When was the last time a new cover actually gained enough traction and charted multiple weeks on Hot 100? I'm sure the Glee Cast last did it around their 2011/2010 peak, but drawing blank at what would have possibly done so since.

Seems like this song is on its way to having a chart run, whether it'll be a big one, who knows yet.

I'm aware in the past decades there was plenty. However it has become much less common, which is why I asked when is the last time one came along.

Well there have been a few Voice covers that god a few weeks on the charts. There was also that godawful Dancing on My Own cover that was a hit internationally but only spent 2 weeks on the Hot 100. But in terms of a cover being a hit? The closest one that comes to mind was the Disturbed cover of Sound of Silence back in 2016.

off the top of my head I think the last one was Zombie by Bad Wolves in 2018? I may be forgetting something but that one stuck around for a couple months

Rap being dominant has nothing to do with it, considering cover hits/songs have been out of style years ago at this point. 

Most new covers charting the past 15 years has to do with being tied to a one-time performance on a TV show (Glee, American Idol, The Voice, etc). The amount that were released as singles on their own, pushed traditionally and charted is almost non-existent. 

I believe it has more to do with the digital/internet era (2005-present) making older music more easily accessible/discoverable, thus labels just assume people would rather hear/discover the original than gamble with a different artist re-introducing the song. Also sampling/interpolations have obviously been more commonplace.
