again Cardi and Nicki... I swear, Pulse is sometimes worse than stan twitter. The obsession is so real for someone they dislike. We get it. Just congratulate and not bring someone else up. And the comparisons of debuts are different times like..whew🙄

Laugh Now Cry Later is going #1. It's just a question of when.

Soooo rumor is drake is releasing his album August 28th. That would be circles 53rd week ... According to who? Also, wouldn’t this be the fastest Drake has released a studio album following a lead single, particularly in the same month? If I recall, though I could be wrong, only “IYRTITL” (mixtape) was released without a single and I’m sure “Preach” was sent to Radio/iTunes afterwards? ( thegreatdivine)

At least WAP will block Drake from number 1.

^Probably, unless he has releases another song that is performing better before then. That would be favored to be #1 in that particular scenario.

I believe both songs will have radio backing due to iHeartRadio's tweets. That genre is just getting bigger and bigger.

I'm not certain about this but the incoming BTS and Blackpink releases might be the real breakthrough songs for the K-Pop genre. Take my word with a pinch of salt.

Hasn't K-pop already broken through to the US market? Platinum singles, Top 10 singles, #1 albums... Except radio

It’s kind interesting, because K-Pop growing the rate that it is kind of shows a disconnect between the charts and the general public, sure those two definitely deserve to enter and actually breakthrough to the public, Although definitely not as high as they do, I highly doubt they’ll feel as big as the top songs of the week they are competing against in the gp’s eye

However I don’t think that’s new , it seems the chart is always kinda playing catch-up

Hasn't K-pop already broken through to the US market? Platinum singles, Top 10 singles, #1 albums... Except radio depends on what you call a "breakthrough." the only time a K-pop act has made an appearance on a year-end chart that I can recall is in 2012 and 2013, both with "Gangnam Style." unfortunately the big launches have not translated into hits with longevity, partly because of radio but also the streams and sales for k-pop acts tend to evaporate rapidly after week one. the biggest k-pop group is undoubtedly BTS, and here's their performance: "On", No. 4, 2 weeks on Hot 100 "Boy with Luv", No. 8, 8 weeks on Hot 100 "Fake Love", No. 10, 6 weeks on Hot 100 "IDOL", No. 11, 3 weeks on Hot 100 "MIC Drop", No. 28, 10 weeks on Hot 100 "Black Swan", No. 57, 1 week on Hot 100 "DNA", No. 67, 4 weeks on Hot 100 "Make It Right", No. 76, 2 weeks on Hot 100 "My Time", No. 84, 1 week on Hot 100 "Filter", No. 87, 1 week on Hot 100 "Waste It On Me", No. 89, 1 week on Hot 100 Here's BLACKPINK's: "Sour Candy", No. 33, 2 weeks on Hot 100 "How You Like That", No. 33, 2 weeks on Hot 100 "Kill This Love", No. 41, 4 weeks on Hot 100 "DDU-DU DDU-DU", No. 55, 1 week on Hot 100 "Kiss And Make Up", No. 93, 1 week on Hot 100 If you sum up all 16 songs, their chart run is still shorter than songs like "Circles", "Dark Horse", "Lights" and so on.

KPop has penetrated US for sure but they still feel to me as a niche act as their songs still lack longevity, always front loaded. Sure we can blame radio but the chart is now more powered by streaming and they don't have longevity in that aspect as well after big starts. And no song really has appealed to the general public, it's still mostly the core fan base propelling them. Their YouTube streams are good but for audio only streaming that genre still needs a lot of catching up to do.
Gangnam Style is still the most successful and recognizable by the general public. It's a shame a less memorable Maroon Five song blocked it from getting that #1!

^Yeah. They appear to be the new versions of what the songs by the Glee cast used to be. We'll see when one of them actually has a real breakthrough.

I think the language barrier will always be a hurdle for a KPop song to break out big time. KPop is really consumed a lot visually with their choreography and slick music videos. However, as a standalone song even with catchy beats, if the lyrics are mostly still not in the English language, I doubt it would really be something the American casual listeners/general public will listen to a lot.
Even in movies, very few foreign language films did well in the US box office and after Parasite won the Oscar, you would still see comments online that they won't watch because they hate to read subtitles.
Despite that BTS and Blackpink are still doing good in this market, as good as one can expect for foreign language acts.

It would feel kind of infuriating if that is the case, it would just feel more significant if they achieved a number 1 in their native language. Even if I’m not the biggest fan of them, I felt the same with predominately Spanish speaking acts doing similar things and that it actually worked.

If you ask me, if Spanish language hasn't broken through in the mainstream yet, I highly doubt Korean will. BTS is smart for releasing an English song, but I also wouldn't want them to lose their identity just so they can conform to the white supremacy of US pop radio.

Well their best bet would be in the same vein as the biggest Spanish smashes - collabs with big American artists. Prayers for Selena+Blackpink's song.
Unrelatedly: since 2000, 2019 was the first year we had multiple #1s spend only one week in the top 3. And even then, the first 9 months of the year it was just Shallow. But in the last 12 months with travis kicking off the festivities, we've gotten them October, November, December, May, May again, June, June again, August, August again. October 2019-August 2020: 9 times October 1999-September 2019: 8 times
