Iβm so confused about what makes a song a valid #1. They took away the bundling where artists could sell things that wouldnβt ship anytime soon but still count song sales. Great, considering that βvalidβ #1s have all used this strategy. An artist does in fact have strong streams so far as well as sales and yet their chart placement is still not legit? From what I can tell, even Dynamiteβs vinyls and cassettes are shipping now for first week impact. What makes one song more legitimate than the other? I agree. The only thing I'd add is that there is a difference between general popularity and very intense popularity in a niche. When Cardi went number one last week, the whole US was analyzing and consuming her song. I dont know if you can say that for BTS, but that doesnt mean they aren't intensely popular among their fanbase. I think a good swath of the American public has heard of WAP. I dont know if you can say the same about Dynamite but that doesnt mean it isnt a legitimate number one.

Unless it's utter crap Calvin/Weeknd will definitely go #1... In the UK Calvin always makes it somehow and The Weeknd has super hype coming off of BL
The US is a totally different story and I'm interested in seeing how it'll do It will definitely smash in Canada too I guess

Giant never crossed over so the last Calvin Harris song to hit the Hot 100 was Promises with Sam Smith right?

I don't think even UK remembers R'n'B Man any more. It's a shame such a talented and unique vocalist was wasted trying to make another Take Me to Church. He could've been so much more

For those who play dumb, this is how a valid, legitimate #1 looks like. Spotify 08/22/20 1( =) Cardi B - WAP 2,953,683 ( +53,665) Biggest Gains: WAP If that forced BTS nonsense dethrones a song that is averaging around 3M daily streams on Spotify (even more on Apple Music) in its 3rd tracking week, during a pandemic, Billboard will once again look like a meaningless, irrelevant joke.

Percentage of under 30 is very high. But overall, very few. I've managed to avoid listening to it. Unless you rely on label-boosted streaming playlists or terrestrial radio, it's not hard to filter out music you don't want to hear. YT is obviously easy - turn-off autoplay. A 15-sec preview on iTunes was enough for me; same for The Bones. If I can't last 15 sec, next. I give every big release a chance. And before y'all get all crazy - show me your Country, AAA, Active Rock, Urban AC and Karen AC receipts. I stand by Sugar Walls (Prince) did WAP first and better - it's nothing novel - people just don't know history. 'Universal' #1 pretty much went away 20 years - there's scant exceptions - like 'Single Ladies,' 'Uptown Funk,' 'Party Rock Anthem,' etc. songs that make it on TV shows, sporting events, etc. Let's just accept that the song-promotion is bifurcated: 1-week splash hits v. tracks that are promoted for longevity. Album-bomb tracks don't count because the label isn't actively promoting them - they just land on the chart.

Dynamite will still have an insane amount of sales with 2 more versions dropping tonight and then a whole new MV dropping tomorrow. Hopefully that does them well.
I guess we shall see how radio picks up this week.

According to kworb, it looks like Dynamite got 11 million US YT views in its first day, which would be close to the one-eighth ratio to the worldwide views that continues to appear for their videos.

I read this thread like this: The #1 status of my favorite song is being challenged by a song I don't like, therefore this is the fault of Billboard. How can a song I don't like be more popular than I song I do like. Billboard is a meaningless irrelevant joke. Blah blah blah - LOL Then I guess the good news is that since this thread is about the Billboard chart, the people that think it is a joke can post in a different thread? LOL I know - wishful thinking

Why is it more deserving than BTS?
If BTS gets the streams and sales and happens to dethrone WAP - it is not deserving?
If BTS gets more streams and sales than WAP is it the fault of the "joke formula" that drives the charts? or is it the fault of the people that buy and stream the song?

We all know why WAP is #1 now and why Dynamite will be next week. Totally legit. cliche alert: don't hate the players, hate the game. IMO, I'd rather have a #12 peaking HIT song, than a #1 peaking song..but I can understand why most artists (and fans) want that #1 peak so bad.

If Billboard charts aren't able to accurately portray the most popular song or album for a given week. then that means the methodology is still flawed and open to manipulation and they needs to fix it. It's that simple and it doesn't go any deeper than that. This isn't favorite artist, favorite song thing. If the Hot 100 chart isn't able to reflect reality (in this case, WAP being, by far, the most popular song in America right now), then it's a useless, meaningless, inaccurate chart. And since we're stuck with Billboard, I would like for them to get their shit together.

So are the BtS numbers good enough for #1? (Considering they're likely gonna drop steadily through the week but they will probably sell over 100k).

Iβm not going to engage any further into a discussion with people who are trying to argue that WAP isn't the most popular and dominant song right now. It's like saying God's Plan wasn't the biggest song in January 2018.

Being dominant right now at this very moment or being dominant even this week is a much different thing than being dominant during January 2018
Charts are for 7 days - not a month.
