Man, I’ll be annoyed if this song just stalls and then drops like a rock. It doesn’t have to climb much higher but I hope it can get a little longevity. (But really hoping it starts making big gains again)

I don't think it's anything other than this is not meant to be a mainstream pop single, it's just from her latest project which was left of center. Also, idk if anyone wants to hear her sad about an old cardigan. Great song but, not radio material I disagree. Given the performance on other metrics, this should be doing very well on pop radio. It may not be typical pop radio fodder, but let’s be honest, they are not sending her songs like that to the top anymore either. I really feel like this song is a sweet spot for her in terms of sound - impactful and far from offensive . Also, I’m not sure you get what the song is about. I’d give it another spin or two with the lyrics in front of you...unless you were joking in which case that went right over my head. :) |

Did people really expect this song to go top 10/top 5 or be a big radio single? I mean Taylor's singles are notorious these days for posting huge gains momentarily and collapsing soon after, with many ending their run with what most considered disappointing peaks and/or disappointing longevity. I mean she only had 2 songs ("Delicate" and "I Don't Wanna Live Forever") in the last 4 years with what most would consider reputable runs at Chr/Pop. Even "Look What You Made Me Do" being a number 1 was overshadowed by its record-breaking plummet and "You Need To Calm Down" peaking at #9 and "Me" peaking at #6 didn't seem to appease people due to the lack of longevity. What we have seen is more or less a series of disappointing performances in terms of pop radio as of late and this folk song wasn't going to be the one to change that (critical acclaim doesn't equate radio success). I am genuinely curious and just trying to get a general gage of expectation here.

It's literally not even that it doesn't sound like pop. Lewis Capaldi doesn't either. ROCKSTAR isn't pop either. I'm convinced it's because it's Taylor. The exact same thing happened to Gaga with "Shallow" and "Rain on Me," both of which went #1 on the Hot 100 but radio refused to spam them like they do with "Adore You" right now, and Taylor with "Lover". I'm tired of pop radio. They can play "Blinding Lights" "Adore You" and "Circles" until the end of time and fuck off

It's not really that it's not pop and more that it doesn't have a well-defined in-your-face classic pop hook, which is something "ROCKSTAR" and "Before You Go" both have. Everything about this song (and album) is subtle. Pop music and mainstream hits don't particularly lend themselves well to subtlety. This has already done amazing for the type of song it is.

Pop is not keeping up with or responding to the streaming market well IMO. I honestly think SiriusXM is doing better than anyone oddly enough, on multiple formats. |

The song has done better than anyone expected at the moment and I don't think anybody was thinking this was gonna smash like "Shake It Off" did in 2014. For a type of song this is, A Ballad released mid-summer, Taylor's song "Cardigan" has done really well on the charts and has went above expectations.Also this fact not many people know about all the new releases at the moment due to the pandemic and election taking over all the news, out of everyone I know,I'm the only one who knows about this song and other new releases this year, they don't know that Lady Gaga or Taylor Swift even put out a new album this year.

Let's not rule this one out yet.
These types of songs are usually slow climbers for her. "Lover" (song) was the exception, not the rule.
I just hope she tries to push the song a little more on radio and streaming before moving on to "exile" (both the song and her life). But I believe she is letting the music speak for itself this time around and doesn't want to be massively overexposed.
