best Mariah song in this year-end is the one that's out. Classic Pulse. ![::)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/eyesroll.png) Today's set was a lot nicer than yesterday's. My bottom 30 seems to have finally cleared out, at least. And I believe my top 8 is still in.

There's a few pleasant surprises remaining. I wouldn't have guess Erasure, for one, would make the top 50, let alone the top 30.

The biggest problem facing the Mariah version of "Without You" is that it's not the Nilsson version. I couldn't rank it lower than I did, though, because it would feel dishonest to me to suggest that it's poorly performed. It's not. It's just not the version of the song that I fell in love with.
"The Power of Love" is one of the few Celine ballads that doesn't either bore me to tears or make me want to rip my hair out, so there's that.
"Here Comes the Hotstepper" lasted longer than I thought it would, and. compared to yesterday, it's a hit I'm willing to take.

Half of the songs left are in my top 30, and almost four fifths of them are in my top 50. I can live with that. ![8-)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/cool.png)
I still have three left in my bottom 12, though. HINT #1: One of those three is a song that was ground to paste in 1994, and has continued to be ground to paste in the '90s retro realm today. HINT #2: The other two are songs that I consider to be relative disappointments by female stars who have many other songs that I like much better. In fact, they each have a song in my top 12 for this rankdown.
Speaking of female superstars, I think some of you will be surprised at which one has two songs in my top three, including my #1! (You'll probably find out my #1 somewhere in the 20s here.)

40. Come To My Window (43): This made my personal top 20. Strong, raw vocals and good melody and instrumental, although could've been a tidy harder. 39. Without You (14): This was her first big hit back home. It also reached the top of my personal chart. I really liked the original and I found this a well done cover that respected the original and brought a new life to it. And she did a pretty good job vocally without oversinging. One of my favorite Mariah covers, and probably her most popular song in South America -at least in the 90s. This made sense because WY must be one of the most popular songs covered -successfully- by multiple artists. Back home, we not only heard Badfinger's and Nilsson's versions. In the 80s Air Supply and Paloma San Basilio scored hits with their covers... and in 1992 Alejandro Cartagena had his breakout salsa hit with a cover of this song, too. 38. I'm The Only One (29): I really liked the more classic rock sound to this and her even stronger vocals. This made my personal top 10. 37. The Power Of Love (7): I was a fan of the original by Jennifer Rush, as she really delivered vocally and emotionally. Laura was far too screamy and I couldn't really stand it. Celine did a great job here, especially in the first half when her voice sounds crisp, beautiful, tender, and powerful. This song was Celine's first hit back home. And again, another case of a song that was already popular in the 80s thanks especially to the Air Supply version and to the Spanish cover by Angela Carrasco, which was a big hit in Latin radio stations 36. Here Comes The Hotstepper (35): I really liked this tune. Their sampling of the Land of 1,000 Dances worked very well with this vibe. It made the top 3 of my personal chart. 35. You Mean The World To Me (37): Another personal top 3. Very nice vocals (that lower register!) and melody. 34. Shoop (86): I remember liking this a bit more in 1994 ![:-/](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/undecided.png) I mean, it's groovy and all, but I found the melody not as strong as I remembered... 33. Cantaloop (22): This was such a unique, different, but exciting song! I LOVED the instrumental and the beat. Lush, sexy, groovy. And the vocals worked, too. A personal top 5 that I think deserved a higher spot in this RD. 32. Again (68): Yup. I ranked it even lower than in 1993. I'm not a big fan of Janet's ballads overall, I don't think she emotes that well to be honest, and I've always found this far too plain. I guess this is how some people feel about Bryan Adams' stuff? ![:-/](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/undecided.png) 31. Mr. Vain (5): This is one of the classics of the "techno" invasion that happened in Peru in the early 90s. A HUGE hit of the decade. It took me some time to warm up to it, but it eventually did. It first barely made the top 10 at a time when it got popular in one of our pop stations. But the more popular it got and other stations played it more often, I gave it another chance and I loved it. High energy, strong female vocals, catchy rap, strong instrumental. It re-entered my personal chart and reached the top, becoming one of the songs with most longevity in the decade. To me, the definitive version is the extended one, though.

#40. Come To My Window - Melissa EtheridgeI don't do much with Melissa's songs on mainstream Rock rds, because I think her Country rock vibe fits better for pop. For instance I remember liking this song on VH-1 , but not too much on MTV. #39. Without You - Mariah CareyA Great slot for this song. I always liked the melody her vocals follow. I never put the Badfinger/Mariah Carey equation together. She really fooled me into thinking it was her own creation. #38. I'm The Only One - Melissa EtheridgeSee what I mean? You never see me rank a Melissa Ethridge song this high on a Rock rankdown. This one has "Black Velvet" vibes. #37. The Power Of Love - Celine DionOh oh I think all the songs from this year In pop I remember are gonna start to tumble? I enjoyed this one. Had a nice new world Enya vibe in the background. Especially in the intro and first verse. After that it goes it own route, but it's still ultra pleasant. #36. Here Comes The Hotstepper - Ini KamozeI didn't recall this one. It sounded cheesy as hell, and It had those tropical Reggae vocals I care not for, but the cool bass kept me from tanking it too low. #35. You Mean The World To Me - Toni BraxtonThe song was pleasant enough, but I'm not a big fan of the ladies singing in low vocals. #34. Shoop - Salt-N-Pepaeh.... its kinda just there. For some reason the vibe has "Humpty Dance" written all over it, and we all know what I think of that wonderjam? #33. Cantaloop (Flip Fantasia) - Us3I didn't know what to make of this? I couldn't rank it any lower, but I really wasn't digging the vocal delivery at all. #32. Again - Janet JacksonThis one hasn't aged too well with me, but I really used to like it back in the day. That other b-side we ranked should have trampled this one. Just my thought. #31. Mr. Vain - Culture BeatThis Italo Techno dance genre was o.k.. I love the fast BPm's of the synths, but the reason I could never like this more than Hi-NRG or Eurobeat is because of those muffled percussion sounds and stripped Synths. Also the lyrical structure left a lot to be desired. It was basically just a chorus and some rapping, but the synths were still very Hi-NRG and that's why I could give it a pretty high ranking. The background beats to this are "pump Up The Jam" style, but it didn't really bother me too much because her vocals are pretty powerful. This style gets a lot better when La Bouche and Real Mcoy hit the scene. Top 30. Nice to see some of the upbeat rap jams I upgraded make the cut. maybe its because i didn't tank them too?

Lots of greats here! I love the remix to Anytime Anyplace. I think other than You Want This, it's my favourite single from that album. But I'm biased in favour of anything from summer/fall 94. Same with both Without You and Anytime You Need A Friend from Mariah - both my favourites.
The Enigma song was track 1 on the first CD I ever owned - Dance Mix 94 from Muchmusic. Only it's not really a dance song? At least in the traditional sense. In any case, I kind of walked into the charts with Return To Innocence already present so I didn't see anything odd with it until years later when it hit me - what a strange song to do as well as it did on the pop chart? I love it tho!
Always by Erasure is another love of mine!
