Martina wrote in the liner notes of her Greatest Hits album that, even though this was the most recent hit on the album, she wishes she could redo it. She said something along the lines of how she was holding back on the recording, but felt that they had turned it into a much bigger production in the live setting, and she wishes the studio version was a little "bigger". This is an interesting tidbit because while it hadn't crossed my mind before I believe this might be the reason I tend to hold the song in higher regard compared to other participants. Having seen Martina a handful of times I can say that this was always a highlight of her shows, but in going back to revisit the studio version I can see what Martina means in them holding back. There's a bit of nostalgia wrapped up in "Still Holding On" for me as it's always been a song I like to revisit. I'm not surprised to see castleoblivion26 alongside me as the highest two ranking participants as both of us grew up with country radio during this time. Considering that this barely eked out of the bottom 10 in her first artist rankdown, I'd say this vastly exceeded my expectations.

I'm not surprised to see castleoblivion26 alongside me as the highest two ranking participants as both of us grew up with country radio during this time. castleoblivion26 he's calling you old lmao eh he's right though. This song was out when I first got into Country Music. Prior to that I did know Martina a little because of my Mom being a country music fan and she had Martina's The Way That I Am album on cassette that I played all the time. I also loved "Wild Angels" a lot too. That being said it was during the latter half of summer 1997 that I started listening to country all the time and while I wasn't the biggest fan of this song initially it quickly grew to become a favorite and I love the music, melody, vocal performances, basically everything about this song. Martina and Clint sound great here and I've always wished they had done a second duet because I think it would have been interesting to see what else they could come up with.
That all being said this is my highest loss thus far and I'm not one bit surprised. as Tim said I didn't expect this to do well so it definitely far exceeded expectations.

I know it must be disheartening to see your favorite out so low. "There You Are" is a beautiful song that was always kinda there for me. I was never lucky enough to hear her sing this one live at any of the concerts I've gone to. The live performances from the award shows were amazing and I do love this song. Really I love just about everything on this list so none of my ranks are meant to tank anything. Except for "Marry Me", "Happy Girl", and "It's Beginning to Look A Lot Like Christmas" because those three can just be forgotten imo. Glad two of those are out but hopefully "Happy Girl" leaves us soon, I've never enjoyed that one. Literally the only thing on Evolution I don't like. Also "In My Daughters Eyes" could go soon too. ClevelandRox don't get discouraged when your favorites get eliminated early. Others just don't hear what you are hearing

35. There You Are (47): Simply, I didn't like that melody. Her vocals are pretty good indeed, and that sustained note is great, but not enough to overcome what I see as slightly monotonous melody and production, with a few melodic moves that I didn't find very pleasant tbh.
34. Still Holding On (16): On the other side of the spectrum, here's an example of a solid, classic melody to me. Just like the duet with Jimmy Buffett, I found that vocals work well here. I don't know of Clint Black's music, so I can't compare with his solo songs, I just found that the vocals in this duet worked well, and he provided a great complement to Martina's vocals. By the way, the beginning of the chorus remind me of the beginning of the chorus of "Separate Lives" by Phil Collins & Marilyn Martin. This also means that the song reminded me of strong 80s pop-rock ballads --and I'm a big fan of those.
33. Girls Like Me (38): I really liked this episode of Songland, especially because GLM was my favorite of the candidates. Even my partner who's not a Country fan liked the song :) The final single disappointed me a bit because of the level of autotune in the verses, which I found unnecessary considering how well she sounds in the choruses. That's also the main reason why I ranked it at #38 instead of around #30.

"In My Daughter's Eyes" bows out at #32, as the first top 5 hit to be eliminated from this rankdown!!! This is one of those songs that I would probably like better if it had not been a single. This is definitely one of the songs that helped fuel the "bleeding heart Hallmark card" criticisms that Ten Pound Hammer always used to throw at Martina before he mercifully got himself perma-banned. The lyrics are touching and inspiring, but also targeted at a very narrow group of people. Those who are NOT within that specific group would run the risk of finding it cheesy, as ClevelandRox pointed out. Personally, I don't mind a bit of cheese even though I am not in the song's target demographic. However, in my opinion this is one of those songs that is NOT made to be heard 15 times per day on the radio. I'm still a bit tired of hearing it on the radio all the time, and this is one of those songs that I just never feel like revisiting even though her vocal is really beautiful. Another complaint is I also wish this song was countrier. The arrangement is basically just an orchestra, and tbh I feel like it would have had more lasting power for me if it had a killer mournful-sounding steel guitar and fiddle thrown in there.

Completely agree with this statement because I myself am not in the target demographic for a song like this. That said, I've always had an affection for this song if for no other reason than some of the cheesy lyrics

Just barely missing out on the top 30, we lose our first bite from the Wild Angels album. To this day it confounds me that the second half of this album era flopped so badly!! After "Safe In The Arms Of Love" was a huge top 5 hit, followed up with her first #1 in "Wild Angels", there was NO excuse for "Phones Are Ringin' All Over Town" and "Swingin' Doors" to flop the way that they did. And then "Cry On The Shoulder Of The Road" was even weirder because it didn't quite flop to the same extent, despite being the 5th single following two flops I would put all 3 of those latter songs among her "most underrated singles" if I was pressed to come up with a list. "Swingin' Doors" especially sounds like a 90's uptempo smash hit. This is a style that she largely left behind after this album era, which I think is a shame. There is so much artistic growth on the Wild Angels album, and it would be really cool to hear more music from her in this vein!

"Teenage Daughters" is a really interesting song in Martina's catalog. For one thing, at this point in her career people were constantly clamoring for her to "try something new" (I think unfairly, because the entire Shine era felt so invigorated and fresh for her. How you gonna hear the classic Pat Benatar-style rock vibes of "Ride" and "Wrong Baby Wrong" and then tell her she hasn't been mixing it up?!) So then "Teenage Daughters" comes out, and people are immediately like "We didn't mean THAT different, OMG!!!" The replies of "She sounds drunk", "Why does she sound so rough", etc. still ring fresh in my mind. I remember Martina even had to send out a tweet saying something along the lines of "stop judging the song based on the clip that is circulating, the unfinished version was leaked early" And yet, despite the initial wtf-reaction, this song has had probably a bigger redemption arc than just about any other hit song of the 2010s by any other country artist! Once people heard it more, they seemed to get used to it and come to appreciate what she was going for. The live performances really helped imo, as the personality of the song translates much better to a live setting. I still don't think it was a great lead single choice, as "One Night" would have probably pumped people up for the album more, but it definitely got its job done better than the initial reaction seemed to suggest that it would.

While I never go out of my way to listen to "Teenage Daughters", my ranking for this is a bit higher than it normally would be otherwise if only for the enjoyment of hearing her sing this live on many occasions.
