I thought Eminem killed MGK's career after "Killshot". he killed MGK's rap career. MGK makes pop-rock now. it's better compared to his past output. still not good though.

"Before You Go" was the direct follow-up single to "Someone You Loved", correct?
That has to be the longest time in history for a direct follow-up single to reach top 10 after the other. SYL literally reached top 10 last year around this time.

I thought Eminem killed MGK's career after "Killshot". Quite the contrary, Eminem gave MGK a bigger platform than he ever had after he responded to MGK's clout chasing diss. When all hip-hop eyes were aimed towards MGK he released one of the trashiest rap projects ever. Colson killed himself, now he is acting in movies and makes rock adjacent music. Em murdered him lyrically.

SYL literally reached top 10 last year around this time. In the US, yeah, it was his 2nd single released to radio, back in January, meaning it took about seven months to climb its way into the top 10. It should be noted "Before You Go" hit #1 in the UK in February, and there was another successful single released between SYL and BYG - "Hold Me While You Wait", possibly my favorite of his.

^The latter is my favorite so far from him. HMWYW was released about 6 months after SYL and 6 months before BYG.

"WAP" is the 13th new number one song of 2020. Since the charts changed to SoundScan/Nielsen data back in 1991 the only years to reach 13 number one songs by late August were 2000 and 2006. It'll be interesting to see if we can crack 20 by the end of the year. That hasn't happened since '91.

The Weeknd's 'Blinding Lights' Breaks Record for Most Weeks at No. 1 on Radio Songs Chart 8/17/2020 by Gary Trust
"I think people have been longing for simpler times and a nostalgic escape," says one radio programmer. The Weeknd's "Blinding Lights" breaks the record for the most weeks spent atop Billboard's all-format Radio Songs airplay chart, logging a 19th frame at No. 1 on the survey dated Aug. 22.
The song eclipses Goo Goo Dolls' "Iris," which led for 18 weeks in 1998 and held the record all to itself for nearly 22 years.
Contributing to its Radio Songs reign, "Blinding Lights," released on XO/Republic Records, adds a 13th week at No. 1 on the Adult Pop Songs airplay chart, the longest command for a lead solo male in the list's nearly 25-year history, surpassing the 12-week dominations of Ed Sheeran's "Shape of You" in 2017 and Daniel Powter's "Bad Day" in 2006.
"Blinding Lights" topped the Pop Songs airplay chart for six weeks and reached No. 2 on Rhythmic Songs. This week, it hits a new high at No. 6 on Adult Contemporary.
The song led the all-genre, airplay-, streaming- and sales-based Billboard Hot 100 for four weeks, this week placing at No. 3. It adds its 26th week in the top 10, becoming one of 23 singles ever to lodge itself in the tier for at least half-a-year. (DaBaby's "Rockstar," featuring Roddy Ricch, also tallies its 26th week in the top 10 on the latest Hot 100.)
The Weeknd's smash also adds a record-padding 22nd week at No. 1 on the multi-metric Hot R&B Songs chart.
What's behind the extended shine of "Blinding Lights"?
Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, "I think people have been longing for simpler times and a nostalgic escape," Will Calder, director of branding and programming for Cox Media Group Pop Songs reporters WPOI Tampa and WPYO Orlando, recently mused to Billboard. "'Blinding Lights' is 2020's answer to [a-ha's 1985 Hot 100 No. 1] 'Take on Me.' It stands out because it's different, but also familiar. And, most importantly, it just makes you feel good."
Along with the song's sound, Republic executive vp of promotion Gary Spangler recently noted, "Every quantifiable metric is through the roof, not just domestically but globally."
Also potentially helping "Blinding Lights," and other established hits, according to industry sources, is that budgets for radio stations' audience research have been challenged amid the coronavirus. Faced with less measurable data, programmers may be opting to stick with what's been working instead of taking chances on newer, more unproven titles.
Beyond The Weeknd's hit on the latest Radio Songs chart, Post Malone's "Circles," at No. 8, spends a record-extending 44th week in the top 10, having ranked in the region continuously since late October 2019.
That many operators are balancing working from home with partial schedules on-site at stations could also be playing into a reliance on the familiar on playlists among more pressing logistical priorities.
Plus, less established acts can't tour or make in-person station visits at the moment, further reducing their avenues toward forging greater inroads and, thus, challenging incumbent stars.
Brian Kelly, vp of operations at Entercom Milwaukee, which includes Pop Songs panelist WXSS, and the company's national top 40 format captain, recently called The Weeknd "one of the biggest core artists of the format." Of "Blinding Lights" he said, "This is one song that we were pulling for and thank goodness it finally came through and is staying for a while."

^ In other words, radio programmers are lazy because gosh at least 10 other popularity metrics are meaningless (YT, Spotify, Apple Music, Pandora, Amazon, iTunes, etc.) C'mon. It's obvious what songs could be potential hits rather than one- or two- blips. There's a difference between waiting 4-5 weeks to determine 'hit' potential and 30 weeks.
That said, as long as Circles is still solid in Top 20 on H100, all the rest is details. LOL

He actually is self aware from the very start, he has a fun personality in his videos and interviews where he also makes fun of his (unexpected) success. I think that's a factor why he accumulated a sizable fanbase.

Still have hope Break My Heart will break into the Top 10. I remember when it seemed like Youngblood would never get into the Top 10 until it finally did at the end of September

I was looking at my predictions since June 2017 (except September-December 2019) and BYG is the first Top 10 hit with less than 10M weekly streams. This week, Before You Go is #10 on the Hot 100 with 8.7M streams (#48 on Streaming Songs). Before this week, Everything I Wanted had the weakest streaming week with 10.1M on April 11 (#9 Hot 100 and #32 on Streaming Songs). I actually wonder if there was any song during the last three years that entered top 10 without being top 50 on Streaming Songs. (I know Adore You was also top 10 whilst being in the 40s in streaming songs, but it still charted in that category though)
