FASCINATED vs. DOMINO DANCING Which song will take the title? Will Lost Hits newcomers Company B emerge victorious or will the Pet Shop Boys avenge their runner-up performance from the first Lost Hits of the Late 80s rankdown? Both songs spent time in first place with the two batting back and forth during the final 11 movements. Each of these songs had a low standard deviation with one having the 4th lowest and the other the 10th lowest SD. These 2 songs were the only ones in the rankdown to receive 10 top rankings with one song just reaching that mark and the other getting 12. In the end these songs were only separated by 17 points. newpower , Mirago and Geometrical all still have their favorite in the game. Who among them, if anyone, will get to see their #1 win the rankdown? Find out in a few minutes...

The second Lost Hits of the Late 80s rankdown is now complete! Thanks again to everyone who sent in a ranking and participated! It was exciting to watch "Fascinated" and "Domino Dancing" battle down the stretch for the title. I wasn't sure which was going to win and either would've been a great winner but it was nice to see the Pet Shop Boys come out on top especially after "It's a Sin" came so close in the first Late 80s rankdown. As I mentioned earlier in the thread there will be one more series of Lost Hits rankdowns for the 1980s. This final go through will cover songs that haven't been ranked elsewhere and which peaked in the lower portion of the Hot 100. However, this time around we will be starting with the Late 80s and work backwards to the start of the decade. I have already finalized the list for Late 80s part 3 and you can expect that rankdown to open some time after the Lost Hits of the Early 90s rankdown is wrapped up. {FINAL STATS}

So the PSBs avenged their runner-up finish after all. Another great winner. Thanks for hosting, rowellfarm490.

PSB winning isn’t too surprising but Tina below Company B is very odd, nothing against Fascinated, as I’ve always considered it a guilty pleasure...thanks for hosting Rowell!

Ohhh see I would've guessed Domino Dancing as the winner if I didn't have the foreknowledge of Samo hating the Pet Shop Boys. Looks like everyone else loved the song enough to offset him, though. Definitely wish "It's A Sin" took a crown instead, but a win is a win for The Boys 👍

10. One - MetallicaGood metal song. There's no denying that, but I was never gonna put it above any of the hair Metal classic featured here. I prefer early 80's Metallica anyway. This one had some good Guitar and Percussion combos. The only thing is I really can't come back to it that often. A leggless ,and armless torso on a bed begging to be put out of its misery. It's a bit too dark and pretty gruesome if you put the Music video story together with the song. 9. Money's Too Tight (To Mention) - Simply RedThis one was one of my 1986 favorites. Love the way he found money related lyrics to rhyme in the song. Might sound cheesy to some, but to me its just catchy song writing. 8. Me, Myself and I - De La SoulI got nothing to say about this except that it was ridiculously silly, and cheesy. 7. The Best - Tina TurnerI vaguely recalled this Tina Turner song, but I did remember some Rock format stations trying to get away with putting this one on rotation. Not KLOS tho. 6. It Takes Two - Rob Base & D.J. E-Z RockI hated this one back then. Sounded terrible. It might sound melodic to some ,but to me some yelping samples is about as melodic as the sound of a chainsaw. It also sort of resembles that "horse whipping" sound from that House of Pain song. It takes two to produce an annoying travesty like this is all I learned from it. 5. Dreaming - Orchestral Manoeuvres in the DarkOne of my favorite OMD songs that I have praised on various Rds. 4. All the Love in the World - The OutfieldEasy top 20 for me. A really great NRGetic Powerpop vibe , and I'm glad it made the top 10. 3. Paradise - SadeNice sulty sophisticated smooth pop vibe. I didn't recall charting this one too high, but it sure sounded enticing this round. 2. Fascinated - Company BOne of the few times Hi-NRG Freestyle actually made a dent in the Hot 100. I loved everything about this music. The vocals, percussion, DOA claps. Again listen to the extended guys. Does it so much more justice. Especially if you love those big 80's NRG disco intros and breakdowns 1. Domino Dancing - Pet Shop BoysGreat winner. In retrospect both these songs follow similar NRG synth progressions. The flamenco guitars always added a little Latin fair to this jam. rowellfarm490Good Rank down and great list of song. A lot of favorites got slaughtered at the starting gate, but at least I got to see some Hair Metal classics finally make the top 40 on one of these RDs.

20. I Don't Want to Be a Hero (15): Great follow-up to Shattered Dreams. A minor hit in pop radio back home, but it made my personal top 3, as I really liked the melody, energy, production, and vocals. I hadn't heard it in a long time so it was great to listen to it repeatedly again :) 19. I Don't Mind at All (45): I wanted to like this first listen, but it was just too forgettable. The instrumental is nice, but I wanted much more attitude in his vocals. Maybe I needed many more listens... 18. You Be Illin' (46): Another first listen that failed to keep me interested. I didn't find the music that appealing, and the melody is forgettable to me, with that brass that sounds like a parody. Clear bottom 5 for me. 17. Be With You (4): :'( This was a minor hit back home, but one of my favorites from them. It was their 4th personal chart-topper and a song I still like listening to once in a while. I LOVE hearing it in long drives to get pumped up. Short but effective. I love the strong drums sprinkled with strong synths, bass, strings, guitar, and gorgeous harmonies! 16. Coming Around Again (31): I remember this was barely played by one of our pop stations. I was a bit surprised that a song by such a class act didn't do better, but I wasn't too much into this type of AC ballad at that time either. I've grown to like it much more with time, but it's still a bit too slow to me. 15. Candy (39): I had a bit of a hard time to rank this. I like the production/instrumental/vibe quite a bit. I was close to put it in my top 30, but the melody got a bit repetitive and the talk-singing vocals were horrid and gave it a high burnout 14. Going Back to Cali (50): Another first listen that didn't impress me at all. Those synth drums sounded as bad as those of New Kids ballads the brass were the most interesting stuff, but not enough to compensate the plastic drums. I didn't like the melody either, and in this group of strong melodic stuff, this song was a clear bottom of the barrel for me. 13. Love Will Save the Day (19): A personal top 20. I really liked the dance tunes of this album -as opposed to the ballads- and this didn't disappoint. Fun, with a little bit of Latin flavor, with great vocals of course. I like IWDWS and SE more, but this is pretty good nonetheless. 12. Alphabet St. (34): I didn't know Arrested Development's Tennessee sampled this song. I had barely heard this before. The production and instrumental are pretty good, but again the melody wasn't that appealing to me. 11. Mary's Prayer (27): Very nice discovery. Cool sophistipop vibe, strong vocals, but maybe a bit too AC when I was finalizing my ranking. In the past week the chorus has come back to me a few times, so I can admit I under-ranked this one, and I should've put it in my top 20.

10. One (33): I might've heard this at some point before, but I'm not so sure about it. I think I could've ranked this a bit higher with more familiarity. I like the instrumental, but I didn't find the melody too memorable, and 7+ minutes was a bit too much . Good for them to make it to the top 10, though. 9. Money's Too Tight (11): I wish radio stations had played this song in the 80s -we heard the jam Come to my Aid, The Right Thing, and Holding Back The Years. Pretty good disco vibe, with some sophistipop vibe, and MIck's strong vocals. Great to see them in the top 10! 8. Me, Myself and I (43): Well, this is another song I got to like more with repeated listens after sending my list. I should've ranked it around #35. I do like the production, but liked the melody of other songs more immediately 7. The Best (1): I heard this song first a few years later, thanks to its video being played in one of our music TV stations. Since then, it's become one of my top 5 TT songs, and in the past month I've been hearing it more thanks to certain electoral campaign, which has made me like it even more. A great rocker with good instrumental, melody and of course vocals. My top 4 was quite close, and I could've ranked any of them as my #1, 6. It Takes Two (31): I didn't care for it when I first heard it in '89, but I've grown to like it a bit more with time. The main hook is simple but effective, and all those woah/yeps and other sound effects became quite 'influential', which I appreciate. Still, I like the melodies and instrumentals of other songs more than this one. 5. Dreaming (8): A personal chart-topper. Although it's not in my top 5 OMD songs, I still like it quite a bit, and hear it once in a while. Quite a catchy, dreamy instrumental that raises my spirit :) 4. All The World In The World (16): Great showing for Outfields!! Not as strong as Your Love, Since You've Been Gone or For You, but still a strong pop rock tune. 3. Paradise (9): One of my favorite Sade songs, it made my personal top 20, and still sounds great now (the percussions and bass are delicious :) ) 2. Fascinated (18): I had forgotten this song. I've heard it a few times in the 90s, but this wasn't played in our pop stations. The beginning reminds me a bit of Freeez's IOU and the chic's lower register reminds me of Madonna. Pretty strong instrumental and melody, although I like the verses more than the chorus. Despite my relatively low ranking, I'm happy to see this underdog at #2. The songs in my teens were all pretty close anyway. 1. Domino Dancing (3): YESSS!!! I love this song, and as I said, this was practically tied at #1. It was my 4th personal chart-topper from PSB, following West, Sin, What've I, and Always. I found these other 4 songs stronger than DD, but I still LOVE DD --especially the Latin and Spanish influences. PSB is (still) one of my favorite groups ever, so I'm ecstatic to see them at #1. In terms of the extras that I heard in their respective years: - Walking Down Your Street was an underperformed, and barely made my personal top 20. It's my least favorite Bangles single - Come on Let's Go was a hit back home and made my personal top 3. It was a pretty good follow-up to La Bamba, with similar retro fun rock'n roll vibe liked by all generations. - Pamela was Toto's last song to receive moderate airplay. I liked it enough to make it reach my top 25, but it was far from their best material. - You Don't Know received little airplay, but the video did have some good rotation --I hadn't heard this since the 80s, though. Nice to rediscover it! - One was a great comeback from the Bee Gees! It was a minor hit in Peru, and made the top of my personal chart. - I Wanna Be With You was a nice cover by Samantha Fox, but it came just a year and a half after a very strong cover by Luis Miguel that became a big hit in Peru, so SF's tune was a bit redundant. I do like it, though. Thanks, rowellfarm490 for another fun RD!!
