Leaving us at #29 we have yet another somewhat forgotten top 10 hit with "Life #9". From what I've heard this was pretty much a song that the record label forced Martina to record to try to capitalize on the line dance craze of the early '90s inspired by the likes of Billy Ray Cyrus' "Achy Breaky Heart", Brooks & Dunn's "Boot Scootin' Boogie", etc. It is a style that never really fit her, and although it ended up being a hit, she left it in the past pretty quickly once she started getting more hits. As soon as she had enough material to remove this one from the setlist, it was never heard from again. I'm pretty sure I've even seen live videos from the second half of her career where she tried to sing it on the spot due to a fan request, and couldn't remember all the words 😂 (The same thing has happened with "There You Are" occasionally as well).

"Make Me Believe" was not a single! It earned its place in this rankdown because it WON her album tracks rankdown! Which means, in theory, we have already collectively decided that if any song from her catalog was a missed hit opportunity, this would be the biggest one. I needed another song to get us to an even 50, so I figured this would be a really interesting one to throw in here so we could see how it compares to the big hits for the first time. Unfortunately, it seems to have fallen victim to the fact that literally everything else in the rankdown has the benefit of single bias For this to miss the top half is just plain incorrect. I have no doubt it would have finished in the top 20, maybe even top 15 or top 10, if it had been an actual hit. Anyway, I have said a LOT through the years about why I love this one so much. To see it win her album tracks rankdown was really really satisfying But one of my very favorite aspects of the song the haunting, low background vocal lines that are woven in throughout the song. You know, the "I'm still waiting" stuff. Martina's low vocals have a really dark and rich timbre to them that really add such a cool new dimension to this song, and helps set it apart from the entire rest of her catalog. Honestly, she doesn't get nearly enough credit for her low range. Her going down to an E♭3 in this song is very impressive for somebody who is typically know for their higher range. That is a low enough note that most altos rarely hit it, let alone a higher voice type like Martina with her mezzo!

The loss of "Cheap Whiskey" is noteworthy for a couple of reasons. First of all, it is officially time to say goodbye to Martina's debut album (which many people seemed to think would be happening quite a bit sooner than this!) It is also noteworthy because George Strait Junkie joins ClevelandRox in the (so far) small group of people to lose their #1 :( This song has long been a fan favorite from her first album despite being a flop at radio. It is one of the first glimpses of Martina taking on tough topics, as she turned the music video into a drunk driving PSA, and made the man accidentally kill his wife in a drunk driving accident, rather than just having her leave him as the lyrics of the song suggest. This song also features Pulse Fave Garth Brooks on background vocals!!! Martina was working for him a couple years prior to this, selling t-shirts and merchandise while her husband John did the sound for the tour. Garth noticed what a hard worker she was (it's actually a pretty funny story!), saw her potential, befriended her and John, and told her she could have an opening slot on his next tour if she was able to get a record deal. Which she did, and the rest is history!

Album: The Time Has Come (1992) Tracklist: 1. The Time Has Come 2. That's Me 3. True Blue Fool 4. Losing You Feels Good 5. Walk That Line 6. Cheap Whiskey 7. I Can't Sleep 8. A Woman Knows 9. The Rope 10. When You Are Old Performance in this rankdown:
43. That's Me 36. The Time Has Come 27. Cheap Whiskey Album Tracks: A Woman Knows "A Woman Knows" is the song on her debut album that most closely resembles the artist that Martina would become. The powerful vocals and empowering lyrics are right in her wheelhouse. It was the highest-finishing album track in the album rankdown. When You Are Old
This one is fairly polarizing on Pulse, but it has long been a fan favorite. Gretchen Peters wrote it, which should tell you everything you need to know about its quality! The lyrics reflect on love in the context of growing old, and it is really sweet and emotional, especially with Martina's voice narrating the experience! Losing You Feels Good
Another one that has aged really well alongside Martina's career! The hook to this one is classic country at its best (Loving you has hurt so bad that losing you feels good), and her vocal here is powerful as ever. Definitely a fun one to revisit every once in awhile.
Well, I don't have nearly as much to say about this album as I do her Timeless era. The Time Has Come was her debut album, and tbh a relatively low-impact one. The album only peaked at #49 on the country albums chart, and did not spawn any real "hits". The title track did just barely miss the top 20, but then "That's Me" and "Cheap Whiskey" didn't even scrape their way into the top 40. However, it must have done its job and gotten the right people's attention, because there was a ton of hype for her second era! Although this is one of her more forgotten albums, it is clear from the very beginning that she was going to be a consistent albums artist. This record is cohesive, and has an artistic vision. While the final product isn't a superstar record at first listen the way that something like her next album The Way That I Am is, you can definitely hear the potential!

I happen to think that “Life #9” is a bit of an earworm myself no matter if Martina likes it or not lol. In comparison to the bulk of her material though it does sound rather dated if only because it’s a signature sound of the time. Glad this was still able to make it into the top 30. Looking back I can’t believe that the label didn’t opt to go with “Make Me Believe” as the fourth single to Emotion because it no doubt would’ve been a bigger hit than “It’s My Time” (of which is rather forgettable as I can’t even remember how it goes or hearing it on the radio much). As the winner of her album tracks rankdown, I think it’s great that this was showcased amongst her discography as a whole and I’d have to agree with bboat11 that had this been a single it likely would’ve performed even better here. Other than “The Time Has Come”, I’d have to say that it was “Cheap Whiskey” that had the biggest influence on me as being an introduction to Martina. I was glued to CMT at the time and probably spent the better part of my afternoons watching music videos, so I always remember the video as it’s quite impactful much like the song itself. This is another song of the times though and not one that you’d expect her to continue to perform live once the ‘90s sound modernized. Nothing really to add for “Cry On The Should of the Road” as it isn’t one that I remember hearing a whole lot on the radio given that it was only a top 30 hit. I will say that I think she sounds great on this and appreciate the lyrics as it’s a well written song (which you’d expect from a Matraca Berg co-write).

What do you think could possibly miss the top 20?? I'm fully expecting these four songs to leave before the top 20: God’s Will Valentine Phones Are Ringin’ All Over Town I Just Call You Mine As for the last song to miss the top 20, I think it could be either "Safe In The Arms Of Love" or "I Love You" with both "Reckless" and "Ride" following soon thereafter.

32. In My Daughter's Eyes (18): I've heard this song before -maybe at an AC radio or TV commercials? I like her vocals quite a bit, and the lyrics. I also appreciate the orchestra arrangement.
31. Swingin' Doors (25): A very nice first listen. I like the drums-piano combo, that have a sort of bring a 90s pop rock vibe to me, as well as the chorus melody and the occasional backing vocals supporting Martina's stellar ones. Still, the melody in the verses wasn't as strong for me to rank it higher.
30. Teenage Daughters (15): Huh??!! I'm surprised this is so low. I've heard this before (Idol? Voice?) and I liked it when I did. The melody got stuck too, and hearing it with more detail for this RD made me appreciate it even more. That rock bridge is great! And the overall rocker vibe and attitudinal vocals make this a song that could've made the Modern Rock charts of the 1990s.
29. Life #9 (50): YES! Finally my #50 left :) Sorry but this is the type of country music that is not my cup of tea at all. On top of that, I don't find the main melody appealing, and I much prefer her vocals in later songs. Clear #50 to me.

That's back-to-back losses for the Wild Angels album, with "Phones Are Ringin'" immediately following "Cry on the Shoulder".
"Phones Are Ringin' All Over Town" has got to be one of the most criminally underrated singles of her entire career... The story is soooo masterfully crafted and filled with imagery, the melody is about as engaging as a ballad can get, and of course Martina's vocals really shine. I have always felt like this song brings out the resonance in her voice even more than average, as her voice literally shines with power and energy when she breaks into this chorus.
The fact that this flopped coming immediately after her first #1 hit is absolutely baffling. I mean, I guess #28 isn't a complete flop, but it is certainly low enough to ensure that this became one of her more forgotten singles.

That's a second correct prediction for tim ! "Valentine" has always been one of Martina's more polarizing top 10 hits on Pulse for whatever reason. I get the sense that it is more polarizing on Pulse than it is in the general public. This is a song that had a pretty substantial impact on a larger audience than Martina usually reaches, that a lot of people would probably recognize even if they have no idea who she is. That is undoubtedly due to the fact that the version on Jim Brickman's album reached the top 3 on the A/C charts and the top 50 on the Hot 100, before Martina even released it to country radio as her own single. By the time it peaked in the top 10 on country radio, it had reached a lot of people! Its country success was ultimately eclipsed by stuff like "A Broken Wing", "Whatever You Say", etc. and "A Broken Wing" ultimately went on to appeal to a HUGE multi-genre audience due to its popularity as a live performance song, but I would argue that back when it was released "Valentine" did more to open her up to a multi-genre audience than anything else she had released at that point in her career. It ultimately opened the door for "I Love You" to be the huge all-around smash that is was at the start of the next era.

Placement in the previous rankdown: 22 of 70 Placement in the album rankdown: 2 of 12**There are plenty of higher-quality performances of this song, but this live video is a perfect example of how she always brings it, even in a more intimate setting like a fan club party. The way she "feels" the music with her motions and facial expressions really elevates this song to a whole new level imo, plus the way she adlibs a higher run at the end of the sustained note at the end of the song. I don't remember her doing that in any other live performance, so it was totally just something that felt right in the moment. You can also see a bit of her professionalism in the moment when she enters in the wrong place coming into the final chorus and immediately fixes it.** Total: 530 Average: 25.24 Std Dev: 13.50 (4th largest) Troublemaker - 5 Juanca - 10 taylor - 11 .indulgecountry - 11 toomuchboy - 12 fireflies - 13 austin - 15 bboat11 - 16 CoJoFan - 19 codyj100 - 21 fearlessarrow - 25 schnetzka - 26 kansasmeetsmo - 26 Ginger Spice - 27 Cody Wants Out... - 36 Kanenrá:ke - 37 someguy - 43 castleoblivion26 - 43 George Strait Junkie - 43 ClevelandRox - 45 tim - 46 {Songs Remaining} A Broken Wing Anyway Blessed Concrete Angel God’s Will Happy Girl How Far I Love You I’m Gonna Love You Through It Independence Day Love’s The Only House My Baby Loves Me Reckless Ride Safe In The Arms Of Love This One’s For The Girls Whatever You Say When God-Fearin’ Women Get The Blues Where Would You Be Wild Angels Wrong Again Wrong Baby Wrong Baby Wrong

Make that a 3rd correct prediction in a row for tim !!!! "I Just Call You Mine" is an epic mid-tempo love ballad that seemed to have a loooooong and difficult climb up to #18 on the chart. It was a very frustrating chart run as a fan, especially because I thought this sounded like a hit from the moment I heard it, and I had been so excited to see it get released. Of course it is an unfortunate fact of our existence that the topic of love automatically = cheesy for some people, regardless of the quality of the song itself. This is one love song where I will argue until I am blue in the face that if you think it is cheesy you are 100% wrong. There is nothing recycled or overused in this song! The metaphor "you're a standing ovation after years of waiting for a chance to finally shine" in particular describes love in a way that I have never heard before, and creates a palpable image with real emotional connection. And there are several moments like that in this song. This is also a song where the melody and vocal perfectly work together to enhance the message of the lyrics. For example, the way Martina sings "And here I am; I wanna be your everything" with that suddenly ascending melody and change in chord progression takes a line that might otherwise have seemed a tiny bit cliched and makes it have a real emotional punch. With this reveal, the Shine album is now the final album to see its first loss!!! Congratulations to that album for remaining intact the longest, and in fact being the only album to make it intact into the top half Truly an underrated era that should have had more success.

The title track to Martina's most recent album of new material bows out next, giving tim a perfect 4 for 4 on the songs to miss the top 20! ;) This song has such a killer melody to it. I remember being obsessed with Sarah Buxton's live version that she debuted at some songwriting expo as soon as I caught wind that Martina had recorded it, and I regularly went back to her live performance on YouTube for months before Martina's finally came out. This was also during the brief stint when I had a personal chart. At the end of the year I created a year-end chart based on an inverse points system for each chart week, and "Reckless" was easily the #1 on my year-end chart. Soooooo for me to only rank this at #25 says a lot about how much I love Martina's career 😂 I can't even imagine if I had been old enough to keep a personal chart back in the '90s or '00s! With this reveal, toomuchboy unfortunately joins ClevelandRox and George Strait Junkie in losing his #1. However, austin finally loses his last place. Direct your tomatoes and anthrax envelopes accordingly!

37. Just Around The Corner 22. Reckless Album Tracks: That's The Thing About Love
Everybody Wants To Be Loved

It Ain't Pretty
We'll Pick Up Where We Left Off
Low All Afternoon
Reckless came out in 2016, as her first album of original material since 2011's Eleven. "Reckless" was her first attempt at a single since "Marry Me" flopped four years earlier. In the meantime, she had left Republic Nashville and joined in with Nash Icon, a label directed towards giving legacy acts the freedom to release music with or without radio success....meaning her label had no resources to push her to radio at all. The label was associated with Cumulus stations, so no other stations would touch what their artists released. Still, "Reckless" had a strong start, and managed to climb up to #47 on the airplay chart based exclusively off of the airplay from the handful of stations that touched it! I'm still a little bitter about that I think. Martina's radio days were coming to an end soon anyway, but I wish it hadn't been essentially guaranteed based on affiliation with a label that 90% of the stations wouldn't touch Although I think by the time the Eleven era ended, she was pretty much done with the radio game. They had her touring the country with her face on the side of a TRAIN, meeting radio stations constantly, etc...only for it to end with "I'm Gonna Love You Through It" missing #1 and "Marry Me" not making a dent at all. She has to have been feeling kinda like how Sara Evans describes her life during the Slow Me Down era. Doing tons of work for no reason whatsoever. Anyway, Reckless is a very solid album, and although her voice was noticeably starting to wear down by this point, she still turns in some excellent work on songs like "Everybody Wants To Be Loved", "That's The Thing About Love", etc. I just wish the album was longer, especially since it has had to sustain us now for four years :'(
