Extremely disappointed to hear this. "Hold On" isn't a bad song by any means, but it's two years old at this point. I hope they aren't planning a single release with this. If Mickey's debut album is actually coming out this summer, some new music would have been nice. Yes, this seems....... frustrating? Ugh.

She should've debuted a brand new song and they should've made sure it was something that was a surefire hit. This choice is all sorts of confusing. What a waste of such a big platform to truly launch her. I'm sure she'll still get a lot of press from the show with her co-hosting and I know she'll nail the performance nonetheless, but her rollout continues to be so confusing. She's had so much hype and yet so little effort has been put into actually getting her a hit, which is strange to me.

Unfortunately I get the sense that Mickey and her team have basically decided that country radio isn’t in play anymore. I read an interview where Mickey herself said that she knows she is never going to receive any significant airplay.
But...I wish they would be more optimistic because I think with her increased profile she could really breakthrough at Country radio with the right song. However these outdated ballads like “Hold On” and “Heaven Down Here” aren’t going to do it.

Yeah I wish she had a great new song ready to go. Or at the very least, finally send out “What Are You Gonna Tell Her”. The songs they are trying aren’t helping her case at all.

I’m genuinely disappointed that Mickey is doing Hold On. What could’ve possessed her and her team/label to think this deserved a performance? While it’s a good song, it’s 2 years old and for a movie soundtrack...
Why not just push a completely new single if they plan release the album this summer...? Or even perform Black Like Me since that is currently being played on R&B and AC radio formats?

What a disappointment, both that they chose this old-ass song when they should've used the opportunity to launch a new single and try once again, and also to hear that they've given up on country radio. But she clearly doesn't need them, they clearly need her!!! With her increased-by-the-day presence in the general public, I think she could still carve out a Kacey Musgraves kind of trajectory though and her co-hosting should certainly help that along.

Nothing against Kacey but Mickey Guyton has a better singing voice IMO. I Hope Mickey becomes a big star.

I honestly wonder if Mickey Guyton will have even a Kacey Musgraves trajectory because when she performed "Black Like Me" at the Grammys last month, while it did spark some interest in the song and Mickey Guyton herself, the song quickly fell right back off the iTunes chart within the week, I mean heck "Black Like Me" couldn't even chart on the Hot Country Songs chart with the Grammy bump.
I don't know I feel like I keep on waiting for the Mickey Guyton award performance that goes viral like Chris Stapleton all those years ago and it seems like it's just not happening. I do think Mickey Guyton has a small niche audience but I do wonder how much more is it gonna expand.
Oh and the decision for "Hold On" to perform is stupid.

Keep in mind Kacey Musgraves got some awards at the Grammys stage. She has way more presence because of that.
Hold On being performed may mean that song is on her debut album.

I don't think Mickey Guyton will ever get quite as big as Kacey Musgraves because she isn't a songwriter who can craft her own brilliant material in spite of country radio paying her dust, since labels usually don't hand over the best material to artists for whom they have low expectations. TBH, I think it's smart that she doesn't expect anything out of radio and focuses on forging a path separate from them. It'll save her a lot of pain and wasted effort in the long-term. Women are only barely starting to get airplay again there, and I personally don't expect that to be permanent. Radio's just trying to shake off the criticism for a little while before they eventually revert back to form, jmo.

I don't think anyone can claim Mickey isn't a songwriter capable of crafting her own brilliant material after hearing either of those.

I bought Bridges because of "WAYGTH," so yeah... I think those are great individual songs, but listening to everything she's made, not all her tracks are at that same level. Her vocals do lift the more basic stuff.

Not sure how or why Kacey Musgraves is being sampled as a comparison here. Doesn’t fit.
Artists shine best and brightest when they tell genuinely great narratives, whether those be their own or a crafted story. In Mickey Guyton’s case, for me, her strongest songs are easily “Black Like Me,” ‘Tell Her,’ and ‘Left Me.’ I’d take those any day over a “Salt” or “Heaven Down Here.” I’m excited for her upcoming debut record, as hopefully it’ll really demonstrate her excellent songwriting. I just want her and her team to continue pushing those stronger-suited songs on major TV platforms. Her Grammys performance was a *moment* on that show.

Because both are female singers that radio has pretty much shunned for being outspoken and both have kind of carved out their own paths so far. That's where the comparison comes from at least for me.

Another nice profile that mentions her debut album coming this Summer. I hope this means we’re getting to hear a taste of the new music soon.

I don’t understand. They say people don’t like to be criticized for being black, but you release a song about it.

I don’t understand. They say people don’t like to be criticized for being black, but you release a song about it. ...don’t even know where to begin with this. Nobody wants to be “criticized” (a better term would be “looked down on” but that’s a VERY generous term and not much better in the end) for being Black, just as nobody would want to be looked down on for being gay. That’s discrimination and prejudice and has literally nothing to do with releasing a song that describes just how hard it is to be Black in America, a struggle that I (and you I assume) will never fully relate to because we’re not Black. Or would you rather Mickey not sing about her lived experiences? I thought that was the heart and soul of country music: pouring one’s heart and soul out into a song and telling stories about people’s lives.

Yeah... I would think it was pretty obvious why people were comparing them. I like them both. Yes, I see Guyton as a better singer and Musgraves as a better songwriter, and that's the main reason I don't see them having the same career trajectory aside from both happening apart from country radio. Most of Musgraves' albums are stellar straight through, which is how she built up to winning Album of the Year all-genre. I could see Guyton winning lots of Best Song / Record awards attention, not so much Best Album. If you want to read that as some kind of diss, feel free, I guess?

Being Black is exhausting even on a music forum. Anyway, stellar performance as expected.

^ Love that she keeps winning like this. Though my first thought seeing this is oh wow, yet another high-profile platform that her team will probably not take proper advantage of by releasing and/or promoting new material. Like the nominations, good press, performances, etc. keep rolling in for... can we get some new music? Jesus Christ.

She's performing on the finale of the current season of American Idol now, too: Knowing her team, she'll probably be dusting off her cover of "Do You Want to Build a Snowman?"

I just hope they send a new single to radio or new music in general as I am tired of them waiting around doing nothing with any momentum she builds and just let's it go away. (Also wouldn't mind a new single thread since I can't remember the last time "Heaven Down Here" was talked about.
