For a song that doesn't scream commercial, it is doing extremely well globally! The first time I heard it I even questioned if it would fare well.... so happy to be proven wrong. Both cardigan and folklore are killing it!

At first this song seemed like one of the weaker songs to choose as the first single, but after repeat listens it sticks. Amazing song. Amazing video.

This song is just gorgeous. It’s like a warm sad hug.
Is anyone else a fan of Sarah McLachlan? This sounds like it could fit right in with her album Fumbling Towards Ecstasy which is one of my absolute favorite albums of all time.
I’m not overly optimistic this will be a big radio hit, but I hope I’m proven wrong. I’m proud of Taylor for releasing something that doesn’t fit in with the current radio landscape. Hopefully this helps warm pop radio up for more alternative songs.

This is a beautiful song and one of my favorites off Folklore. I've heard it on the radio a few times, and even though it's not as commercial as her usual singles, it really doesn't sound out of place on radio at all. Hope it continues to climb on Pop!

The updates at the bottom for "exile" and "betty" are just bonus ones! Since neither the rock or country forum does daily/weekly updates in thread, I figured I'd just post the weekly updates along with the pop single. Those two forums do have daily Mediabase update threads, so head over there if you would like to check daily updates for those formats! "Cardigan" getting a debut at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles after which many doubted over the past two eras if she would ever get a #1 single again is impressive. It just goes to show that Taylor can outdrove all these Theories and get back to the #1 spot. Taylor's best lead single by far and the Candlelight Acoustic version is also great.

Yess at Taylor getting three top 10 hits, and a number 1. Already doing better than the Lover era. Let’s just hope this era can have good longevity

Queen of records.
Six #1s. Remember when she stalled at #2 several times and then "Mine" "only" reached #3 and we were all concerned? Aw, how naive of us.

Queen of records. Six #1s. Remember when she stalled at #2 several times and then "Mine" "only" reached #3 and we were all concerned? Aw, how naive of us. To be fair, both "Me!" and "YNTCD" both had enough chart points to hit #1 in many chart weeks, but they unfortunately went up against "Old Town Road." True chart followers would have recognized that she clearly still had the power to debut at #1 since those songs earned enough points to do so in many weeks. In particular "Me!" had one of the biggest weeks of the year. Congrats to Taylor on this amazing song "Cardigan"! Even though I don't doubt Taylor's power, I am kind of shocked she was able to get a very non-mainstream sounding piano ballad to #1. This song is truly sublime and stands out amongst all this year's #1s as being different from the crowd. And a special congrats for being the first artist to debut an album and single at #1 in the same week.

I meant "You Belong With Me" and "Today Was a Fairytale", (plus "Love Story" only reaching #4). It seemed like maybe stars were never going to align for her for a bit (especially after "Mine" leaked and only went up to #3).

It seemed like maybe stars were never going to align for her for a bit (especially after "Mine" leaked and only went up to #3). Ooooh right, now as I re-read, what you are saying makes much more sense. It is remarkable it took her 6 years to earn her first number 1 and that she "only" has 6 number 1s to date, but there are so many reasons for that. Besides the fact that country songs almost never hit #1, both LS and YBWM had very long chart runs with peaks at different radio formats at different times. IKYWT could've potentially hit #1 had it been available for streaming. And as mentioned in my previous post "Me!" and "YNTCD" were just unfortunate timing. Luckily she has proven herself to be the ultimate queen of the Billboard 200, so the relative low number of #1 singles doesn't really matter so much, and it's just incredible she's still able to hit the top 14 years into her career with such a non-mainstream song.
