50 million album SPS is insane. I wonder what the legends (Whitney, Celine, Mariah, Madonna etc) totals would be if recalibrated. Taylor would probably compare quite favorably. Top 5 placements in BB200 Year End charts. Whitney Houston #1 - 1986 - Whitney Houston #1 - 1993 - The Bodyguard Mariah Carey #1 - 1991 - Mariah Carey #2 - 1994 - Music Box #2 - 1996 - Daydream #4 - 2005 - The Emancipation of Mimi Madonna #3 - 1985 - Like A Virgin Celine Dion #2 - 1998 - Let's Talk About Love #3 - 1996 - Falling Into You #3 - 1997 - Falling Into You (#1 - 1998 - Titanic soundtrack) Taylor Swift #1 - 2009 - Fearless #1 - 2015 - 1989 #1 - 2018 - reputation #2 - 2011 - Speak Now #2 - 2012 - Red #3 - 2014 - 1989 #4 - 2012 - Red #4 - 2019 - Lover #5 - 2008 - Taylor Swift Top 5 - 2020 - Folklore

Another thing, her saying she was not granted permission to perform her songs at the AMA's was a lie. If she stated she could not perform those older songs without them receiving royalties, then it would have been the truth. if I recall correctly, the way she phrased it was a bit off because technically, she can perform live any song she wants, but in reality, for the AMAs and Taylor to be able to post it online for the international fans, she needed them to be on board. I think it was due to the masters re-recording clause in her Big Machine contract. She wasn't allowed to re-record her songs without their permission until late 2020. The live performance would technically have to be recorded, not only to be uploaded to Youtube, but also to be re-broadcast in different time zones. Not being able to re-broadcast the performance alongside the rest of the show was probably a deal breaker for the AMAs.

Mariah, for example, has 66.5m certified from RIAA and she has several titles that are either up for re-certification or close to. I know RIAA units and SPS are not the exact same, but that's still a big gap. However, Taylor moved almost 3.8m SPS last year (per Nielsen year-end report) and is on track for roughly the same this year. If she can keep up that kind of activity, she could challenge them eventually.

Ex give "1989" a 2x multiplier due to SPS being at its low point in 2014-2015 and give 1990s albums a 0.7x multiplier due to sales being at their high point then.

^ I see, in that case Taylor will sail past all of them if she hasn't already. I'm pretty confident she will end up being the #1 female albums artist of all time in the US. She just broke the record for most weeks at #1, her albums have incredible longevity, and she shows no signs of slowing down. She has dominated the album charts more than any of the others.

Would have liked to see exile competing for the SOTY/ROTY categories but they waited too long. Hoping for a ton of noms.

Hoping for a ton of noms. the only reason "exile" could have made sense in general field is because the Academy loves Bon Iver. beyond that, I'm glad they went with the single everyone knows for those categories. and unlike the music video field, where they submitted two songs, general field is too competitive for them to try to submit both of them, which would most likely end up with no nominations for folklore songs.

"exile" is boring until the bridge, and I usually don't have the patience to sit through its 5 whole minutes. neither will the general public, so I am doubtful it would add momentum to an album that's already mostly fading (on the singles front I mean). again, perhaps I'll have to quote myself later when it smashes, but I just don't see it. the way I see it, "exile" is to folklore as "ghostin" is to thank u, next.

I think I'm in agreement with kimberly in regards to the Grammy's- It never made sense to submit exile to anything but Pop Duo/Group. Now, if it had have been released to Pop/Hot AC/AC instead of just AAA then I would say probably yes, submit it over cardigan, the Bon Iver attachment would complement the submission.

That’s what I meant - they should have released exile to Pop/AC a month ago. Would have given exile time to grow and really resonate with voters, and hopefully enough momentum to be shortlisted.

I ordered it the week it came out and remember it saying it will ship in 12 to 14 (or 16 I don't remember) weeks, and thinking "oh it'll be here by thanksgiving, then." I'd expect them to have them in the stores after they ship the copies to d2c buyers first, but who knows!

Yes, Love Story was doing like 550k a month or two ago. It will still take a while before Blank Space overtakes it but it will surely happen.

I don't think it'll ever drop back to those levels tbh.

Bon Iver is such an interesting collaboration for her. It’s a rare thing when a song can simultaneously be acclaimed by so many demographics and generations.

I'm doing an analysis of Taylor's discography where I look at words that are unique to specific songs. Words that are used in that song, but not in any other song in her discography. You can thing of these as signature or identifier words... it could be a fun idea for a game "what Taylor song uses this word: ".
Also, the words really do have to be unique, so different tenses of a verb are counted as the same word, and words that contain common suffixes or prefixes are treated as if they're the same word as the root. So unloved, love, lovingly, loveless, lovers, loveliness, loveable, etc would all be considered as the same word.
To start out, I looked at Taylor Swift (Self-Titled), this is how many unique words each song has
6 - Our Song (amen, napkin, pen, steering, tapping, trampled) 5 - Picture To Burn (concerned, fantasy, health, pickup, redneck) 4 - Tim McGraw (Chevy, Georgia, Tim McGraw, thankin') 3 - I'm Only Me When I'm With You (crickets, Friday, yard) 3 - Stay Beautiful (Cory, highlight, jungle) 2 - Teardrops On My Guitar (Drew, teardrops) 2 - Mary's Song (eighty, goodnight) 2 - A Place In This World (mission, tomorrow) 1 - Cold As You (condescending) 1 - Tied Together With A Smile (extra) 0 - Should've Said No 0 - The Outside 0 - Invisible 0 - A Perfectly Good Heart
Average: 2.1 words
